The story that most of us know as “Cinderella” actually has a lot of different versions. These different versions contain several elements that are similar, but yet even more elements that differ from one another. The three main difference between all the different versions of this story are the characters, how others treat the main character, and the setting in which these stories take place. The characters in the story Cinderella differ greatly depending on what version you are reading. To start with, in the Norway version the main character is not named Cinderella, but Katie Woodencloak. In this version Katie’s father was a king who had to go to war with another kingdom. Also, in the Norway version the stepmother was only harsh and mean to Katie when the king was not around, and when he was not around she would be very brutal to her and even beat Katie. As far as the other sister goes, in this version Katie has one stepsister who is very mean and ugly. The final character comparison in the Norway version is the “fairy godmother”. In this version there is no “fairy godmother” like what is typically thought of with the story Cinderella. In this version of the story her father is, in fact, not a widower but he does have to travel for work. Also, in the Italian version of Cinderella there is no evil stepmother like that in the other stories. There are no stepsisters in this story either, Cinderella does have two sisters though who actually are not very mean to her at all. The final character comparison in the Italian version of this story is the “fairy godmother”. In this story the “fairy godmother” is a bird named Verdelio. This bird is the reason that Cinderella is able to get her work done, and how she gets her beautiful
