The summer solstice will occur on June 21st, which is also the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. In ancient times, the summer solstice was celebrated with festivals and other observances. Many of these traditions still continue today. Ways Different Cultures Celebrated The Summer Solstice The Ancient Chinese The ancient Chinese held a ceremony on the day of the summer solstice. They celebrated the Earth and femininity. They also celebrated a force known as yin. It was the exact opposite of the winter solstice, which celebrated yang, masculinity and the heavens. The Ancient Europeans The ancient Europeans would celebrate the beginning of summer by lighting bonfires. This is a tradition that many Germans still participate in.
