Chivalry During The Medieval Ages

There are many misunderstandings with the word chivalry, one of them being that the knight never actually swore an oath of chivalry until later in the middle ages. The word originates from the French word cheval meaning horse, and the French word Knecht meant knight, by putting the two words together, we get the word chevalier which meant horseman. In Geoffrey Chaucer’s poem, The Knight’s Tale, the author encapsulates chivalrous characteristics in his telling of a battle for love. In its fundamental form, chivalry idealizes a knight’s conduct, both on and off the battlefield (Gregory-Abbott). Chaucer employs this “heroic code [of] bravery, loyalty, and service to one's lord” to illustrate the idillic knight throughout the narrative (Rossignol). Chaucer’s poem, The Knight’s Tale, exhibits the ideals of chivalry in the form of two knights, desperately in love with the same woman, and a wise Duke who embodies the voice of reason. Each knight upholds honor through compassion, troths, and heroism on the battlefield, despite their afflictions with each other.

The epic poem Beowulf comments on the unsustainability of chivalry, a social system based off building one’s own honor, strength, and reputation. Similarly, the engraving Knight, Death, and the Devil acts as a visual representation of the inherent flaws of chivalry as a social system. Beowulf, the protagonist of Beowulf, is written as the most powerful man in the world, capable of besting anyone in physical competence—the seeming embodiment of chivalry. This same definition of chivalry is depicted in Durer’s engraving: a lone knight in shining armor. Despite whether or not they were pushed into solitude, the protagonists of these two texts similarly show how chivalry can be undermined when its heroes are solitary figures who do not develop a network of allies. To defend this argument, I will first discuss why the two heroes have been pushed into solitude. Second, I will analyze the warnings given to each protagonist about their respective solitude. Third, I will explore the results following the neglect of the warning, and fourth, I will talk about how each hero’s misguided faith leads to the demise of chivalry. Lastly, I will introduce a counterclaim and analyze its strengths and weaknesses against the thesis.

To become a knight in the Medieval world, it had taken a lot of training.Their training had started when the knight was seven years old. While there training,they would have to spend time with the ladies of the castle. They were called pages.In this time the women's if the castle taught the page how to dance, play songs, and sing.After seven years of being a page, the page becomes a squire. They would practice on how to fight, and learn how to take care of horses. During the Middle Ages, people across the lands thought of knighthood to be a holy calling which the noble knights of the land are bound by. The code of chivalry is the set of standards that controlled the knights’ behavior. When in war, the knights are to be tremendously brave in battle, loyal to his lord, and willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. At home, a knight is to defend the weak and to serve God at all times. A knight is also to be gracious and kind toward noble ladies. In truth, these knights did not always follow these standards. In all of the stories we have read so far, a major theme that has been constantly discussed is Knightly Behavior and the Chivalric Code. In what we have read so far Arthur and his knights have displayed these themes multiple times throughout. The knights were held to a much higher regard than many other people during this time.

A knight’s Code of Chivalry was a system of morals that they lived by. Knights were very respected people because they lived by that code. A person’s morals or personal code can reflect a person’s character. I realized mine throughout the time I spent taking care of my great grandmother.

Seeking companionship, the Knight is by far the most honorable person in the city besides the King. He fights in numerous battles and served his king with the utmost respect. He is the poster child of chivalry, honor, and courage. Along with that, he is the tha face of gentle, truth, freedom, and honor. Everyone in the town looks up to him and respects him.

Being appointed a knight was a very serious affair. These knights were expected to have all the traits of a good man. They had to be courteous to women, loyal to their king, and keep their faith in God. If they failed to honor the code of chivalry, they faced public humiliation

chivalrous isn't necessarily the most popular word around today. Most women use other words such as mature, gentleman, and being a man. It is a man's duty to treat the girl with the utmost respect. Some men still follow the chivalrous guidelines today. Most people may argue and say it is dead , but it's all your opinion an how you was raised and religious beliefs. Chivalry is a nod to differences between the sexes. It is not about either the inferiority the lofty superiority of women . Some women will bear children and some men will step up. Chivalry is used to connect the characteristics of knighthood. What men don't understand is that that women want to be treated well and have all the say so in the realtionships.

The Dark ages also know as the Middle ages were a time when medieval literature started. What is medieval literature? It is a broad subject about all the written works available in Europe. The funny film Monty python recreates the Arthurian stories. This film made fun of the circumstances during Middle Ages told through the story of King Arthur( Morte d’Arthur) and framed by a modern-day murder investigation. All of the knights were sent on a quest to find the Holy Grail facing a bunch of obstacles mentally and physically. The king of the Britons (Arthur) lead his knights through a persistent Black Knight, Three-headed giant, an old man guarding the bridge of death, a shrubbery challenge, the Castle Anthrax (house of the virgins), rude Frenchman and a killer rabbit. Throughout the film and story of Morte d’Arthur we see themes and codes of chivalry being mocked. We see examples of loyalty, bravery, knowledge, modesty, and honesty, which are all expectations of knightly behavior. The knight's loyalty and bravery are constantly being tested on their quest to find the Holy Grail. It is their duty as knights to continue on their journey and to follow the chivalric code, but can they do it?

One of the most important things to be addressed is the definition of a few keywords: chivalry and knight. Chivalry, is defined as the Medieval knightly system with a religious, moral and, social code. Knights had a very strict code to obey known as The Code of Chivalry. A knight is somebody who served someone of a higher power, usually a lord, king, or queen. They were trained from a young age and served in a military capacity, usually on horseback or on foot.
