In a world with so many diverse languages, cultures, media forms, and people, effective communication is critical. The CRS225 Public Advocacy course has augmented and enhanced my knowledge of communication in various ways.
The main component of this course is about how to effectively deliver a message in order to influence decisions in various institutions. Through learning about communication fallacies, I have learned to structure my arguments with no holes so that if I am addressing something that I believe needs to be done, there is no way that the recipient of my message does not understand why I am for it. Effective communication helps to avoid misunderstandings and aides to express one’s desired message.

As a freshman at the University of Maryland, I am pursuing a Masters degree in Computer Science with a specialization in Cyber Security. I formerly attended the Academy of Health Sciences at Prince George’s Community College, a dual enrollment program in which I graduated with my High school diploma and an Associates of Arts degree in General Studies. Having a unique experience by attending these different school has allowed me to become familiar with technical communication in a multitude of ways, whether it is in the work place or school related. Being vice president of the national honor society, being a barista at Peet’s coffee shop, and with being fluent in multiple languages I have used technical communication to encourage people to “take action” in a multitude of ways. Whether it was influencing people to join the national honors society or trying to get customers to buy a new coffee drink, I have consistently been able to encourage others to “take action” with whatever it may be. Over time I have learned the do’s and don’ts of being a technical communicator, and I now understand what must be done to accomplish a task through technical communication.
As soon as this course started, I realized that there was a lot for me to learn. I communicate with many individuals at work and in my personal life. I have always felt that my communications were clearly received. However, I realized that each receiver of my communication is different. Joseph A. Devito explains that each person is unique; each person’s communications are unique (Devito 9). When at work I deal with many employees concerning various matters. The employees typically come to me because they need help with a matter that I am knowledgeable in. I can usually answer their questions quickly, and with great detail. The part I fail to consider is that the employee is not as knowledgeable as me, and may not understand some of the terms and processes I am referring to. And for fear of appearing to not understand, an employee will just agree with me and leave. That employee may leave my office not fully understanding everything I said. This miscommunication is
