Define My Identity

Every year I look back on the previous and I see how much I have changed. I see the friends I have gained and lost. The heartbreak and the happiness. Despite how rough times have gotten, it has truly made me stronger. Everything has shaped who I am today, it has shaped my identity. Identity is a complex topic because it consists of changeable and unchangeable traits and outside internal influences; my own identity has been shaped by going from private to public school, young life camp, and my current friends.

Identity is the personal concept an individual develops during the course of their life. Identity might include some aspects of our life of which we have no control over. For example, our place of birth or the color of our skin. On the contrary, the choices we make in our life, how we spend our days and what we believe in are portions of our identity we have control over. Throughout my life, I have struggled with the question, who am I? The answer today would probably be different to the answer I would have given someone when I was in my early teens.

Identity may be a bit hard to define because of its content its broadness, every country have their own way of building, cooking, praying, playing, joking, fishing, farming, dressing, even speaking.

As of today, the most important aspects of my intersectionalities are my age and race. When I was a child, my mother would often specifically say a Chinese word and show the object itself. The one I can recall most clearly is “Li”, which means pear. Furthermore, she would exhibit various things that are from Chinese culture, such as a Chinese New Year festival and dragon dances on television, the Chinese dragon my brother made in preschool, or Chinese music. Also, I was addicted to fried rice at a young age and I often consumed at Asian restaurants, persuading me to accept my background. As a result, I perceived that my Chinese heritage was an idiosyncratic aspect of myself, making it a foremost aspect of my identity. Furthermore, I was born

I hate when people say “I don’t care if you’re Black, White, Asian, etc.” You should care. Do not erase who I am to make yourself feel comfortable. Do not erase my identity by saying race doesn’t matter. Colorblind ideology will not fix racism. Do not ignore my identity or anyone else’s identity because you’re uncomfortable. Recognize my race and ethnicity and respect that.

I am truly proud of my background and how it has formed my identity. My background consists of me being Portuguese. I could not be any more thankful for how greatly my background has impacted my life into what it is now. It has helped me gain many friends that I am still very close to and gain interests that have started since I was a child. Simply experiencing my family’s numerous customs and traditions is why I love to express that I am Portuguese. It has given me the opportunity to visit Portugal every year during each summer where I fall in love with the country each time. Being Portuguese has taught me many lessons throughout life that I will continue to pass on for future generations of my family.

My identity has essentially changed after some time from the time I was an adolescent till now that I'm a grown-up. Age has fundamentally added to how I see things, how I respond to issues, and how I connect with other individuals. A portion of the elements that have added identity changes as a part of my identity incorporates going into submitted connections and headway in my professions. I have created increment in positive attributes like good faith and a reduction in characteristics that are viewed as negative, for example, neuroticism. Contrasted with the time I was a young person, I have fundamentally turned out to be more mindful, more pleasing, and all the more sincerely steady. Identity. Identity is kind of a funny thing. It is the thing that makes us who we are. I come from a ranching and rodeo and logging background. My mom was a barrel racer with my vice principal, Mrs.Fuzico. My dad was a real horseman and logger when he was younger. He had a couple horses and was good no... GREAT at riding and handling horses. My grandma, dad, and childhood have impacted my identity.

Back in high school my group of friends and family members had the most effect on my sense of identity. Growing up I would always admire the way my oldest sister dressed. I would always want to go shopping with her so that she could pick my clothes out for me. She had her own unique style and it was very “chic” to me. As I begin to study her style when I became a teenager I created my own personal style similar to my sister but more suited for me in my own way. Physically in high school I was at a real bad place I wasn’t happy with my weight at all, which almost led to a depression. Emotionally I had to learn to emotionally self-regulate and socially I was pretty well off I was making some friends they just weren’t the friends I wanted to hang out with.

Advertiser have become masters at what they do. As a result advertisement is one of the most lucrative businesses! Advertisers have learned how to target specific groups to get there product sold. Advertisment had also become more apparent on social media as it has become a part of our everyday lives. Advertisers have become crafty and creative with where their ads are found. Being part of the younger generation, advertisers often target my generation and its easy to recognize when. Many times if a company wants its product targeted at youth they include a reference to current pop culture. I am a student, with a meaningful background and identity. If I did not explain and share my story you would not understand who I am as a person, a student, an athlete, a friend, sibling, or a daughter. Identity? Identity is the fact of being who or what a person or thing is. Some people think they know someone’s identity by the external factors but, external factor does not make up an identity because there are also internal factors. My identity is made up of multiple factors.

Identity is very complex, everyone has a different definition and a different idea of what identity is. When one talks about personal identity they are usually talking about how they identify themselves and how they feel as a person. Madan Sarup (1996) talks about identity by using the example of a passport. A passport may include a photograph of the person as well as other details including nationality, a person's full name and date-of-birth. While a passport is a form of identity it does not express who you are as a person. It “show's you who you are so that you can be recognized in a bureaucratic sense” (Sarup, 1996). How do we take advantage of an opportunity given to us? In what way does it influence us to the person we are today? When it comes to my identity, most people describe me based on my appearance, culture, personality, religion, and values. But I describe my identity as how the challenges I face shape me into who I am today. My identity was created by the way I took advantage of the opportunities in my life. We live in a place influenced by the environment and individuals around us, and do not know what the impact has been. Having the opportunity to experience childhood in a challenging way has impacted my life.
