Environmental issues Abstract Obesity is a medical condition in which the person has excess body fat. Obesity affects over one-third people around the world; this includes children under the age of five. Obesity can be defined by body mass index or BMI. The BMI is the percentage body fat and total body fat. A BMI in the range of 18.5 – 24.9 is considered a healthy weight. A BMI that is above 25.0 – 29.9 is considered overweight. A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. Children’s healthy weight varies on age and sex. It is not an absolute number. Obesity causes many deaths every year. In the United States it is estimated that over 300,000 people die every year. In Europe over one million deaths every year. It also accounts for many obesity-related conditions including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, some cancers and many other conditions. Obesity does affect some groups more than others like middle age adults and blacks. Obesity occurs over time from eating more calories than you use. Genetics also play a role in obesity, with the help of environmental factors. Polymorphisms in various genes that controls appetite and metabolism are predispose to obesity. Children are predisposing to obesity if the parents are. Family influences can cause obesity. How the family is cooking to buying fresh or processed foods. A person’s work schedule can cause obesity. An erratic work times completely interrupts cycles of activities. People remain awake the whole night and then they
Obesity is when a person has excess body fat. It is calculated by dividing one’s weight by his or her height to get the body mass index (BMI=kg/m^2). This number is also used to screen for health problems that maybe be caused by certain weight categories. A BMI of 25-29.9 is considered to be overweight and over thirty is considered obese. A third of children are overweight (CDC, 2014). Obesity leads to significant physical and mental health consequences. Obese children are at risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, type two diabetes, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease and hypertension (CDC, 2014).
Obesity is defined as defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Obesity is not only based on an individual’s weight but also their BMI. A BMI greater than or equal to 25 is overweight. A BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity ((Organization, 2013). Obesity is the most common preventable deaths and the fifths leading health risk globally. Obesity has also been linked to other debilitating diseases and can increase a person’s chances of being hospitalized. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death (cdc.gov, 2014).
Being obese or overweight can cause an abundance of problems throughout a persons daily life. For example, getting out of bed or even out of a chair could be a struggle for people that are overweight. Obesity doesn’t always start when you’re a child. In America, more than 2 in 3 adults were considered to be overweight or have obesity (Meyer). Obesity is something that can control your life. If you’re overweight or are obese you have a higher chance at risking your health. For example, you could obtain type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, and more. A medical study found that obesity is associated with 162,000 deaths each year (Meyer). Being overweight can give you a higher risk of undergoing a stroke and a heart attack. The body mass index (BMI) is another way to tell if you’re at normal weight, are overweight, or have obesity. Normal weight is a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9, overweight is a BMI of 25 to 25.9, and obesity is a BMI of 30 or higher (Meyer). They measure this by how much you weigh and your height. Obesity shortens life by six to seven years. This disease is more than likely to exceed smoking as one of the nations deadliest health
Obesity is a buildup of fat in your body. Obesity is measured and defined by body mass index or BMI. As an adult the BMI should be around 22-25 to be in a healthy range (European Association for the Study of Obesity 2013). If the BMI reading number is over 30 you are considered to be obese. As your BMI increases it can be classified as severe, morbid, or super obesity.
Childhood obesity is a serious problem that puts children at high risk of developing other related health issues. Obesity can lead to cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, sleep disorders, low self-steam, negative body image, and depression.
“More than one third of adults and 17% of youth in the United States are obese.” (Carroll et al, 2014) The JAMA study reported that 31.8% of young people were overweight or obese. (Carroll et al, 2014) According to the map from the CDC, the most concentrated region of obesity is in the South. (CDC, September 2014) With the rise of obesity come questions as to why Americans are so unhealthy. What exactly classifies a person as obese? A person is considered obese when they attain a body mass index of 30 to 40. (CNN, 2014) Now that the classification of a person being obese is known, how did they get there? According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, “A lack of energy balance most often causes overweight and obesity. Energy
Obesity is an issue that occurs more often in society today, and to be obese means that an individual has too much body fat which comes from factors in example as muscle, bone, fat, and their body water. Obesity occurs over a period where an individual consumes more calories than they use throughout a day. Factors that may lead to obesity can include the person’s weight, their genetic composition, overeating, eating foods high in fats, and not being physically active throughout that period. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is still used to estimate the body fat of someone over the 20% threshold of average fatness, and anyone over that threshold would be declared obese according to the BMI. With the BMI being measure from average weights and the
Americans have been suffering from obesity from many years and there are many contributing factors linked to obesity. As I previously mentioned, obesity can occur at any age, even in young children. As you age, hormonal changes and a less active lifestyle increase your risk of obesity. Genetics play a role in how efficiently your body converts food into energy and how your body burns calories during exercise. If obesity runs in your family your risk of being obese
More than one-third (34.9%) (The State of Obesity) of the American population is overweight. The definition for obesity is the condition of being grossly fat or overweight. Obesity can happen for many reasons, including age, gender, hereditary obesity, stereotype obesity, and fast food restaurants and their marketing. For example, a 50-year-old man can add pounds faster than a 5-year-old child can because of his age. Obesity is a growing problem that society needs to deal with.
The body mass index is the measure used to define obesity. In adults BMI between 25 and 29 is overweight and BMI of 30 and higher is obese. In children with the BMI changes with age and gender.” The center for disease control defines a child whose Body Mass Index is between the 85th and 95th percentile for age (meaning that 85-95% of his or her peers have equal or lower BMI) as being at risk for obesity” A child that has a body mass index of 95 or higher is consider obese. Obesity increases one’s risk of developing conditions such as high blood pressure type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gall Bladder disease, and breast cancer. The tendency toward obesity is fostered by our environment the lack of physical activities with high calorie, and lost cost foods.
There are many reasons for obesity, the first main reason is consumption of energy. People have taken more energy but used less energy in daily life, also few physical
Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2. It is a rising epidemic due to many factors including genetics, lifestyle and other hormonal/medical issues. According to the World Health Organization, worldwide there are about 500 million obese adults and 42 million obese children. In the United States, 35 percent of adults (roughly 100 million people) and 17 percent of children are obese.
Obesity, a top problem for public health, is a global epidemic that kills no less than 2.8 million people every year. Obesity is a significant factor for many diseases which include Type 2 diabetes, some cancers and cardiovascular diseases. Many at times, being overweight is mistaken for being obese. Being overweight or obese means having abnormal or excessive fat accumulations respectively that could have negative health effects. BMI, body mass index, was introduced to calculate underweight, overweight or obese people as it correlates with the amount of body fat in an individual. Adults are considered obese if they have a BMI of 30 or higher. A number of factors are said to contribute to this epidemic in adults.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in the year 2014, 39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight which amounts to a total of 1.9 billion adults. Of these, 600 million people were considered obese. WHO describes obesity as an excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that may result in impaired health. Body Mass Index (BMI) is used as an index to classify obesity. To calculate the BMI, an individuals weight in kilograms is divided by their height in meters squared. A BMI greater than 25 is considered overweight and a BMI greater than 30 is considered obese. Obesity can lead to many health risks such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, strokes and even certain cancers (WHO, 2016).
Obesity is a condition in which a person has accumulated so much body fat that it might have a negative effect on their health. If a person’s body weight is at least 20 percent higher than it should be, he or she is considered obese. If an individual’s Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 25 and 29.9, the individual is considered overweight. If one’s BMI is 30 and over the person is considered obese. The Body Mass Index is a statistical measurement derived from your height and weight. Body Mass Index does not measure the percentage of body fat.
