Ashley Ness Pre-AP English II Burgess 1st Hour 10th Grade Pre-AP Summer Reading Assignment The Book Thief Part 1 In the beginning of The Book Thief Death says that he is the person going to be narrating the story. Death also says that we as the readers are going to die. Death takes the soul of Liesel’s little brother, “A six-year-old boy died in the third carriage.” (Page 20) I predict that as Death tells the story of Liesel Meminger he is going to take other peoples lives that are close with Liesel along with her life. I also predict that Death give meaning to as story that people might not have read in the first place. Death might give this story a light of its own with his descriptions. Were they holes for falling into, or patches of extra darkness for hiding in?” (Page 367) This phrase states that there were shadows made by clouds. That’s it’ but what intensifies this passage is the personification. You can’t bury shadows, but by saying this it lets you imagine that the shadows were so dark it looked as if you could fall into them. Another thing that gives this phrase meaning is when it says, “extra darkness for hiding in…” the first thing that you think of is Liesel hiding in shadows with the dusky grass beneath her feet. Part 8 “Dominoes are any of 28 small oblong pieces marked with zero to six dots in each half” (Merriam-webster.com) “Together they would watch everything that was so carefully planned collapse, and they would all smile at the beauty of destruction.” (Page 408) Dominoes symbolize the war. Hitler had everything carefully planned out from how to get rid of the Jews to how to win the war that he had started, but like the dominoes his plan collapsed.
