“The Odysseus” and in the movie “O Brother,Where Art Thou” are both similar even though they are in different time periods. The main thing that connects these two literary works is how Odysseus and his crew travel through uncertain obstacles to make it back home to their homeland as in the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou” we see the comparison as Ulysses escapes from jail and travels with his two prison buddies, Peres and pete as they journey to the secret stash that we letter see isn’t real. Right off the bat in the beginning we see Ulysses and his two buddies meet an old fortune teller on the railroad who gives them wisdom on what their future holds and how their obstacles will interfere with their fortune they are journeying for. This
Book Nine of The Odyssey tells of the encounter between Odysseus and the Cyclops. Homer portrays revenge through violent measures in Odysseus deceiving and blinding the Cyclops. He deceived Polyphemus (one of the Cyclopes) by lying to him and inebriating him. This is revenge for the Cyclops not being hospitable as was customary in the times by eating Odysseus’s men. “I’ll eat the others first! That’s my gift to you!” exclaimed Polyphemus as his form of “hospitality”. Odysseus used a fiery stake and “bored it round in the giant’s eye”. But many may argue that Homer was portraying the theme of justice rather than revenge. There is a blurred line between justice and revenge and it is up to interpretation. It is up for interpretation because
To compare both of the heroes in Hamlet and The Odyssey, they both use a type of deception to carry out revenge against those who have done wrong to them. Both of these characters use a type of madness to invoke revenge against the characters who have betrayed them. Hamlet uses madness with deception to try to take revenge for his father's murder, but instead of that madness helping to protect him, he ends up not being able to fully go through with it which leads to his downfall. Similarly, Odysseus, to achieve revenge against his enemies uses a physical disguise, created by Athena as a type of madness to deceive his enemies into thinking that he is an old man who is a beggar. The difference between Hamlet and Odysseus is that the plan that
The answer to that question is family. Both men have great senses of family; Ulysses has a wife whom he loves and six daughters that he fights to keep custody of over the
But because of the similar traits it as relatable. Batman is famous through comic books, movies, and series on television. While Odysseus is famous through oral storytelling from Homer. Also in the Odyssey people among the trip home that they met have heard of Odysseus before, recognizing him. While some believe that Odysseus was real, Batman is someone that people know is a made up fictional character. The lesson in Odysseus story is that “man is not more powerful than the higher power” or “to never give up”, while the theme for Batman is “justice”. Batman and Odysseus goes through different journeys with different lessons, but their traits of what made them what they are and how the stories are built up is similar. So people do have similar traits in their heroic stories today as 3000 years
Both the ‘Odyssey’ and ‘1001 Nights’ feature male protagonists who traverse the seas, and the concepts and themes of men seafaring is common throughout most canonical texts. For example, the allusion of Odysseus’ difficult journey is made when a minor male character in Apuleius’ ‘The Golden Ass’ describes his seafaring adventures as being ‘positively Ulyssian’ (‘Ulyssian’ thus being a reference the Roman naming of Odysseus) (pg 29). Furthermore, both texts share themes, such as: seafaring, the supernatural, trials and tribulations, tradition, belief systems, and the geographical setting and pride in the protagonist’s home city play a key role to the overarching plots of the texts in the sense of the protagonist’s endurance and motivation to both leave and return home. Likewise, the supernatural is used to further the plot of both texts.
In the two novels the Homers Odyssey and Apeleius’ The Golden Ass, entailed these two main characters that undergoes these over the top adventures and experiences to acquire their goal. Both Odysseus and Lucius struggle along their long journey home and endured multiple obstacles along the way. Although both storylines were problematic and held many challenges, when compared to one another, I feel as though in The Golden Ass, Lucius underwent more hardships to finally reach his goal. Lucius not only was put through more physical pain then Odysseus but he was stripped of his manhood in every way possible and had to live his life as a donkey. Unlike Odysseus he also had to continue living in solitude. No one was to know he was a man in a donkey’s body, for that could cause an uproar, which would then lead to his early death. In contrast Odysseus didn’t live in such seclusion because various Gods helped him and most of them as well as others always praised as being “godlike”. As Lucius continued his journey on the other hand, in the form of a donkey he wasn’t praised like Odysseus was. Neither similar animals to Lucius nor humans praised him as much as Odysseus was praised.
The Odyssey is an epic poem written by homer that tells the story of the long travel of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his men. Odysseus and his men encountered a lot of bumps along the road until Odysseus finally makes it home from the Trojan War. They face cyclops, gods, goddesses, sirens, and many more characters. In the film O Brother Where Art Thou? Directed by Ethan and Joel Coen, takes place in the 1930s where Ulysses, Demer, and Pete escape prison in search of a treasure in which they encounter a blind railroad worker, a one eyed man named Big Dan, and many more interesting characters. These two plots contains many similarities from the name of the main character to the experiences the men find themselves in.
Both famous heroes from antiquity, Jason and Odysseus have much in common and just as much not. It has been said that The Voyage of the Argo, written centuries past The Odyssey, is an imitation or some form of plagiarism of the primary epic poem of ancient Greece. I like the other train of thought; it is more an acknowledgement or tip of the hat, so to speak, specifically to The Odyssey. Both tales center on a hero and a fantastic voyage. Jason was less the virtuous demi-God we see in Odysseus. At first glance, he appeared an unlikely hero. Not so Odysseus, who embarked on what, should have been a short journey home following the fall of Troy, but became an epic journey with many obstacles and delays along the way.
The main character in Oh Brother is Everett. Both of them traveled for many years. For strength and confidence, Odysseus carried a sword and spear. For his strength and confidence, Everett carried a comb and his hair cream, which was called Dapper Dan. Odysseus was a warrior and a hero while Everett was a criminal. Both had crews that tagged along with them. Both had left their wives to travel. Odysseus’ wife was named Penelope. Everett’s wife was named Penny. Both of those names start with
The Odyssey by homer tells the story of a demigod named Odysseus. Odysseus is a brave and determined man, yet seemingly troubled. With human traits, Odysseus must go on a journey that transpires over two decades. Odysseus serves as the model for an epic hero. An epic hero is a symbol of something that is great, someone that is in tune with others needs and is considerate of how their own actions will affect others around him. Though this idea comes from an ancient story, it is still relevant in modern popular culture. One example of a modern-day epic hero is Harry Potter. A Hero created by J.K. Rowling for The Harry Potter series, Harry Potter clearly shares many characteristics with Odysseus. Odysseus is the model for the modern-day epic hero, Harry Potter, who shares Odysseus’ characteristics of determination and bravery by not allowing the way he is treated change his personality and by not being scared to take risks.
This myth is about Odysseus and the giant cyclops Polyphemus. After the Island of the lotus eater he saw a land full of lambs and his crew and he were tired and hungry. So when they entered the cave they saw a table set full with a great meal on the table so they started feasting. Then the Cyclops came home and was furious and eat 2 men. When the giant was asleep the men took a 6ft spike and heated the tip and drove it through the giant's eye. Next day when the sheep were to be let out the blind giant stood over the exit but the men on the crew were prepared the hid under the lambs bellys and snuck out. When they made it back on the ship Odysseus called out “O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions? And the giant blind cyclops thew a huge
The new movie version of To Kill a Mockingbird should include the scene from the book were Scout eavesdrops on Atticus’ conversation with Uncle Jack. This conversation happens right after Scout, Jem, Uncle Jack, and Atticus, go to visit Scout’s Aunt Alexandra and her family. At Aunt Alexandra’s house, her son Francis starts to call Scout and Atticus bad names because Atticus is representing Tom Robinson’s case in court and he is black. One of the earliest examples of Greek epic heroes are those by Homer, The Iliad, and The Odyssey, both surrounding their respectful heroes Achilles and Odysseus in the Trojan/greek war. These heroes, though both by Homer, vary greatly in how the ideas of heroism has been interpreted, though both still relevant heroes in their time. While both are considered great heroes with vast similarities, they also couldn't be more different. Both men have personal loses, and are tested by Gods throughout their heroic journeys. They both have high senses of their duties as a hero, leader, and warrior. They also have outstanding courage, bravery, and compassion.
Hero versus hero who will win! This essay is about two heroes, Odysseus and my dad. Odysseus and my dad are different but they're both heroes. I will show why both are heroes and explain why their different.
Escaping from a man eating cyclops is no easy task, and neither is fighting the Dark Lord himself. Odysseus is a very intelligent and motivated man who is the King of Ithaca. He fights in the Trojan war but gets stuck sailing on the sea searching for his way home. Harry Potter is also a very intelligent boy. At a very young age his parents were killed by Lord Voldemort. Voldemort attempted to kill Harry too, but failed, making Harry the boy who lived. On Harry’s 11th birthday, he received many letters inviting him to attend Hogwarts, a School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. A man named Hagrid comes to take him and that is where Harry's journey begins. They are pretty similar, but in some ways they differ. Some similarities are that they use their wits and strengths to get their way through problems, and they both have a desire to see their family. But they also differ in the way that their goals are completely different, Odysseus wants to get home to Ithaca, and Harry wants to stay as far away from his “home,” with the Dursleys as possible. So they use their brain as a problem solver, they have a longing for their family, but they both want to go in a different direction.
