Outsiders: Misjudged or Misunderstood? What does being outsider mean? Does it mean being left out of being different? People have often felt like an outsider at one point in their life, and wonder why. Are outsiders misjudged or misunderstood? These two terms meet at a crossroads, and are commonly misinterpreted. Misjudging someone is when you make a solid assumption or conclusion about them, whether it be on their looks our how they act. Being misunderstood is when someone interprets you for someone you are not. Based on both of these definitions, outsiders are simply misjudged. We can see examples of outsiders being misjudged both in literature and in modern day society. “The Metamorphosis”, a short story written by Franz Kafka, tells …show more content…

Jordan, who was unarmed, was sitting in the front passenger’s seat, with four other unarmed teens, including Jordan’s brother, in the car. Roy Oliver shot at the car with a rifle. A bullet broke through the front passenger’s window and hit Jordan. Shortly after, he was rushed to a hospital, where he died from gunshot injuries. This story is one of many that has happened just in 2017. A total of 6 million african americans were killed by police officers in the year 2016. One possible explanation for the racial disparities is that police tend to patrol high-crime neighborhoods, which are disproportionately black. That means they are going to be generally more likely to initiate a policing action, from traffic stops to more serious arrests, against a black person who lives in these areas. This goes to show how misjudged most of modern day society is. More and more people are judged on their appearance or in this situation, where they live. However, one could argue that outsiders are just misunderstood. For example, referring back to the last paragraph, the african american culture is misunderstood because of a stereotype they have always had hanging over their shoulders. Or even back to “The Metamorphosis”, Gregor was misunderstood because his family at first became blind and relied on Gregor for the support of Welfare, but they soon realized that Gregor was the happiness of the family. Outsiders could also be misunderstood because some people chose to be outsiders
