Magical realism combines two seemingly contrasting elements reality and fantasy. Julio cortazar’s “House taken over” is a good example of magical realism because the house is being taken over by supernatural activity or Natzis. For instance, Cortazar describes the house being old and spacious, “ it kept the memories of great grandparents, our parents and the whole of childhood.”(pg. 37). This is a good example of magical realism because the family seems normal, they’re living in a home where past ancestors also used to live and the house is full of childhood memories. The “Fall of the house of usher” is classified as Gothic literature due to its dark theming as well as its macabre atmosphere , While very similar to “The Fall of the House of Usher” , “House taken Over” is not classified as gothic literature it is classified as Magical realism due to its more magical senses as well as mystery behind the unknown forces that are taking over the house.

“Fear is not real. It is the product of thoughts you create. Danger is very real, but fear is only a choice.” Fear is not something that is always real, such as when Usher was scared but there was nothing to fear yet, but the danger at the end of the story, especially for Ushers friend, was something to fear for. In the Gothic Literature short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe, the setting is somber and creates an illusion of darkness. On the other hand, “House Taken Over” by Julio Cortazar, portrays the idea of magical realism in, which setting is more realistic and less gloomy. Although Gothic Literature and Magical Realism are similar, there are also many differences, especially in their settings.

Edgar Allan Poe and Joyce Carol Oates are one of the best writers to ever write. They both wrote about gothic literature but had a very different point of view on gothic literature. “The Fall of House of Usher” and “Where is here?” are both examples of Gothic literature, they are different because of their use of setting and the violence. The main characters in “The Fall of House of Usher” are Roderick Usher, Madeline, and The Narrator. In “Where is here?” the main characters were Stranger, Mother, Father, and Son.

A wise man once said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” For instance, the Union being divided into two, slave and free, would not hold the country together in the long run. Known as an American author, historian, and professor, Bruce Levine received his Bachelors of Arts at the University of Michigan in 1971. He received his Masters of Arts and his PhD at the University of Rochester in 1973 and 1980. Bruce Levine has won awards such as the Distinguished Lecturer, Organization of American Historians, 2004-2007, 2010-2013, the Peter Seaborg Award for Civil War Scholarship, 2007, and the Excellence in Teaching Award at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1998-99.

Poe used Grotesque, Guilt, and setting in his Gothic Lit. writings. The stories that Poe has written all these years are some of the most known stories. mainly because of how Poe describes as, and explains, the story so well it practically feels like you’re there inside the story or poem. Poe’s stories have many gothic techniques in them, but in the stories, The House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, and the Black Cat he uses three large gothic techniques that really make these stories what they are and really come alive.

Magical realism is the seamless encounter of fantastical or magical occurrences in a work within the real. “House Taken Over,” is a short story by Julio Cortazar. It is about a brother and a sister who live in a large home that has been passed down through generations of their family. Many peculiar things happen throughout the story that could never happen in real life. Magical realism is shown through the actions of the brother and sister, through the house, and ‘they’.

An example from the story, “I had to shut the door to the passage. They’ve taken over the back part” (94). This sentence proves its magical realism because the brother does not say who “they” really are. Therefore, “House Taken Over” is example of Magical Realism since no one really knows who invaded: it could be the government, possibly a Nazi, or even a ghost, but no one really ever knows.

Gothicism in literature is something that forces you to think beyond the preternatural line between the supernatural and natural. Gothicism exposes the unspoken and deliberately forgotten, using dark language in what we are uncomfortable discussing. The two pieces of American literature Ligeia and The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe are great examples of gothic literature. As a Gothic writer, Poe uses specific words and events which exhibit gothicism in these two texts by haunting, usually unspoken, and dark themes which are characteristic

Gothic literary traditions began in the middle ages and were used to evoke the reader’s emotions of fear and suspense. The elements within the stories were heavily described to add to the author’s tone and mood of the reader. Edgar Allan Poe is a well known author in Gothic literature, one of his pieces “The Fall of the House of Usher” is a Gothic short story that features a grim tone using Gothic elements to draw the attention of the readers. The intentions of Gothic authors were to give the readers a look into the dark side of the time in which the book is written. Poe uses a grim tone throughout “The Fall of the House of Usher” and expresses it through the setting of the story and the imagery he uses.

In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” Poe incorporates some elements of gothic fiction. He uses high and excessive emotion throughout the narration of the story. He also uses an atmosphere of mystery and suspense to keep the reader engaged. In the short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” Poe uses a gothic atmosphere to set the mood of the story. He also uses The Castle element of gothic fiction by portraying a huge haunted mansion.

Imagine someone is walking down the street and they walk by a nine foot tall man but pay no attention to him and act as if this is a normal occurrence. That is magical realism when the magical and mundane are interwoven so seamlessly that the magical becomes the mundane. There are three main elements to magical realism which are that it is one set in an otherwise ordinary world, two the magical and the ordinary are put together so well it makes the magical seem normal and third the story bears the influences of oral tradition.

Looking around the yard, Ken noticed some new flower beds, and said, “My friend, don’t forget, that Smokey and I came down the sidewalk for several months without any problems.
