Core Competencies Management is challenging and requires competencies distinctly different from other positions. After a brief six month tenure with my current employer, my manager resigned and a door opened for me in management. I was promoted to Claims Manager and suddenly tasked with additional responsibility and supervision of another employee. There was no job description for this position at the time and competencies had not been formally established. However, our company transitioned to competency based performance model the year following my promotion and required competencies were established. Understanding the required competencies of a Claims Manager, the skills I possessed that aligned with competencies, and the development of other competencies was essential to my success in that role.

However, this position required different skills and competencies than the one I was in previously. By definition a skill is a proficiency at being able to do something while a competency is a cluster of knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable a person to be successful at a number of similar tasks (Blanchard & Thacker, 2013). The ability to prioritize tasks and develop systematic methods to tackle projects are skills that I already had that aligned with the required competencies of time management and organization. Accountability and reliability were an additional two competencies for which I had demonstrated proficiency by ensuring tasks were completed timely, by responding to correspondence and questions timely and accurately, and by maintaining confidence with sensitive

“Competency models describe the behaviors and skills managers need to exhibit if an organization is to be successful” (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, p. 252). In many organizations, competency models can differ between the different hierarchies of managers. As a person’s leadership role evolves so do the behaviors and skills he or she must possess to be an effective leader. This statement holds firm as with the case of Andra Rush.
In order to identify Verizon's core competencies, a SWOT and Five Forces analysis was performed. The SWOT analysis showed internal strengths in technology diversification, a large and talented employee resource pool, and an expansive network footprint. Internal weaknesses were revealed that centered on post merger issues such as corporate culture issues, impending workforce retirements, and a lack of systems or process consolidation. External opportunities include the potential to further capitalize on incumbent status, diverse markets, long distance, and brand identity. Finally, external threats include government regulation, substitution, and a weak economy.

This week in the field as an intern for the Department of Social Services, I was able to complete in-office tasks and complete a home visit with my supervisor. On Monday my supervisor informed me she and other coworkers were in need of creating a new resource manual that would be up to date with the current resources in the Midlands area. Therefore, one of the tasks completed this week was creating a resource manual that would have more resources with up to date numbers, addresses, and contact persons. During this process, I was able to understand the importance of workers having the manual up to date with more resources added to it. Competency skill 9 states a professional social worker, “Actively refers clients to community resources.” With this being required of a professional

Every person gravitate its strengths to step up in life like the best cook in a family makes meals. The mechanically inclined person in a family fixes the broken parts at home and a plant lover takes care of the garden. Similarly, the businesses use their strengths to position themselves in the market. However they follow a formal path for developing core competencies. Successful businesses follow an exact approach to identify and define their core competencies and then jointly follow them. For example, Auto manufacturers restrict themselves only to the tasks that they do best like assembling or designing automobiles, leaving additional tasks for others. This keeps their mission clear and defined.

As CEO I have determined that we should focus on our core competencies in order to achieve and maintain a competitive edge over the industry as well as stay ahead of the curve on what the consumer needs. In order for us to continue to be successful we must constantly be aware of our external environment and the issues that surround it. Through being aware of our surrounding environment we will be able to continuously adapt and prevail within the market. Through the years we have been able to differentiate our brand through our devotion to research and development, adoption of new technologies, knowledge based offerings, as well as our strategical placement (locations, throughout the Midwest “corn-belt”).
