Compare and Contrast Essay By definition; love is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person. Love can be interrupted in many ways. Were we ever taught love or is it just a natural feeling towards a person? Some say you'll know the meaning of love when you fall in love, yet some don't believe in love at all. The sculpture “LOVE” created by Robert Indiana and the sculpture “The Kiss” made by Auguste Rodin both share some of the same meanings behind the art work (Indianapolis Museum of Art) (Rodin's The Kiss Sculpture). A major similarity between the two is love; which attracts and speaks to people all around the world. Although they are spoken in different ways, they both have the idea of making love. This piece is also an abstract form of art and more modern the color is red and has a feeling of happiness and joy and you have the urge to feel love just by seeing it so large and up front. “LOVE” has always been placed out in the open demanding attention from a lot of people to see. “The Kiss” is more of a classic form of art and has been placed in more private areas. Although it has a distressing grey color “The Kiss” has more depth; the feeling of intimacy is strong and makes a statement. There are both similarities and differences in “The Kiss” and “LOVE”. The emotion and meaning behind both are incredible, it shows and understands the meanings of love, lust, joy, and intimacy. Love can either be spelt out or expressed by action and is what both pieces show. Love can be interrupted in many ways, but there always has to be a kiss in love. Works Cited 1.) In art, there are qualities that speak louder than words. It expresses many different messages and emotions and each person has an experience different from the next. In this paper, I will be discussing two artworks I encountered. The piece is a good example of how people can encounter different experiences in one piece. I attended the Orlando Museum of Art a while back with family and overall enjoyed my experience. On my visit, I found the museum quite impressive and felt a deep connection with specific pieces.
Jews suffered countless amounts of atrocities throughout the history of time. Both stories have themes in which man is evil to man, the will of the main character to survive and overcome evil is present, and the ability of some people to still be compassionate to each other during these times of evil. The book Maus, and the movie “The Pianist,” share many thematic similarities.
Brent Staples of “Just Walk On By”, Judith Ortiz Cofer of “The Myth of the Latin Woman”, and Alice Walker of “Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self” had discovered their personal/cultural knowledge and identity through their experiences. They might have different experiences in different situation or incident it has the same concept. Brent Staples and Judith Cofer had similarly uncovered how they are being alienated especially in their foreign place. They both had experienced to be mistaken as somebody else. Brent Staples was once mistaken for a burglar in a magazine company and a mugger in a jewelry store. Cofer was also mistaken as a waitress by an old woman while she was holding her notebook which an old woman thought a menu
Young men who are sent to a war learn the reality in a very harsh and brutal way. Both the stories, ‘The Red Convertible’ and ‘The Things They Carried’ portray the life of a young soldier and how he psychologically gets affected from all the things he had seen in the war. Tim O’Brien’s ‘The Things They Carried,’ is more specific on the experiences of a soldier during a war where as Karen Louise Erdrich focuses more on describing the post war traumatic stress in her short story ‘The Red Convertible’. One thing similar in both the narrations is the Vietnam War and its consequences on the soldiers. From the background of both the authors it’s easy to conclude that Tim O’Brien being a war veteran emphasizes more on the
While the LOVE sculpture is in fact a sculpture, it actually originated as a print image for the Museum of Modern Art Christmas card in 1964. Shortly after it became a popular postage stamp, while finally becoming a sculpture in 1970. The idea behind this work of art originated when the Museum of Modern Art asked Indiana to design a Christmas card. He reflected upon his nomadic childhood, remembering posters he had frequently seen at a Christian Science churches with the words “God is love (Robert Indiana Works.)” He took this concept of love and stacked the LO on top of the VE in red, green, and blue, and added further interest by tilting the O. While this became a popular icon in the United States and beyond, Indiana refused to copyright his famous image and variations of it. Since this image was being rapidly reproduced by the public, many people incorrectly labeled Indiana as a sell out, even though he made very little money from his famous LOVE sculpture (Wilde.) Robert Indiana, birth name Robert Clark, was born in New Castle, Indiana in 1928. Being praised for his artwork by his elementary school teacher is what motivated him to pursue the career of art, leading him to join the Airforce for three years and after attend the Art Institute of Chicago, the Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting in Maine, and the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland (Biography Robert Indiana.) Analyzing Rodin’s work at first glance can enable a person to tap into their creative side without the use words, but physical expression to display emotional content. Of course, Rodin work was initially unappreciated, but it did come with accolades. He marked the birth of a transformated and novelty form of art in the 1890’s and since then is a laudable artist that we cannot forget.
I took the sculpture from the shelf and began to study it. I was overcome by the beauty of the large hand holding a jagged stone, on one side of which the figure of two lovers had been sculpted.
A vignette from The House on Mango Street, "Those Who Don't," by Sandra Cisneros, the poem "My Parents Kept Me from Children Who Were Rough," by Stephen Spender, and another poem "We Real Cool," by Gwendolyn Brooks share many similarities and differences. These three pieces of literature talk about racism and rough children. "Those Who Don't" is about racism and how people think about others without getting to know them. "My Parents Kept Me from Children Who Were Rough" explains how a good child wants to be like other children who are bad. "We Real Cool" talks about pool players who are bad. These pieces of literature compare and contrast between figurative language, point of view, and theme.
The woman and man are embracing each other creating unity in the composition of the sculpture. The man’s left arm is draped over the woman’s back as his hand rests over her left breast while his right arm is down parallel to his side and his hand is in a fist. The woman’s
In James Joyce’s short stories “The Dead” “A little cloud” and “A Mother” from his novel The Dubliner, Joyce shows characters who despite having moderately successful lives are afraid or disappointed to have not lived their greatest dreams and desire. Each character is angered, confused and flustered by this and their smorgasbord of emotions is what makes each of these stories an intrigue but unique experience to read. Each story seems to have a deeper connection to the other, in particular “The Dead” “A Little Cloud” and “A Mother”.
The Kiss, as was named by the public, was created by Auguste Rodin. He created this sculpture between 1888 and 1898. The sculpture is categorized as a ‘sculpture-in-the-round’, simply due to the free standing aspect of the artwork. It also allows for the audience to walk around it and view it from various angles, which also allows it to be named a ‘sculpture-in-the-round’. Auguste Rodin captures the moments that two lovers find their passion and lover for one another and attempt to kiss for the very first time. It depicts two lovers mid-kiss, also touching intimately. The two lovers are perched among a rough jagged rock and both of them are completely nude. “The Kiss originally represented Paolo and Francesca, two characters borrowed, once
There are numerous other abstract wood sculptures of sensual nature, polished and smooth that help provide a background of how these artist made the transition including the two from The Khoan and Michael Sullivan Collection (images pg 4) wood sculptures, one done in 1981 “Couple” and the other “Untitled” in 2005. “Couple” is cylindrical mainly due to the bamboo material, and yet the this piece is one of movement, graceful flowing curves accentuated by the void areas throughout the piece. The contouring lines are beveled providing a 3D human forms intertwined. The lightness of the bamboo color resembles a warm flesh in a satin finish which still allows the natural bamboo joint to remain as an accent and a horizontal element at the arm and shoulder portion of the form. This is a harmonious piece and stylized abstracted human elements. This open and airy piece is a total separation from the solid pieces “Idol” and “Silence” and is more akin to the “Man and Woman” expression. The “Couple” sculpture piece may have been a gift to Michael Sullivan in
The sculptor Auguste Rodin used marble to create his sculpture The Kiss. It is two nude lovers sharing a kiss. According to the book on pg. 414, “They were engaged in a passionate kiss and the couple was originally conceived to be a part of Rodin’s Gates of Hell, two large bronze door depicting scenes from a masterpiece of medieval.” This quote demonstrates that his work was inspired by love and it wouldn’t have been as passionate if he wasn’t inspired. This sculpture according to ITP, “ illustrates a moment in the lives of a young man and woman whose tragic story was recounted in the Inferno. While visiting the second circle of Hell, dwelling place of those who had committed sins of the flesh, two ill-starred lovers famous in medieval Italy
Then, everything with artful beauty is normally put out on display in museums for everyone to see, point fingers, and 'ohh' and 'ahh'. The Kiss is memorialized in the Musée Rodin, a museum dedicated to the artist. Originally was a hit at its unveiling in its first exhibit in 1877 in Paris. It was originally going to be a part of another sculpture “The Gates of Hell”, but later it got a full sized version in 1889. It was shown at Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1889 for its first public appearance. One year later, it was moved to Musée du Luxembourg, where it became no longer free to the public due to its almost provocative nature. The Kiss only resided there for another eighteen years before being hulled to its current home at Musée Rodin in Paris, France. Some pieces of work are flaunted in open areas for all to see. LOVE is showcased in New York City
