In the same way, dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that the characters do not, which causes the reader to fear or dread what they suspect will happen. The first indication of dramatic irony is in “Masque of the Red Death” when the black room with the blood red windows is described. This description creates a bad feeling about the room and the reader senses something bad will happen in that room. This idea is proven later when the Prince dies in that room. Another example of dramatic irony is demonstrated in “Terrible Things” when Bunting writes “‘We have come for any creature that is white,” the Terrible Things thundered. “There are no white creatures here but us”’(Bunting, Three). It makes readers ask what will happen next and puts characters on edge. In “Terrible Things” an example of anticipation is when the Terrible Things say “We have come for you”(Bunting, Three). This sentence makes the rabbits fear for fir their lives. It also causes the reader to be scared for what will happen to the rabbits. Another example of anticipation is in the story “The Lottery” throughout the text the reader is not aware of what will happen to whoever wins the lottery. This detail sets the reader on edge and makes them wonder what will happen. This also adds to the horror of the show of cruelty that happens at the end of the story. One more notable example of anticipation is shown in “Masque of the Red Death” when the masked figure appears at the ball. This detail creates anticipation because it is setting the the characters on edge and they whisper among themselves nervously. This also scares the reader because it causes fear that the figure is going to harm the other characters. One final detail that portrays anticipation is in “Contents of a Dead Man’s Pocket” Finney writes …show more content…

This alarms the readers and causes one to dread what will happen to the rabbits. One more example of how dramatic irony builds suspense in stories is in “The Lottery” when Tessie says “‘I think we ought to start over” Mrs. Hutchinson said… I tell you it wasn't fair… you didn't give him enough time. Everybody saw that’” (Jackson, Four). This quotation is a good example of dramatic irony because when Tessie started causing a scene the reader begins to suspect that she will be the one who is chosen. This is significant because her pleading adds to the audience's fear of not knowing what will happen to the person who is
Dramatic irony is the type of irony that informs the reader of a certain fact that one or more characters in the story may not know. This is quite evident in Young Goodman Brown and A Cask of Amontillado, because of the lack of knowledge that the
Irony is a very big part of a story, because it can create new elements in a story. Some of these elements may include humor and theme. "The Ransom of Red Chief" is a great example for this.
Irony, a key element to a tragic play like Macbeth, has the ability to make the tragic hero appear more villainous or the down-fall seem even more tragic.
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a tragic story about two lovers who are from two disputing families, and their eventual suicides. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony throughout the play to create tension for the audience and foreshadow the ending. Dramatic irony is when the words or actions of characters in a story have a different meaning to the reader than to the characters. This is because the reader knows something that the characters do not. Romeo and Juliet’s death could have been prevented if the characters in the story weren’t so ignorant of their situations, and often times the reader recognizes this.
Irony is a useful device for giving stories many unexpected twists and turns. In Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," irony is used as an effective literary device. Situational irony is used to show the reader that what is expected to happen sometimes doesn't. Dramatic irony is used to clue the reader in on something that is happening that the characters in the story do not know about. Irony is used throughout Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" through the use of situational irony and the use of dramatic irony.
An example of dramatic irony is when Fortunato tells Montresor not to worry about his health and that “the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I will not die of a cough” (POE 238) Montresor then replies, “True–true.” When the reader reads this, they see that Fortunato is clueless of Montresor’s true plan is and while he tells Fortunato he will be all right. That he will not die, he is planning to kill him. This is dramatic because we as the reader feel a sense of sorrow because we know the truth about what will
The examples of irony were used to convey Montresor’s wrongdoing but also undermining his seek for retribution. Poe used dramatic, situational, and verbal irony to create images and meaning into readers mind. He helped create meaning through the story by helping us know more about what was happening than the characters by seeing their other sides and their dreams and passions. By using these three types of irony, it helped make the story more interesting and helped the readers see things in different perspectives. For example, in dramatic irony it creates suspense and foreshadowing for the readers. It also relates to a story or situation that the reader may be familiar with or that they will understand in a much better way. Basically, irony causes the readers to expect the unexpected, and shocks the readers and makes the plot more gripping and

In the short story “Masque of the Red Death”, written by Edgar Allan Poe, it symbolizes irony numerous times throughout the story. One of the often examples of irony is described when the story entails Prince Prospero name as a wealthy prince but ends up dying to the horrifying, twisted, red death, “There was a sharp cry. Fell prostrate in death the Prince Prospero”(178). This is especially ironic because his name appears to represents a prince of extraordinary fortunate. Therefore this infers he would have the “the best of luck” but dies due to the horrible plague. While his name is ironic, the rich, noble people at the party also believe that they can elude death but ultimately lead to their demise. In the short story, everyone dies to the
Including irony/ dramatic irony is one way Roald Dahl created the element of suspense in his story. Dramatic irony relies on having the reader gaining or having missing information. An example from the story is the fact that the readers know that Mary is the killer in this story. The fact that the readers know that Mary is the killer of her husband really gives you this feeling of suspense on what can happen next. Dramatic irony is also that the readers know an object or a weapon of some sort is used by one character that the other characters don't know about. The weapon Mary is the killer of her husband Patrick with is a fairly large lamb chop. Mary wanted to smack her husband as soon as he leaves the house, but in fact killed him. She went to make dinner anyways. This would be considered dramatic irony because the readers know the weapon, but the police don't know.
In dramatic Irony, occurs when the readers are aware about what is going to happen, but the characters do not have any clue about what is going on. In “The Black Cat”, the story begins with the main character sentenced to death, but with one story to tell. The Irony here is that he was not aware about how his life was going to change. In the beginning he is describing how happy was his childhood and how much he loved his pets. In the second paragraph of the story the main character describes his personality as a child in the first sentence “From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition. My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions” (3). He was a lovely child with an uncertain future. Another irony finds it on the story is how he describes the fidelity and love that the man can own “There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere Man” (3-4). When the story is progressing he is transforming to a violent man without any act of compassion towards his faithful pet, which actually represented faithfulness. He is represented himself as a child with a lovely personality, but he is not aware that the lovely child was going to transform in an alcoholic man with a violent personality willing to kill mercilessly.
Authors use irony in literature in order to give double meanings and make it more interesting to the reader. In the play “ The Death of a Salesman” Arthur Miller uses irony as a strong writing technique in order to express the character's behavior. In “The Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller moments of situational and dramatic irony helps to illustrate the story's theme in which Willy is a man trying yo achieve the American dream, however he have created a world of illusion.
-Dramatic Irony is when the words and actions of the characters in a work of literature are known to the audience or reader, but they are not known to certain characters in the story. The reader or audience has a greater knowledge of many of the characters themselves.
A reoccurring theme in the play Macbeth is the use of ironic events. Irony is an unexpected occurrence that takes the audience by surprise and generally means the opposite of what is expected. These contradictory events enhance the plot of a story and create suspense. Irony is portrayed multiple times in this play and is known for making the play so amusing. Unexpected incidents throughout the plot occur in scenes involving the witches’ prophecies, Macbeth’s crimes committed to become king, and the back-and-forth changes in the mindset of Lady Macbeth.
The dramatic irony is also a piece of iconography where the spectators know about a situation that the characters are unaware of. In drama films, dramatic irony is important because it helps the audience understand the plot or the emotional development of the character (Fotheringham, 2014). For instance, we as audience know
