Reflection is a vital key for effective communication with patients and their families. The main claim to this paper, is to prove, to have effective communication with patients and their families, firstly, one must know oneself. Communication is a two-way street Yes...but for effective communication to be understood, one must acknowledge oneself first, Communication starts with ourselves. we need to address that we, too, are human beings, with our own thoughts, feelings, beliefs, attitudes, prejudices and preferences. There is an increase in the healthcare profession that we must care for ourselves before caring for others (Burnard,2001). (Older reference but very supportive towards this paper). The quality of communication is a critical factor in meeting the needs of individuals, families and communities, (Crisp & Taylor 2009). Communication is an expressions of ones thoughts...To convey what one person is trying to say to another. When communicating there is a messenger and a receiver but sometimes due to the way the message is delivered there maybe misunderstandings, and confusion arises and the message maybe misunderstood. Be clear and precise in what you're trying to say and why, (Crisp & Taylor 2009). Body language has a great deal to do with communication and it is believed that body language is the greatest form of all communication skills because it is hard to control and therefore, maybe even more acknowledged that the spoken word, (Crisp & Taylor 2009). From birth, body language is the basic skill and the only way a baby has to communicate, as a teenager spoken words are often mixed with bad reactions but again their body language is without doubt the best way of understanding our confused teens, Adulthood is often confronting, their peers may use prominent words, which to the receiver may be complicated, and hard to follow the meaning of. Lastly the elderly they tend to go back to the basics, using more useful and simpler language, possibly laymen terms, if
They say a picture paints a thousand words, and the same can be said for Body language. Body language definitely plays a big role in influencing communication, by observing body language alone it makes it easy for you toidentify whether somebody shows interest or puts value in what you are saying. It also allows you to make pre judgements about an individual. For instance an audience or an individual can perceive a speaker/someone as arrogant based on the body language he makes and not the content. Making body language a priority for effective communication.
This is essay is going to be based on the importance of communication within the broader context of health and social care, it will give you a definitive insight to different communication techniques, such as verbal and non-verbal communication. Within this essay I will also discuss how important effective communication can be and the barriers that can restrict the care practitioner from doing his/her job effectively by using communication as the main tool. Furthermore how personal beliefs and values need to be taken in to consideration and the effect it may have on a service user in the light of working professionally.
Joe Navarro, a former FBI counterintelligence agent and an expert on nonverbal communications and body language, asserts in his essay “Every Body’s Talking” that the body sends messages that are more effective as the words we say, interlocutors react unconsciously to mutual non-verbal messages, and don't realize that they communicate a lot of information without their knowledge. Although Navarro cleverly claims that a disagreement between two interlocutors can occur while the verbal message (words) is positive, and that non-verbal communication and body language add an extra dimension to the message, sometimes in contradiction with it, he fails to consider the cultural aspect. Different postures and gestures have different meanings in different cultures. This can be a drawback to use non-verbal communication. Insufficient samples also weaken this argument. In fact, people observed by Navarro cannot represent the entire globe’s population. The argument I have against his statement is that it is erroneous to claim that no one can keep a secret since if the lips are silent, the body is speaking.
According to Schwartz (2001), communication can be said to be the process that involves the sending and receipt of messages of information among individuals. The communication process consists of two things. It involves the sending and receipt of a message. The message sent and received can be classified into two broad categories. These categories include non-verbal and verbal messages.
Communication involves the exchange of messages and is a process which all individuals participate in. Whether it is through spoken word, written word, non-verbal means or even silence, messages are constantly being exchanged between individuals or groups of people (Bach & Grant 2009). All behaviour has a message and communication is a process which individuals cannot avoid being involved with (Ellis et al 1995).
you can rephrase what you just said and check with person that they have understood
Communication means people are able to send signals to each other. It is there so
Communication is all types of communicate with each other .We can communicate by speaking, there are several languages, we can send messages, written, letters, magazines ,and books. To people who can not speak, have nonverbal communication, messages, eye contact, body language .
Children develop communication skills from birth. They rely on speech, language and communication to be able to learn at school and play with their friends. They need these skills to reach their full potential. Children begin to understand words before they can say them. They then learn how to say these words and how to put them together to make sentences. Some develop quickly,
How we communicate effects everything we do. Whether talking to patients and family members, speaking in a team meeting, or talking with our children’s teacher at a conference, communication is how we learn information, teach information and express our concerns. With this paper I will discuss; the definitions of healthcare communication, the relevancy of effective personal healthcare communication with other healthcare professionals, clients, and patients, the relevancy of effective professional healthcare
They say that a picture is worth a hundred words; this is because everywhere we look we will discover something new. When we look at someone what do we first try to analyze? Their facial expression, eye contact, speech, tone of voice, posture, leg, arm and hand position? The line between what someone says and our understanding of his or her words comes from non-verbal communication, also known as ‘body language’. If we hone and develop our awareness of ones body language then we can, more effectively, communicate with one another or even attempt to emulate our own body language and send false signals to the other
One of the characteristics that could arguably be one of the most important is that intercommunication is used among members of the discourse community (321). A group of people can have a common set of goals, but if there is no intercommunication among the group then it can not be considered a discourse community. When you hear the word communication, speaking or writing are the two forms of communication that usually come to mind, but these are not the only ways in which we can effectively communicate. Body language is one of the types of communication that people often overlook and do not realize how effective it can be when communicating with others. Ahmet Benzer brings to our attention that, “ body language is a comprehension and communication tool via physical movements and changes that show a person's feelings, thoughts, and attitudes about other persons and thing” (467). When we realize that people use body language to communicate and express feelings, a whole new level of communication
Communication plays a major part in our everyday life, if we did not communicate with each other we could not learn, develop relationships or even progress and it is very important to make sure that the best provision is created for all. Different methods can be used as a way of communicating but the way we express it can have
It is difficult enough to interpret words accurately, in fact, there are no doubt more misinterpreted messages than not (Cherney and Tynan, 1990). When the element of nonverbal is incorporated, the rate of misinterpretations increases dramatically (Elgin, 1980).
Body language is a form of nonverbal communication that allows individuals to communicate their personal feelings, emotions, attitudes and thoughts through body movements. (Rane, 2010, p.17) The interpretation of body language differs across cultures and gender, which can lead to miscommunication within an
