In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” the Grandmother is the protagonist. She is the focus of the narrative and the character whose reactions we encounter the most. More importantly, the third person narrative focuses strongly on the grandmother’s point of view, which establishes her in the reader’s mind much more than any other character. Nevertheless, the grandmother views herself as a rather dignified and traditional woman who appears to judge everyone, but manages to constantly overlook her own flaws. This appears various times such as when she conveys her ideas about the upcoming vacation and June Star states “She has to go everywhere we go” (O’Connor 567), in which merely displays the Grandmother as unwanted by the family. Moreover, she is censorious of her son and daughter in law for not allowing their children to “see different parts of the world and be broad” (O’Connor 567). She is also critical of her grandchildren for not being like children “In my time” (O’Connor 569) who “were more respectful” (O’Connor 569). In Flannery O’Conner’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” there were reasons why the Misfit, the wanted prisoner, killed the grandmother, the selfish prominent character. Although she did not want to travel in the direction the Misfit was headed, her selfish decisions led her and her family in an unfortunate accident which led them to be approached by the Misfit. His psychological instability, his moral code and being recognized by the grandmother ultimately led to her demise.

In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, it starts out by having the family go on a vacation to Tennessee and not to Florida because there is a Misfit on the loose. On their way, the family passes different landmarks including a cotton field and a restaurant. The Grandmother realizes that there was a plantation she once visited nearby. On their way to the house, she realizes that the house is not actually where she says it was and she jerks herself making the cat jump in front of the drivers face making him crash the car. A passing car comes and the Grandmother points out it’s the Misfit with his two men. The Misfit says, “you shouldn’t have said who I was, you should have kept it a secret” (O’ Connor 1241). This forces the Misfit to send his men to go kill John Wesley and Bailey in the woods. The grandmother then looks to the Misfit and asks him to pray. The Grandmother then says that “you are like one of my own children” (O’ Connor 1245) and after that the Misfit shoots and kills the Grandmother. He wishes that it didn’t have to end that way because he is proclaiming he is not a bad man, he didn’t find pleasure out of it.

The Misfit on the other hand is a borderline psychopath, who is extremely violent; he commits these violent crimes on people and sees nothing wrong with it. The Misfit does not see the things he does as wrong because he had to serve time in prison for a crime he claims he did not do, so all of his actions have been paid for by his time in prison. He told the Grandmother “Jesus thrown everything off balance. It was the same case with Him as with me except he hadn’t committed any crime and they could prove I had committed one because they had the papers on me (461).” He compares himself to Jesus because of his thoughts of his innocence. He believes since neither of them committed a crime and both got charged for something they did not do that they are the same. He believes everything wrong he does has been paid for by his unnecessary jail time.
