He looks around the Island in search of other people so he can get food and a place to sleep for the night. While searching he is able to find a manor of sorts that has General Zaroff, a man who says to him that the only way to escape the island is to beat him in a hunt. What kind of characters are Rainsford and General Zaroff though? Both General Zaroff and Rainsford are similar in a few ways but they are both very different kinds of characters. In “The Most Dangerous Game”, Sanger Rainsford can be described as a resourceful, dangerous, and clever person. Rainsford is clever because he knows how to make …show more content…
General Zaroff is similar to Rainsford because they are both Dangerous, and Zaroff shows this in the story because he has hunted a lot. This is seen in the story when it says, “God makes some men poets, Some he makes king, some beggars, Me he made a hunter.” (Page 48). He was born with a gift for hunting. However, Zaroff is different from Rainsford because he is militaristic, which he shows through his past and his looks. An example of this is seen in the story, which states “I went into the military… and for a time commanded a division of Cossack cavalry” (Page 44). He was able to lead a division of the military. Zaroff is also different since he can be described as self-justified, because he is okay with hunting people. In the text, this is shown when it says, “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if needs be, taken by the strong.” (Page 49). He feels that is someone can’t beat them they don’t need to be living. Zaroff and Rainsford may both be dangerous, but the fact that Zaroff is self-Justified and Militaristic make him a completely different kind of
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford is shown as brave, intelligent, and worldly. Rainsford is shown to be brave in the story when he jumps off a cliff. “Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea.” (Connell 80). This quote shows that Rainsford is brave because, during this part, he is risking
Brief summary: The Most Dangerous Game is about hunter Sanger Rainsford, who washes up on the shore of an island called Ship Trap Island that has a terrible infamy, where he soon meets General Zaroff, who hunts human beings which is the most dangerous game for sport. Zaroff hunts Rainsford, but in the end Rainsford gets the better of him.
Richard Connell’s The Most Dangerous explains multiple theories, such as nature versus nurture, and survival of the fittest. This short story also seems to have an underlying theme of Social Darwinism (Of Two Classes). Throughout the entirety of the short story, Connell shows a character change of a main character, Rainsford, who is at a constant battle with General Zaroff, the antagonist. This character change shows the importance of the mindset of characters, and how it can be applied to everyday life.
The men both have several similarities. Rainsford and Zaroff both are hunters that have savage personalities, which causes them to have no affinity for the animals they hunt. Both men are massively intelligent. Rainsford and Zaroff both have very arrogant attitudes, which had them concluding that they're better than all other hunters in the world.
Underestimation and cruel actions lead to many things. In “The Most Dangerous Game,” author Richard Connell reveals a conflict between the main characters, General Zaroff and Rainsford. Rainsford was to play the most dangerous game created by Zaroff, because the only way to survive, is to win it, otherwise death is the only other option. As demonstrated through the use of personification, symbolism, and repetition in the story, it conveys that one should understand to never underestimate another person and remember that there will always be a consequence for the wicked things that one has done.
Zaroff is purely unconscious, and has no compassion or remorse for his actions. His demented mind forces him to believe that it is moral to hunt all living creatures, when in reality he is actually murdering a human soul. The general is sadistic as well as arrogant. He is mentally unstable, insane, and he denies the fact that he is committing something as bad as what he is doing. According to General Zaroff, hunting for him has been consumed by boredom and he no longer sees hunting as a challenge. Consequently, he chooses to hunt a certain “creature” with a higher mental stability of the creatures he has hunted before.(Connell 21) As Zaroff became comfortable with Rainsford, he
Another conflict in the story The Most Dangerous game is man vs man. Rainsford doesn't want to fight General Zaroff because he isn't confident in winning the dangerous game. But after General Zaroff forces Rainsford to play the game rainsford said “your
Rainsford is not a hero due to his egocentric attitude and hypocritical behavior. After Rainsford hears the hounds and sees Ivan and General Zaroff approaching, he then creates a trap to kill General Zaroff. When Rainsford hears the footsteps stop, he looks back at the trap and “[sees] in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet. But Ivan was not. The knife, driven by the recoil of the springing tree, had not wholly failed” (Conell 14). This quote proves that Rainsford does not obtain the qualities of an altruistic and civil being. This is due to Rainsford wanting to kill General Zaroff for his own survival. Furthermore, once Rainsford accidentally kills Ivan, he swims away in refuge from General Zaroff.
Throughout this journal, Zaroff can be characterized as mysterious and evil. First off, Zaroff is mysterious. One way he is mysterious is that he knows Rainsford’s name and he read Rainsford’s hunting book. In the book it says, “I’ve read your book about hunting snow leopards in Tibet…” (Connell 3). This quote shows that Zaroff is interested in hunting dangerous animals and knows that Rainsford is good at hunting
Rainsford is certainly a brave character. ‘“Hunting, Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder” (110). Rainsford is composed until he figures out that Zaroff’s new species is human beings. Rainsford has just met this man, doesn’t know where he is or anything about those people but he still puts his foot down. Rainsford knew it was murder, and so did Zaroff, but it was brave for Rainsford to tell him he would not keep a secret of what Zaroff was doing and Rainsford demanded to be taken home immediately. Rainsford was brave to tell Zaroff, straight forward, that he would not participate in his game. ‘“Ivan,” he said to Rainsford, “will supply you with hunting clothes, food, and a knife”’ (170). Rainsford was now in the game and had to participate. His bravery came out when a three day duel was forced against his will.
In “The Most Dangerous Game” Sanger Rainsford can be described as intelligent, rational, and skillful person. Rainsford is intelligent because he
Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. For instance General Zaroff said “Your brain against mine, Your woodcraft against mine.” (Connell 6). This shows that General Zaroff gives right to rainsford to try and outsmart him and try to win by surviving. If rainsford outsmarts him then he will get the victory or he can do what Zaroff wanted to do to him which was kill him. Also Rainsford disagreed when Zaroff told him about the hunting game. “No,General,”he said “I will not hunt.” Then Zaroff basically said he had to or ivan will kill him.(Connell 9).This quote means that Rainsford did not like the idea that he had to stay in a jungle and
In “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford is terrified to find that General Zaroff is actually a murder. Rainsford is listening intently to the new “species” that General Zaroff is describing as hunt for his game. General Zaroff has a passion and has become obsessed with hunt because it “had been (his) life”, but sadly “hunting was beginning to bore (him)”. He was eager to continue hunting because of how much he enjoyed it. He needed a new way to satisfy himself while still involving himself in hunting. He decided to go to the extremity of killing people to satisfy himself and make him find new excitement in the one hobby that used to be his life and his source of happiness. General Zaroff’s love and passion for hunting cause him to kill and murder because hunting animals was not satisfying him anymore. Rainsford realizes that he is in the presence of a murderer and when General Zaroff is describing how he has found a new hunt for killing Rainsford figures out that “what (General Zaroff) speak of is murder”. While Zaroff is defending himself by saying that he is not murdering, he does not realize that he sounds foolish because he is saying that he has fallen in love with hunting of humans’ The idea that someone is no joke, but General Zaroff thinks “it’s a game”. Consequently, General Zaroff’s dark side comes through because his love for hunting
Sanger Rainsford is cunning, serious, and determined in the story “The Most Dangerous Game” because he is capable of successfully defeating Zaroff, despite the fact that his enemy seems to be holding all the
Sanger Rainsford is a civil man who respects human life in the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” written by Richard Connell. Rainsford thinks killing humans for sport is inhumane and murderous. On the other hand Zaroff is unintelligent, overconfident and finds hunting humans for sport is normal and entertaining.
