What makes you into a mature adult? This is shown mostly in the novel, The Book of Lost Things, by John Connolly through characterization, although the author uses various literary terms to show that his main character comes of age. David is a depressed flat character in the beginning who eventually has to grow up a lot faster than other kids his age and become a person that sticks up for himself and a dynamic mature character as the book progresses. For example, “ You are brave, and you are both stronger than you look and stronger than you believe yourself to be” (Connolly 234). This quote is an example of David becoming a dynamic character by entering this new world he has only had himself to rely on until he finds some friends or some characters that test him. Roland is telling David that David is much stronger than he believes he is. David doesn’t believe what Roland is saying at first. However, as David becomes more mature and stronger, David believes Roland and develops more confidence. Towards the very end of the novel David is faced with even more conflicts to test his strength and character. For example,“ ‘The name!” shrieked the Crooked Man. “ The name, or I will leave you to the wolves.” ’ (Connolly 321).
