Colorado Springs Fire

Those who have lived through natural disasters view them differently than those who have not. Experience helps us understand circumstances in a new way. In the essays “Brush Fire” by Linda Thomas, and “The Santa Ana” by Joan Didion, the authors perceive the mysterious Santa Ana winds that blow through California, and the deadly brush fires that it creates. Through the use of imagery, word choice, tone, and description the authors depict the beauty and destruction that they see from the point of view of a native or an outsider.

The Great Fire of 1889 is the reason why Spokane looks the way it does today. Even though this fire took the lives of many people, caused many to lose their jobs, their businesses and their belongings, the Great Fire of 1889 led to the expansion of Spokane Falls Washington.

210 houses and buildings were destroyed (Wikipedia) and from this main fire, another 3 started in Lithgow, Springwood and Mount Victoria.

And it involves interaction with familiar faces, tasks, procedures, and organizations. (Auf der Heide, Erik. 1989) An emergency is generally personal in nature. A disaster is “an event associated with the impact of a natural hazard, which leads to increased mortality, illness and/or injury, and destroys or disrupts livelihoods, affecting the people or an area such that they (and/or outsiders) perceive it as being exceptional and requiring external assistance for recovery” (Cannon 1994, 29, fn.2). Finally, a catastrophe can be viewed as “…any disaster that overwhelms the ability of state, local, and volunteer agencies to adequately provide victims with such life-sustaining mass care services as food, shelter, and medical assistance within the first 12 to 24 hours.” (GAO, Disaster Management, 1993, p. 3).

A natural hazard is a crisis that occurs naturally and brings harm to humans or things they care about.

The economic cost of wildfires is very expensive. All the help from the firefighters is very costly. The firefighters work hours a day for months depending on how big the fire spreads. All the chemicals and aircrafts they spend on trying to put out the fire adds on to the cost. The houses and the rest of the owner's belongings are lost from the fire and are needed to be rebuilt and repurchased. Millions of dollars is spent on the damage of

Imagine being at a dance concert and a fire happens in a split second. That is what happened in Oakland, California. On December 3, 2016 the fire kills at least 9 people and over a dozen injured. The heat from the fire was so intense it felt like your skin was melting. John Evanofski said, “ You could feel the heat of the flames.” All family members and friends waiting outside crying wondering about their loved ones inside. John Evanofski said, “Most of us were crying or unable to react. It was so hot and so terrible knowing that so many of us were still inside." Officials say that the death toll could go up to the dozens. Most of the victims were on the second floor because the fire started on the stairs and they couldn’t escape.

I choose this article because this is happening today. In this article the fire is spreading in San Simeon, California, (in the west area), Washington, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, Palm Springs, and San Francisco. All of these states were on fire either today or few days ago. In San Simeon about 16 homes were burned in the northwest. California’s wildfire destroyed 34 house and 14 other building. Washington, Washington, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, Palm Springs, and San Francisco house, land, and other building were burned down and many people tried to help to stop the wild fire.

The wildfires will have an impact on scarce resources because many buildings and thousands of acres of trees have been burned to the ground. It not only hurts the land category, but it hurts labor and capital categories. Labor includes the physical actions and mental activities that people contribute to the production of goods and services. Capitol includes all factory, storage, transportation, and distribution facilities. The people affected by the disaster will begin to act in self-interest. Self-interest simply means that each economic unit tries to achieve its own particular goal. The wineries will try to rebuild fast in order to have tourists return and begin to make profits. People will try to find a place to live until their homes are rebuilt. Natural disasters can destroy factories and cripple supply chains. This means the market system must develop methods for assessing and managing risk. In most cases, people would have insurance to cover the risk of a natural disaster so it does not have to solely rely on out of pocket money.

Natural disasters can and have affected people and places for as long as we can remember. The physical damage can cost local councils and government millions and in some cases even billions of dollars. Majority of the time the government doesn't provide the state government with enough money. These money problems are bad, but they're not the only damage that places face after being hit with a natural disaster. Physiological damage is just and devastating.
