Fahrenheit 451
Fahrenheit 451 was written by Ray Bradbury and published in October 1953. It is a dystopian fiction novel room during the postmodern literary period.
Ray Bradbury was born on August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. He started writing in a very early age—12 or 13—and wrote all the way into his late 80s. He died in LA on June 5, 2012.
The post modern literary period started after World War II, it is characterized by the reliance on narrative techniques such as paradox, unreliable narrator, pigmentation, etc.
The plot is summarized as follows: Our main character, Guy Montag, loves his job. Which is the burning of illegal books. he mix and

Beatty has Montag burn his house with a flamethrower. After all the burning, Beatty finds Faber’s communication device. Montag kills Beatty with the flamethrower and knocks out the other firemen. Montag then flees and goes to Faber 's house. After a brief conversation Montag sets out to find other readers that live among the homeless camps. Once Montag evades the police he finds a camp. He is then told that each book that the readers in the camp have read are now forever committed to their memory and now they are the books. After this the city is bombed by atomic bombs and Montag and the other readers set out for the city. The story ends with Montag getting away with the other readers and Montag 's life as a book begins.
These are the ten quotes I have chosen for my report: the first is: “It was a pleasure to burn” this quote starts the novel it shows how much Guy Montag loves his job and he was just another person living in the false reality of this dystopia. It also starts his character arc as man who burns books into a man that reads them. The second is: “How inconvenient! Always before it had been like stuff in the candle. The police went first and adhesive taped the victim’s mouth and bandaged him off into their glittering pedal cars, so when you arrived you found an empty house. You weren 't hurting anyone, you were hurting only things! And since things really couldn 't be hurt, since things felt nothing, and things don 't scream or
Chaos can turn into flames. Flames can lead into death and a lot more problems. Flames will cause a lot of body injuries. No one will want to see how it feels to be burnt or have a lot of different kinds of burns on them that will be a terrible feeling.
The author uses imagery to develop the characters Montag and Beatty. At first Montag was able to do his job (burning books) without giving a second thought. Throughout the story Montag grows an appreciation for books. This dramatic change is shown in the first paragraph of the passage as Montag’s burning of books is described. The
When an author produces a work of literature, they are greatly influenced by the world around them. Inspired by life in society, authors are able to create work that speaks to their observations and views on society and its functions. In the book Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury incorporated the corruption of the society in which he lived in into the dystopian society created in his book. Fahrenheit 451, a fictional book about a protagonist’s attempt to overcome a dystopian society’s corruption, was written by Ray Bradbury while living in 1950’s America. The book focuses on themes of censorship, and illustrates the effects of when a society is controlled and limited. The correlation between the story and the time it was written is
“"I’m hungry" "Last night" he began. "Didn’t sleep well. Feel terrible" she said. "God I’m hungry I can’t figure it" "Last night" he said again. She watched his lips casually. "What about last night" "Don’t you remember"”. Mildred doesn’t really listens to Montag He always tries to tell her something but she seems careless about it. He feels like he’s not getting the attention he wants from her. ““When did we meet? Where?”… “It doesn’t matter.” She was up, in the bathroom now, and he heard the water running, and the swallowing sound she made. “No, I guess not,” he said. This demonstrates that all this years of marriage meant nothing to Mildred. By her not remembering how they meet tells that Mildred doesn’t really care about their marriage.
The flash point of paper, or the temperature at which paper will burst in flames, is 451 degrees Fahrenheit. In Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, the main character, Guy Montag, is a “fireman” in a futuristic society where he and his coworkers start fires, rather than put them out. Books are banned and burned, along with the owner of the book’s house and sometimes even the owner of the book, upon discovery. Technology has taken over in a sense that social interaction between the average person and their television is more than the interaction between real people. The citizens of this society, with few exceptions, accept without questioning the repressive conditions of which they live in. As Montag meets and interacts with the different foils in the novel, he slowly transforms into someone completely different. In Fahrenheit 451, the author, Ray Bradbury, uses foils to characterize Montag. The foil Clarisse helps reveal Montag’s disconnect from reality and nature. Mildred, Montag’s wife, shows that Montag is becoming different than the average person and he is becoming aware of reality and the truth behind this society. Montag’s boss, Beatty, makes Montag appear very compassionate and humane.
Albert Einstein once said, "It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity." Back then there was very little technology that was controlling humanity. Today, phones are captivating societies around the world. Based on this, what will happen in the future? Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, portrays a world where technology goes too far. Throughout the novel, Bradbury proposes the idea of mindlessness of mass culture. It is a warning to societies everywhere because one day that could be the reality. The definition of happiness changes along with interest and care. They no longer care about anything. The definition of knowledge is also changed. They no longer read. This book was written when T.V First came out, and now seeing how technology is driving society today, this book is a cautionary novel. Their happiness, knowledge and mindlessness is all changed due to technology. This may be a society someday.Bradbury proposes warnings about the mindlessness of mass culture
One of the most significant heroic actions taken in this novel is when Montag begins saving books. In Montag’s society, books are banned for all people for all purposes. The firemen believe that books provide ideas and promote knowledge which serves as a threat to the government. Ultimately, the goal of the firemen is to destroy the books to create a society without conflict. Montag stores the books inside his home without his wife, Mildred, knowing. With Professor Faber’s influence, he begins to read and discover the truth about many things. Although reading is dangerous, Montag chooses to defy the government regardless of all consequences he might face. The books expose the truth which later differentiate Montag from the rest of society. Montag becomes a more intellectual thinker that realizes he cannot continue agreeing with what he knows is wrong.
The novel, Fahrenheit 451 was written by Ray Bradbury and it took place in the dystopian future. Throughout each novel, we are able to see a major theme, which is censorship. In this essay, I will explain how this theme are explored in the story by using the literary devices.
Guy Montag is the protagonist and central character of the book, Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury that transforms from a conformist in a totalitarian society to rebuilding a society that reads books. Montag fits the cliché description of a good-looking male with “black hair, black brows…fiery face, and…blue-steel shaved but unshaved look.” (Bradbury, 33) For the past eight years he has burned books. He is a 3rd generation firefighter, who in the beginning of the story, loves his job, which consists of burning the homes of people who perform criminal acts of reading and keeping books in their homes. By understanding Montag’s relationships, discontentment, and future, one can begin to understand the complexities of Guy Montag.
In Ray Bradbury’s famous novel, Fahrenheit 451, the relationship between Guy Montag and Clarisse McClellan is one of the most important and interesting. These two characters are so different, yet so similar. As a result of these differences, the characters are able to develop more independently through understanding one another. Clarisse has permanently influenced Montag’s life by demonstrating a part of it that he had forgotten about. While Clarisse is able to see the life in the point of view of another, and watch that change before her eyes. Montag and Clarisse have similarities, as well as differences in their outlook on life, emotions and lifestyles.
Montag always loved the smell of kerosene and he loved his job. He’s changed into a man who wants to read books and understand things he doesn’t want to burn them anymore. “A book is a loaded gun in the House next door burn it.” “There were people on this section of the train but he held the book in his hands.”(Bradbury, pg 58, 76). The quote from Beatty explains how Beatty feels about books and how he’s educating Montag into think that books deserve to be burned. The quotes from Montag on the train shows how Montag changed to agreeing with Beatty how books should be burned to not caring if anyone saw him with a book because he wants to read
Fahrenheit 451 was a story that described fireman who started fires of houses that had books in them. People were not allowed to think for themselves or allowed to read books to avoid entering a thinking of anything different then what they were living in. At first Montag was okay with this lifestyle he even enjoyed it until Clarisse made him question his way of life. Montag behind spending more time with her and slowly began to change his actions. He began this by slowly collecting books that should have been burned in the fires and hiding them in his attic. When he tried to let his wife in on this and wanted them to reconnect by entering a world of books she was against the idea and scared to get in trouble. She agreed to give him a day or two to get it out of his system. However, in the end she ended up being the one to abandon his trust the most by being the person who turned him in and then got in a cab and drove off never thinking twice about it. This resulted in Montag changing and him burning his captain down to avoid getting arrested. He was able to escape and start a new life and ultimately began happy.
Once Montag begins reading the book that he took from burning the books at someone’s house in the past, he realizes how censored the world he is living in is. He thinks about the whole issue with Faber, a professor, about everything that is wrong, along with the fact that they are not happy because the world they are living in censored. Montag later returns back to his wife who was watching “her family” on television, when she discovered that he had a book. He talked to her all about the restriction in their world, then went to work. When he arrived, he got ready to go to the next house to burn the books, and it was his own. He thought through everything and decided he would live a happier life away from all of the censorship, so he decided to run away. In the end, the whole city ended in a war, in the search for Montag, all because of the censorship that took place, causing all of this to happen. The people living in the novel thought that they were happy, but their lack of knowledge made it hard for them to see how miserably they were living. The novel Fahrenheit 451, displays the dangers of censorship, and the fact that people should be living in a world where they are
Books have played an important role in society for thousands of years. Books give people the foundations of being able to set opinions, the foundations of education and the foundation of preferences and perspectives on historical events. But, books also create opinion and require thought which can lead to disagreements and an unpleasant society. In the book, “Fahrenheit 451”, the author, Ray Bradbury, explains a futuristic society where books have become such a burden and the government strives so much for a world without fault that they banned all books from society. They view books as a problem because they promote thought and higher level thinking skills which can lead to controversy between minority groups that have differentiating
Now to summarize what the story is about our protagonist is Guy Montag, who is a firefighter that burns books since they are illegal. Then one night while walking from the fire station he runs into a teenage girl Clarisse, who tries to enjoy nature and the things that people do not appreciate anymore. Her innocence and free thinking cause Guy Montag to question his own happiness and society. That night he comes home to Mildred, his wife, to her overdosing on sleeping pills, which frightens him and makes him wonder his relationship with his wife. Then the next day the firemen receive a tip about an old woman that was holding books and the scenario goes downhill and the old woman torches herself with the books. A couple days later, Clarisse is killed in a car accident. This aggravates Montag and he wonders why someone would die for books and thinks that maybe books are the answer.
