Classical civilizations (approximately ~1000BCE to 600 CE) These emerging civilizations were much larger than the earlier ones of Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley and Shang China – displaying more complex political, economic, cultural, and military organization. All civilizations traded with others and many conquered new territories. Classical civilizations include those such as Zhou and Han China, the Gupta Empire in India, and the Mediterranean civilizations of Greece and Rome. 6th C BCE: The Lives of Buddha, Confucius, Laozi (The beginnings of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism) 500 BCE - 300 BCE: Greek Golden Age This “golden age” began after the Greek victory over Persia during the Persian War (546 – 479 BCE) and came to a decline after the Peloponnesian War (431 – 404 BCE). During this time period, the Grecian states were well renowned in cultural and political status. Greece excelled in government, philosophy, art, poetry and drama. The Golden Age also marked the creation of democracy in Athens. Theaters promoted famous playwrights, architecture including the Parthenon art and sculptures was created, and famous philosophers including Plato and Socrates significantly impacted the thought processes of that time. 507 BCE – 31 BCE: Establishment of the Roman Republic The Republic was a republican form of government that lasted over five hundred years.
