ERM similarities and differences between healthcare organizations and non healthcare organizations. By: Jennifer Bischoff “Enterprise risk management (ERM) is the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the activities of an organization in order to minimize the effects of an organizations capital and earnings.” (ERM2007-2018) There are differences in the way a healthcare organization might use Enterprise risk management compared to a non-healthcare organization. For instance in healthcare a ERM program could help the healthcare leaders focus on better management of patients safety risks as well as business risks and, in turn, it could increase value of the organization. It could help prevent financial loss or could aide that organization in the investment to expand the services offered by the health-care organization. Enterprise risk management is always the decision of the organization making a process to identify and manage uncertainties of the organization. It is very, very clear that without an ERM program in place to help the organization it would be extremely difficult for that particular healthcare organization to make and follow steps to avoid financial disaster’s, especially in today's uncertain market of healthcare. The traditional risk management in healthcare was used to protect hospitals and doctor's from the high rising rate of medical malpractice and professional liability suits in the 1970-1980’s. ERM is more holistic, meaning it takes much more into account that one issue at a time. This also includes patient safety issues and HIPPA
