As a child, Poe would watch his mother perform on stage every night. He would be sitting front row watching the beautiful actress commit suicide every night due to her role as Juliet from Shakespeare's famous play. After the curtains closed, Poe’s mother would take young Edgar and go on with her evening (Edgar Allan Poe). Now, as an impressionable young child, Poe would see his mother die on stage and then see her “come back to life”. This led to Poe’s fascination with death. Death is something that will happen to everyone eventually. Death is not a thing that can be easily shaked off as if it were nothing. Some people fear death, others wait for it, and some don’t give a care in the world, being too busy enjoying life. Death is something that can happen either peacefully or painfully. Death relates to the hidden message in Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” by trying to give the meaning that no matter who the person is and what the person tries to do, no one is capable of being able to escape death.

The gloomy setting of the poem predicts the visit of the Raven, whom is a sign of misfortune, darkness, and death. Throughout the poem, the narrator is continually mourning his wife, Lenore. He secretly hopes that the Raven will bring good news regarding his wife and his future; however, the Raven informs him that he will forever remain depressed. Edgar Allan Poe was a brilliant poet who endured an incredibly harrowing life. It seemed as if everyone he became close to would decease before his eyes. His grim life served as inspiration for his work which take on eerie, nightmarish tones and themes, likely because those disturbing subjects are what he knew best. Edgar Allan Poe is a famous american author who wrote many poems and short stories. His stories almost always have a deeper meaning behind them. In the short story “The Masque of the Red Death” Edgar Allan Poe uses a mixture of stylistic elements such as symbolism, diction, figurative language, and imagery to scare the audience, show how being selfish is problematic, and point out the inevitability of death.

Every story ever written has a conflict associated with it, thats what makes it a story, what continues the story is the character, the decisions, reactions. All characters react differently to different things, which break them down or build them up. This is shown in the three books “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”,”The Raven” and “The Masque Red Death”.”Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” was the story about a lawyer, Mr Utterson, who knows a friend Dr Jekyll, who is kind, civil and pretty sane. It is discovered of a man named Mr Hyde who is violent, mean and overall revolting. After a lot of digging Mr Utterson discovers that Mr Hyde and Dr Jekyll are the same person. In “The Raven” the narrator is lamenting over the loss of his love, Lenore, when a raven comes tapping at his window, reminding him of his loss forevermore. Finally, the story of “The Masque Red Death” is about Prince Prospero throwing a party to block out the death and destruction of the awful plague Red Death in his kingdom, ultimately ignoring all the peasants. Eventually his walls failed him and he succumbed to death as well. Both authors use conflict to show the true nature of a character through how they handle stressful situations.

When we bring the topic about death it is very horrific thought depending on how you look at it. On the other hand, when I read Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven”, I was very shock at that very moment by the new approach that was my attention getter about death. When talking about the topic of death it is known to have a connotation with horror and sorrow. Edgar Allan Poe made a hint comparing the two and at the same time approaching other ideas that portrayed death. The feelings that are being constructed in the story plays a role with relating sorrow base upon a mental issue, a feeling that death attached itself to one individual and destroy their life forever.

“The Raven”, being Poe’s most eminent poem, features a narrator preoccupied by thoughts of his deceased wife Lenore. Prior to Poe writing this, Virginia became ill and Lenore is furthermore utilized as her indirect symbol. The poem “ The Raven” is very notorious for its symbolism. Of the many interpretations of symbolism three stuck out the most, Lenore, the narrator's door, and Pallas. The First intriguing interpretation of symbolism is the narrator’s dead wife lenore. Lenore would be Edgar Poe’s wife Virginia who sadly died, this is him mourning his loss in his poem and in his life. The second interpretation is his chamber door which is very intriguing if thought about. The chamber door represents the barrier between life and death. Finally, Pallas of which the raven lands on, Pallas was the daughter of Triton who was killed by Zeus’s daughter. This all represents Virginia in someway especially her beauty and paleness which was symbolism
