I Robot, directed by Alex Proyas, is a film that shows how modern technology will advance within the years; making people question their everyday lifestyle. In I Robot, the main character Detective Del Spooner, had us follow his journey on questioning societal expectations. This all began from the creation that Dr. Alfred Lanning, who created the robots as well as V.I.K.I. The main NS5 robot in the movie is named Sonny, who questioned his purpose of life as a robot. This Film was designed to have us question, understand the rules and order in situations and evolve with society.

With Robots becoming a popular part of our everyday lives people are beginning to question if people are treating robots with the same respect that they treat people with. Researchers are also beginning to wonder if there need to be laws to protect robots from being tortured or even killed. Scientists have done research to test and see if people react the same to robots as they would to actual people or animals. Artificial intelligence is present in world, imagine what the world will be like in one hundred years. There are two examples that show that artificial life is dangerous, Frankenstein and Blade Runner.. Throughout history, people have made works of art both praising and criticizing the development of science and technology. The novel by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, shows an older form of this type of work, while the film, Ex Machina, shows the modern version of this. In both of the stories a new being is created, and while in the film the consequences of creating life are somewhat more thought out, both result in the deaths of the creators and others. This paper is going to analyze how different aspects of these two pieces compare including: their characters, their stories, and the themes or morals of the works. Both Frankenstein and Ex Machina involve realizing the complexities of life. They highlight the strengths and weaknesses of man, and warn of the advancements of the sciences. While neither are outright saying that science and advancement is a bad thing, they warn of the consequences of new technologies as well as the lack of understanding and planning. In the end, both of these stories warn and teach the reader or viewer about the shortcomings of mankind.

After watching the movie I, Robot, I find that many ethical issues come about from the technology shown in the movie. The movie takes place in 2035 and is about robots that are programmed with Three Laws: First Law-A robot must never harm a human being or, through inaction, allow any harm to come to a human; Second Law-A robot must obey the orders given to them by human beings, except where such orders violate the First Law; Third Law- A robot must protect its own existence unless this violates the First or Second Laws. In discussions of Artificial Intelligence, one controversial issue has been that A.I could at one point start control themselves and go against the owner. On the one hand, some people argue that A.I could be helpful in many other ways like with technology and in certain fields. On the other hand, some people oppose it because they can take away a lot of jobs just by having these things. Others believe that A.I is a good thing because it can be used in certain types of fields. My own view is that Artificial Intelligence is a bad thing because of all things that can go wrong and because of the jobs it can take away.

Which is exactly what happens in (R.U.R) and Ex Machina, the way that they are created and how they communicate with humans is essential. In the book “Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence” by the National Research council staff, and published by National Academies Press, they talk about the importance of Artificial intelligence in the department of defense, especially in this day and age. They talk about how AI could help increase national security while reducing the risk for humans in hostile environments (ch.2 pg. 14). Along with that, it states that if we could advance far enough, the goal is to entirely replace the need to risk human life or injury in hostile places by creating robot surrogates that are programmed to behave in a socially acceptable way. With the combination of humans and remote controlled robots we could productively and safely fulfil necessary functions in very dangerous places. Also mentioned is the high quality and speedy production of systems, computers, and other technologies. Automated production technology is considered inexpensive and effective. To add on to what the National Council has said, I think that it’s rapid, reliable production is a wonderful way of protecting and defending ourselves, some people might argue that these robots are just machinery that costs money and are replacing our jobs, but I believe that the value of a human life is much more expensive than the technology protecting us.

I believe that the benefits of developing full AI outweigh the dangers, as long as AI is developed as an addition to human thinking rather than a replacement. Through the process of developing AI, scientists can learn more about how human cognition works. Right now, the scientific community does not fully understand intelligence, learning or consciousness. To build a fully operational AI computer programmers either need to understand all aspects of intelligence and put them together in one place or design a machine that can learn.
