Social Constructionism is the way we construct what is acceptable or not acceptable. It is the way we over time reinvent or redefine the way we perceive things. To socially construct a problem it first has to be noticed. Once a problem is noticed then someone or some group may feel it is a problem and decide to start talking about it and why it is an issue. If enough people start talking about it and everyone starts agreeing then we now have a socially constructed problem. For example, alcohol at one time was considered a norm. Then all it took was someone to observe and deem that alcohol was an issue, to start talking about it and why drinking was a problem. Social construction has been around since the beginning of time. It is the idea that a persons understanding of how society works is socially constructed. For example, the notion that women should wear makeup or that men should be interested in sex are both social constructs. Social construction is integral in society as it influences how people judge others and view the world. Social construction heavily affects gender and sex. These affects can be negative as they create prejudices and assumptions about different genders and sexualities. One can see this through how women receive more judgment than men or how men are expected to be dominant in society. Social construction perpetuates negative assumptions and judgments towards sex and gender issues.
The understanding of the concept of social of construction is in accepting that it is the social process of construction meaning to the things around us. We constructed meaning to those things around us through language and categorizing the world. For example, gender is a social construct in which we created two categories or two genders, male and female. We are put into one of these categories when we are born. Another example could be race, we are again, put into categories based off of our skin color. This social construct is what separates us further as a human from others alike. So what does it mean to say human violence is socially constructed? In understanding this we have to look at other words or language that have been created. Such as the world evil, or the word power. In knowing how these meanings are related to violence we can understand more what classifies as violence and even perhaps, what causes it.

The macrosystem is describing the cultural world along with ethnicity and the economic status. The teacher’s role in this style is not to sit and lecture information but rather engage students actively to find this information on their own and discover it so that it creates more meaning and provides a better understanding.
