Courage In Beowulf

Loyalty and bravery are themes that are often found in literature, and Beowulf is no exception. It is one of the reasons I find this poem so interesting. Beowulf is the hero of the poem who decides to sail to Denmark with hope of protecting the Danish people from a creature known as Grendel, who has attacked and devoured many of King Hrothgar’s warriors while they were asleep. Like all heroes, Beowulf exhibits true bravery, courage, and puts the people before himself, which makes him a very likely candidate for king. Courage, bravery, and strength are three heroic Anglo-Saxon characteristics that tie together perfectly. Without courage, you will not have strength and bravery. Without strength and bravery, you will not have the courage to face your challenges. The Danes needed a fearless hero to save them after the catastrophe of losing the infamous Herot to Grendel, a descendent of Cain. In the story, it is made obvious that Beowulf is the “good” and Grendel is the “bad”. I consider my mom to be a Beowulf in my life because she shares the same three characteristics as Beowulf: courage, bravery and faith in God. When I think of the word courage, the line that comes to mind is "Often, for undaunted courage, fate spares the man it has not already marked.". (Beowulf, 572 - 573) In this line, Beowulf explains that if your fate has not been decided, then you have the ability to choose your own fate by having courage.

However, the Danes suffered through twelve winters under Grendel because of King Hrothgar’s fear. The strength and bravery of a strong leader and warrior can lead many countries to peace and power. Throughout Beowulf, many characters exhibit courage, which increases their morale on the battlefield and leads to victory.

The Bible and the world both perceive courage as commendable, but at the same time, the motivation behind courage is completely different.

Valor is often seen as an upside to someone’s character, but when very brave, it mistakenly leads to being brave in situations where the dispute is unfavorable. Excessive bravery leads to careless or unneeded acts, times when doing something is insane. Having too much courage results in recklessness. Courage takes over rationality, the outcome being unwise choices, which leads to consequences. In both passages the qualities of bravery leads to unnecessary risks.

Bravery is like a very trusted friend. This statement is told to be true in the tale of Beowulf. In the story, we see Beowulf's heroism and bravery in two very different times, his youth and all through his many different fights with Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon. Through these two phases of his life, we can see that he has pretty much had bravery and courage throughout his entire life. He never backed down from a fight, which eventually is what led him to get terribly injured towards the end of the book.
