Into the Wild, written by John Krakauer tells of a young man named Chris McCandless who 1deserted his college degree and all his worldly possessions in favor of a primitive transient life in the wilderness. Krakauer first told the story of Chris in an article in Outside Magazine, but went on to write a thorough book, which encompasses his life in the hopes to explain what caused him to venture off alone into the wild. McCandless’ story soon became a national phenomenon, and had many people questioning why a “young man from a well-to-do East Coast family [would] hitchhike to Alaska” (Krakauer i). Chris comes from an affluent household and has parents that strived to create a desirable life for him and his sister. As Chris grows up, he …show more content…
Once deciding that he would not bring all the required equipment, it took many people scolding him before he even considered letting other people assist him. McCandless set out on the journey alone, and wanted to prove to himself that he could in fact make it alone in the wilderness. This is one of Chris’ critical faults. Too proud to admit defeat, Chris only lets others help him when in dire circumstances, eventually accepting clothes and other supplies from friends. At the end of his life, a very gaunt Chris finds it increasingly difficult to find game and records how butchering is “extremely difficult” (166). If Chris was adequately prepared for his trip, he would have taken th steps to learn these skills, and may not have resorted to the seeds that killed him. Another crucial mistake made by McCandless was not accounting for when he would not be able to get game. He went into the wild with a small bag of rice and the “heaviest item in his half-full backpack was his library” (162). While it is extremely difficult to read the last chapter of the book without feeling compassion and admiration for Chris, his death could have easily been prevented. His complacency towards “the Wild, the savage, frozen-hearted Northland Wild” proved to be his biggest mistake (9). Chris is a charismatic young man, but takes extensive measures to ensure he does not become too close with anyone. By going out into the wild without so much as a letter to his parents,

Chris Mccandless’s motivation was for staying in the woods was for the excitement and rush. Chris is known for many of his specific traits as a person. His stubborn nature or arrogant personality but, one of his very apparent attributes were his self-reliance and his love for nature. He found nature to be an unknown. An unknown that he would turn into a familiar territory. According to Chris, “Tramping is too easy with all of this money. When I was penniless and had to forage around for my next meal.” (Into The Wild 33). Christopher enjoyed the wild because you had to take risks and you always had an adventure every day. Furthermore, McCandless burns his money, donates his life savings to charity, and abandons his car because he is determined to destroy all aspects of his past life. Chris desires to start a new life because he is trying to escape a world filled with materialism and the false security of his parents’ wealth. Similarly, The Newcomer exhibits a strong sense of determination in his adventures as he continues to fight for his life after “[he breaks] through” (71) the ice and begins to freeze to death. Additionally, The Newcomer is determined to build a second fire despite “the snow [falling] without warning upon” (73) the man’s first attempt at building a fire to thaw his feet. Apart from determination, Chris McCandless exhibits bravery throughout his travels as he deliberately places himself in uncomfortable or dangerous circumstances. For example, Chris chooses to overcome his fear of the ocean, in an act of bravery, by plunging into the waves. Additionally, Chris continues to demonstrate bravery and assurance in his self-sustainability as he trudges into the rough Alaskan terrain with little else but a rifle, a journal, a camera, and a large bag of rice. Into The Wild Essay #1 Chris McCandless was, without a doubt, a reckless narcissist who brought pain to his family. There are many examples throughout the book that prove Chris takes unnecessary and avoidable risks that eventually cause his death. There are also many examples showing Chris to have this overwhelming sense of self-importance that causes him to care very little about other people and their feelings, especially his own family. His family has suffered and will continue to suffer a great deal because of Chris’s stubbornness, ignorance, and overall reckless behavior. To put it plainly, Chris McCandless’s death was selfish.
Jon Krakauer says that McCandless depended on advice from the hunters in South Dakota, “who advised him to smoke his meat” (166). This quote tells how McCandless needs to rely on himself and learn how to properly cook and save the meat; he wants to be prepared to be on his own to survive in the wild. It shows how Chris is determined to live up to his journey and be on his own. This was one of the important themes because McCandless went on his journey for isolation and relied on himself throughout his
Chris was never very close to his parents, and frankly didn't like them very much. He would never spend much time with them, or even let them know how he was doing. However he would send them his grades from school. For example, he wouldn't send letters to them like he would to Franz. By being distant from his parents this may tell us that he didn't have a great childhood. This may be the reason he wanted to leave home and go live in Alaska by himself. For these reasons I have concluded that Chris McCandless
