Communication is a very important feature for groups. It helps members understand each other and explain themselves. Our group was strong in the communication field because we understood each other and gave every individual time to contribute ideas. The metaphor that we used was a brilliant collaboration by all four of us. One member insisted on using a rollercoaster as an example, it helped us get a totally different perspective on our topic. The members were of different countries and spoke different languages; however, they tried their best to express their opinions and experiences. Our group worked on all the components of the project together, which included the research, reference pages, scripts, and the PowerPoint. I believe our decision to not assign specific tasks to a single individual allowed us to fully understand all the information and get along better due to the fact we all were doing the same amount of work. In a group setting, we had to work together and communicate with one another in order to create a suitable presentation. One thing I saw that our group thrived at was listening to one another. While I view the movie and determine the various norms, behaviors, roles and interaction between group members, as well as individuals the examination within the realm of film can present many of the same components. Thus, our group selected this movie to analyze based on its formation of a cohesive problem-solving group full of unforgettable characters. Secondly, I want to mention our group climate. In my opinion, our group has a supportive climate. Each member is willing to help other members in the group to complete their tasks. Our group favors description compared to evaluation. Instead of criticizing others’ behaviors and ideas, we often tell our feelings about problems. All the group members always encourage each other to share their opinions and feelings with the group. Even though some opinions are too conflicting, the main purpose is trying to give all the members equal opportunities to talk about their ideas. Thus, the success of the group is the consequence from the equal contributions of all the members. Besides, in most of the discussions of our group, we are oriented toward problem solving; therefore, we look for the consensus of the ideas in order to solve the problems effectively and quickly. Because our group has many members who have senses of humor, we always maintain an interesting and comfortable atmosphere to gain assertiveness in the group. Sometimes, Ngoc and Phong share their experiences of how they solve their families’ problems. Through perceiving more deeply about each member’s own life, we have gradually gotten closer together; therefore, we are always honest and open to each other. The chapter explains everything ranging from how to come up with ideas for your speech to how to deliver it effectively. Having read this chapter before I proceeded on doing my Speed Introduction Speech, helped me tremendously on what messages I should be communicating in my speech, which is the part that I have struggled the most in all of my writing and speech assignments. One incident in where I notice supportive group communication climate was when Olivia, Amanda, Nick and Fin needed to find Vicki. Once they found her they realized she was being pimped and they collaborated in how they were going to get Tre, the pimp. The way that this affected the group during its communication decision-making was by being able to effectively communicate and effectively come up with solution to their problem. On the other hand, one incident where I notice defensive group communication climate was when Fin and the other detectives were trying to interrogate Tre and Vicki. Considering chapters four through six of the course text, a group vote determined that the three most important concepts between all group members are: effective ways of communication, conflict management, and social media. The concept of communication was initially discussed solely, but was determined to be far too broad. After the initial collaboration, the group condensed the concept of communication to effective ways of communication.
Communication is essential in our society today. There are many different types and methods of communication that people use. Throughout life, people learn to use communication in order to interact in the everyday world. People form groups to place themselves where they think they belong in society. Whether people know they are doing it or not, they consciously or subconsciously place themselves into certain groups. There are many different reasons for people to join different groups, these being for learning, activity, personal growth, and problem solving. When doing so the other group members were active listener, by using their whole body verbally and nonverbal. Like facing the speaker and giving eye contact and try to avoided interruption. The group also acknowledges the thoughts of the speaker by giving constructive feed back. Due to the effectiveness of the group communication, we were able to build trust, respect and understand the issues and make decision for effective change. We illustrate this by coming together as a group one again to accomplish the goal we initially wanted to accomplish. Since the first organization that we had chosen was incorrect, so we had to make the necessary changes to accomplish our goals. The other effective feature is the purpose of the group. Kozier et al (2010) stated that the effective group purpose is when “goal, task, and outcomes are clarified. Understanding and modified so that members of the group can commit themselves to purposes through cooperation” (p.401). For instance, each individual was assign a task and knew what was to be accomplished. As group we all decided to meet at suitable day and time which was beneficial to all team members, because we could commit to the group and focus on what needed to be achieved.
My feelings about the group process was a little mix at first but, at the end I felt like we actually brought it together. Beginning of the group member were all over the place and had no direction, when we were able to take a breather in just think ideas started to flow. I felt like that took the communicator to make it happen. By reinsuring the other group members that everything will go smoothly if we just don’t overthink everything.
Effective group communications come in forms of verbal and non-verbal techniques. Essential parts of the entire group’s contribution are that the group contains full participating members, the group is diverse, and that the diversity is recognized and respected (Hartley, 1997). In the videos viewed, three were evaluated on the effective and ineffective communication skills of the participants and suggestions made on how they could improve. The videos are titled, “Planning a Playground”, “Helping Annie”, and "The Politics of Sociology.
The two projects gave me ample opportunity to work in a group. I learned that effective communication in a group plays an important role in ensuring that information gets across and there were no misunderstandings. In the two presentations, our group had emphasized on effective communications. We made sure that we do not complicate technical terms and ensured that we presented in clear and succinct manner.
