An outsider is someone who is not accepted or is isolated from society. ‘Of Mice and Men’ is set in the 1930’s, where society considered many people as outsiders. During this period, many people were racist, sexist and prejudice towards disabled people. This is shown with several characters in the novel including Crooks, Curly’s wife and Candy who are all considered as outsiders in this novel, since they each had something that the society at that time were prejudice towards.

An outsider is a person who is rejected by others due to being unusual or peculiar. Often that people who are outcast are ostracized and shunned. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is a novel about how young boys unattended on an island become savage and corrupt as they try to get back home. The novel explores the details of Piggy, one of the major characters, who is very different from the rest of the boys. Annoying and whiny, he is eventually ostracized by most of the other boys who think he is an unnecessary burden to their survival. Piggy is often bullied and made fun of for his obese body and intelligence. There are an abundance of adjectives that can be used to describe Piggy, but the one word that fits Piggy the most is outsider.

There is a bountiful number of outsiders in our society and we are wondering, why are they outsiders and what have they done to become that, what defines them? Outsiders in our society are simply misunderstood and people do not understand them, hence them being outsiders. The reasons that seem to make outsiders misunderstood is that they do not like or do the popular stuff at the time. Also, those who are outsiders are seen as people that are “different,” but really are misunderstood. Outsiders are just misunderstood in society and not purposely being pushed out.

Are outsiders simply those who are misjudged or misunderstood? Whether outsiders are misjudged or misunderstood depends on whose perspective you view this question from. When you look at someone you are developing an opinion of them, and you may be misjudging them by deciding they are an outsider. While when you are the person being judged you feel that you are just simply misunderstood. You may have experienced one or probably both of these perspectives. Moreover to truly understand what it means to be an outsider you need to understand both of these perspectives.

Everyone is different in terms of appearance and life circumstances, so feeling like an outsider is bound to happen at least once during one’s life. Nowadays our society feels that if you aren’t up to people’s expectations, you are known to be an “outsider”. Being an outsider is universal because not everyone is social, not everyone can afford nice things and not everyone is popular.

An outsider is someone who stands out from the crowd. They have their own beliefs, their own way or thinking. Standing out is often thought of in a negative way, but it can bring along many positive things. During the time period of Martin Luther King Jr., there were many protestors who began to stand up for themselves and their race. Even though many people did it, there were only a few people who started the movement, and those people, were outsiders. Two people who were outsiders from that time period were Jackie Robinson and Rosa Parks. They stood against normal beliefs and tried to change the way of life, which is what many outsiders do. An outsider is not simply someone who is misjudged or misunderstood.

Being an outsider is considered to be someone who is isolated and disconnected from others. This isolation can result in many tragic outcomes, one being depression and in other cases even worse. Carson, I agree with you, but I think an outsder is more than that. Being an outsider can mean that nobody accepts them. They are not only left out but are not noticed. Some might consider outsiders strange or unusual, But outsiders can bring a much need change in society. Outsiders have never got the respect they deserve, they haven't been treat the same because of skin color or their personalities.
