Being an Emergency Room nurse for 7 years and working as a traveling nurse in many different parts of the country has impacted my future and decision of going back to school. My personal career goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with specialization in pediatric critical care area, mainly pediatric emergency medicine. It's a fundamental belief of mine that each one of us is brought upon this world with a major definite purpose in life. Everyone has a unique destiny for contributing to this world using their unique blend of talents and passions. I have no doubt that most people today work hard and stay busy with daily activities. The problem I've noticed is that many people live their lives without any sense of meaningful purpose that gives their lives passion and significance. They get caught up in the daily mechanical routines of life and they become creatures of habit rather than purpose-driven beings. As I prepare for graduation from high school and pursue my goal of becoming a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree with a specialization in trauma care. I am an Emergency Department nurse whose goal is to care for patients as a Family Nurse Practitioner. As they say, there is no such thing as a free lunch. This ideal holds true for anyone interested in attaining career success or achieving a major goal. One of such career goals is evident in becoming a Registered Nurse. There are about 154,000 Registered Nurses in the state of Ohio (KFF, 2016) Nurses represent the highest proportion of all working professionals in the United States (KFF, 2016). There are about 3 million Registered Nurses in this country and the number continues to increase as baby-boomers retire, while hospitals, clinics, health centers continue to seek nurses that will provide various forms of specialized care (KFF, 2016). Due to this phenomenon, nursing education is made very arduous for anyone interested in pursuing this field of study (AACN, 2016). The American Association of Colleges of Nurses in Ohio attributes the arduous nature of the field of study to the increasing demand as well as transformation of the healthcare services (AACN, 2016). The signing of the new Healthcare law has led to transformative changes in many ways, by influencing ways in which healthcare is provided such as preventative care and also increasing the number of insured, which increases overall services rendered (AACN, 2016).

Though the field of nursing is currently mixed with Associate and Bachelor prepared nurses, the Associate prepared nursing role was originally created in response to the need of nurses to fill a shortage created by WWII. Associate degree nurses were trained in a shorter period of time than a traditional professional nurse, in the skills of nursing in order to perform bedside care during the nursing shortage. (Berman & Snyder, 2012, pp.10-11) The Associate program was intended to be short-term solution to the immediate problem, ending with the shortage. Becoming a family nurse practitioner is my dream and my long term goal is to achieve this title and practice with it. I will be able to give back to several rural and urban communities by providing patients with quality care as a passionate family nurse practitioner. My ultimate goal after gaining immense clinical experience during my practice as a nurse practitioner is to give back to this amazing profession by transitioning to the position of a family nurse practitioner educator. The primary nurse practitioner program at South University will provide the advanced level of education I need to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to provide high quality, evidence-based patient care and ultimately impact the health of the entire population through patient education and outreach in multiple heath care settings.

The research concluded that in order to meet the needs of a complex patient demographic the number of Bachelor’s prepared nurses needs to be increased by 80% by 2020. This is a necessary move to develop more highly-educated nurses and ensure that nursing workforce is able to handle an expanded set of competencies. The focus on nursing education should be a life long journey that supports and encourages those who seek higher degree programs. The burden of student debt is one barrier in need of being addressed in order for more nurses to pursue their education further. In order to alleviate this burden and open the door for nurses to further their education, more federal grants and scholarships must be made available. In addition to the changes needed in funding, schools need to increase the capacity of their healthcare programs to accommodate all returning students. The importance of the foundation’s research is overwhelming, once these recommendations are implemented nurses will have greater support in every area. I have had the distinct privilege and honor of practicing the art of nursing since 2000. Throughout this time, I have seen the profession evolve through technology, practice and theory. With the recent and constant change created by the healthcare reform, today’s nurse must realize that learning is a lifelong process that does not end upon graduation. The nurse is never done learning, especially as technology and medical knowledge are constantly evolving. My most recent endeavor has been the pursuit of my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing at Western Carolina University. This education has broadened my mind to the opportunities nursing has to offer and has enriched my personal and professional goals.

Ever since I began nursing school in 2012 at the University of Texas At El Paso Texas, I dreamt of furthering my education to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.
