Athletes in America are known to be some of the highest paid athletes in the world. Multi-million dollar contracts and extreme amounts of money. They play extreme amounts of games and get paid what the general public would think to be a lot. In reality, they don’t get paid enough. In The Cauldron article, Leland Faust try’s to persuade the audience about athletes paychecks. He effectively uses ethos, pathos, and logos in order to persuade the audience into believing athletes should be paid more.

As Meredith Grey, my fictional idol from Grey’s anatomy would say, “Progress looks like a bunch of failures”. A main focus of this semester was learning our audience, and convincing people of things through writing and or visuals using ethos pathos and or logos. I did not see the connections of any of my papers from the first to second semester at first. But my memoir from the first semester and my campaign project from this semester both use pathos, emotion. For me it was easiest to write about the pathos, but the ethos and logos part was out of my reach. Using different techniques, authors make themselves more believable and are able to connect more with readers in order to convince them of their argument. Rhetoric involves consideration of the speaker, the audience, and the subject. The speaker uses the aspects of the rhetoric triangle to connect with the audience and agree with them about the subject. The rhetorical triangle includes the elements of ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is proving the speaker’s credibility, logos uses logic, and emotion is labeled as pathos. By using these strategies in writing, authors are able to achieve their purpose. Ethos is used to build your credibility and establish why the reader should listen to you. This leads validity to your claim because you will be seen as a credible source. In the music video, many rhetorical strategies were used to enhance the experience of the audience. For example, one scene in the video introduced the protagonist –Mika, who is a high school kid that gets bullied by his classmates. Aristotle’s three forms of proof are ethos, pathos, and logos. Aristotle created these three forms of proof to strengthen persuasion and provide rhetorical principles that allow for stronger analyzation of arguments. Ethos focuses on the “personal character” of the speaker attempting to establishing the means of persuasion. This proof aims attempts to analyze the actual credibility of the speaker. The credibility of this speaker can be formed through previous experience or the messaging techniques that create the reasons as to why the audience should trust this person on a proposed topic.

Ethos is used to establish moral character of the speaker, logos is used to present a sound argument to an audience with facts and figures, and pathos is used to persuade an audience with high emotions. Pathos helps reduce an audience’s ability to judge a situation by using figurative speech. It evokes the emotional side of a person, whether it be with pity or with fear or, in this case, sorrow.
