The 19th century American poet, Edgar Allan Poe, had been plagued by grief from an early age. He was an amazing poet and author who just happened to have a darker story. Many who have studied this prestigious man feel that his works, though magnificent, were extremely dark. Some believe it was nothing more then a fancy for him to spin such gruesome tales. Others feel his work was manipulated by the misfortune of his past. These people have actually found evidence that agrees with this statement. The works of Edgar Allan Poe were inspired by the history and life style of the author. The evidence is evident, when people look back and examine the author, his life, and his writings closely.

Edgar Allan Poe was well known for his dark stories such as, “The Black Cat” and “The Tell Tale Heart.” His stories and poems focused mainly on death and the sinister side of a man’s mind. In general, many of his main characters were not mentally stable or were dealing with alcohol abuse. Poe’s life never seemed to offer him a break, he lived hardships after hardships. Nevertheless, his pain and problems contributed to numerous of his writings and poems. The reader is able to see the connections between his life and the characters. “The Tell Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat” although have many similarities in style, also have many differences.

These disasters help to mold some of the most ominous and intellectually challenging poetry ever written. For the short duration of Poe’s life, he was seen as a literary critic rather than an author. To the modern generation his unbeknown status seems bafflingly inconceivable, considering his now acclaimed publications. Edgar Allan Poe’s writing was very much dictated by his life. Edgar Allan Poe’s life was one of many sorrows and difficulties, filled with deaths of close family and many broken loves. Men disappointed him throughout the entirety of his life, and he saw women as angels that had come to redeem him from the depths of his depression and alcoholism. These occurrences, along with many others, especially those of his childhood, led Poe to become one of the greatest authors of his time. He is called “the father of horror and mystery”, as well as the father of science fiction (Wilson Par. 4).

With a life marred by tragedy at the very young age of three with his parents death, thus leaving him an orphan, his works reveals his darkly passionate sensibilities—a tormented and sometimes neurotic obsession with death and violence and overall appreciation for the beautiful yet tragic mysteries of life. Poe’s creations illustrate a powerful faculty for both the technical and abstract beauty linked with an inveterate inclination toward nocturnal themes.

Edgar Allan Poe was a phenomenal short story author. He now is nationally renowned as a result of his works. He did not just come up with some of these stories on his own accord though, rather he lived some of these stories. Edgar Allan Poe’s literature was greatly influenced by his experiences in life. Edgar Allan Poe was born January 9th ,1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. He experienced death at a very early age. By the time he was three both of his parents were dead. He then got placed with foster parents John and Frances Allan. John Allan was a very wealthy man and sent Edgar to all the best boarding schools. After finishing school Edgar attended the University of Virginia. He was great in school, but unfortunately, he had to leave due to his many gambling debts. He then enlisted in the United States Army under the name Edgar A. Perry, in 1827. He did well in pretty much everything he attempted including the Army. He eventually became sergeant major.

To begin, it is most important to analyze the depressing, dark, and haunted past that followed Poe until his last days, in order to understand his twisted literature. In his earliest beginning, Poe was the
