Discrimination: Discrimination in itself is purposeful exclusion of an individual or group based on specific characteristics. It could be direct, indirect or combined. People that are already vulnerable in most cases find it have to bounce back from it.

In modern times, the United States is bombarded with racism and discrimination. From the confederate flag controversy to police brutality, the United States is reflecting a morbid past. Events such as these are fueled by false understandings of race and ethnicity; leading to stereotypes. For the Irish, Jews, and Italians, stereotypes led to severe discrimination from opportunities and isolation from society.

Discrimination is the act of someone treating another unfairly, unequal, or less favorably because of their race, gender, religion, disability, or sexual orientation. Discrimination affects people and can occur in many places. Discrimination happened during the civil war and made it hard to live through that time.

Discrimination is treating an induvial or group differently. I see this many times when I worked on a PCU floor. Doctors would listen, take my opinion because they knew I was an experienced nurse, but treat the new nurses very differently.

Discrimination has been around for centuries. According to Webster’s dictionary (2016), Discrimination is the practice of unfairly treating a person or group of people differently from other people or groups of people. Race, gender, age, and sexual orientation can all be reasons as to why individuals experiences discrimination, as well as a person’s national origin, weight, and religion. Discrimination has caused enormous suffering across history. In today’s society discrimination still exists, it is far less prevalent however it remains in certain areas, such as the labor market.

To discriminate against another is to act in a way that treats them differently and usually unfairly.

The process of discriminating against someone based on their physical traits instead of discriminating against them because of their disposition is a very wrong act. This practice is called segregation. According to the learners dictionary.com, segregation is the practice or policy of keeping people of different races, religions, etc., separate from each other. While segregation takes place all around the world, people link the African American Civil Rights Movement to this term.

Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. Prejudice affects a multitude of minority groups and often makes it more difficult for them to get ahead in life. Discrimination is the most critical issue facing many cultures today because it leads to loss of cultural identity and alienation.

For this interview, I chose to speak with one of the Allied Barton security guards working in the Hopkins dormitories. I met her at the start of my freshman year, and we have remained close friends since. For the purposes of this paper, I will call her Shannon. When asked of her race, Shannon responded with, “Black.” However, Shannon later explained that she is half Native American and half black, as both her mother and father have Native American blood. Yet when asked to identify her race, Shannon very strongly felt that she was a black person, stating that others also perceived her to be black. This falls in line with the One Drop Rule, where Shannon’s black identity is perceived more strongly than her Native American one, not only by others

Discrimination comes in many forms. Discrimination and diversity are closely linked considering the reasons behind discrimination are what makes up the definition of diversity. Not only is discrimination made against gender, race, and religion, but it is also made of age, disabilities, appearance and in a lot of cases, women who are pregnant too. This is very much a reality for many employers. There are laws protecting acts of discrimination. This topic is so sensitive, that many employers implement diversity and discrimination into their mission statements. Many companies make it their practice to host training sessions to prevent discrimination from happening, then there are many companies who can’t afford such training for their
