Darnay was going to die, therefore Carton disguised himself to Darnay so that Darnay will not have to die, causing Lucie to be sad. Carton did not want to see Lucie sad, this is why he sacrificed himself for Darnay and Lucie. “ I see that I hold a sanctuary in their hearts, and in the hearts of their descendants, generations hence. I see her, an old women, weeping for me on the anniversary of this day. I see her and her husband , their course done, lying side in their last earthly bed, and I know that each was not more honored and held sacred in the other soul, than was in the souls of both” (Dickens 372). Life is full of boundless possibilities, but in order to transform a possibility into a reality we have to choose -- giving up the many in order to attain the one. Sacrifice is the ability to protect others for their sake. not yours. It has flaws if you think selfishly; It has no flaws if you think selflessly. Cyrano de Bergerac, written by Edmond Rostand, takes place in Paris, France. Cyrano loves Roxane but feels he is too ugly to woo her. For instance, Ana Rosa was willing to surrender writing because of Guarios death. “I promise I won’t write another word it was the only punishment.”(p.129). I think the author is trying to show how much grief Ana Rosa has at that time, because in the end Ana Rosa realized she could write it down, instead giving up her dream. To continue, another huge example of sacrifice that defines this whole essay, is when Guario gave up his life for, his sister, his family, and for what he believes in. Even at the very moment he died, he smiled and was happy because he was in a way satisfied with his choice. “Guario fell at the bottom of my gri gri tree, and my handsome, brave brother smiled at me.”(p.125). This demonstrates, great love for his sister and family.

In the novel, Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, he shows that in society, those with less must often sacrifice more. In Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses, the concept of understanding sacrifice to establish a greater moral good is central to the main characters and their developed values. Specifically, McCarthy incorporates a great sacrifice of young love made by John Crady Cole’s love interest, Alejandra. Alejandra strategically surrenders her promising relationship with John Grady in order to accomplish a greater agenda: bailing him out of jail therefore, assuring the forbiddance of their of their future union. In this instance, the sacrifice of love and union reveals the character’s deeper values rooted in moral obligation. This passionate act of love exemplifies Alejandra’s strength and selflessness, while also displaying a deeper understanding to the overall meaning of the book by highlighting how valuable friendships and relationships come at a great cost.
Another example of sacrifice in literature can be seen in the novel Macbeth by William Shakespeare. There are great examples of sacrifice from the two main characters. In the case of Macbeth, we see the theme of sacrifice in the form of sacrificing for power, as opposed to Brave New World Where sacrifices were made for peace. Particular situations that assess an individual’s identity often mirrors the beliefs and morals they prominently value. Due to the overwhelming significance that sacrifice plays in life, writers and artists have often displayed this theme through various forms of artwork, such as novels, plays, and paintings. Adding it as a theme within pieces of literature and art encourages individuals to reflect on their own sacrifices and how it affects their values. As a result, writers such as Arthur Miller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and William Shakespeare utilized the concept of sacrifice to emphasize the important values of reputation, unconditional love, and loyalty.

In Mary Renault’s novel The King Must Die, the protagonist Theseus discovers the meaning of each sacrifice and the cost of each one. Thus, modern readers may feel renewed by the sacrificial rituals from the book just as Theseus did when he encountered them.
