I want to be a pediatric nurse. I absolutely adore children. I have been a preschool teacher for 4 years while I am continuing my education at Lonestar college to finish my prerequisite and get into nursing school. I desire to not only learn but achieve excellence. I go above and beyond what is required of me. I graduated from Lonestar College Cyfair with honors. I graduated cum laude and proud member of the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa honor society. I also graduated from Lonestar honors college. This is college allowed me to go beyond what I am capable of and set the standard for my academic excellence. I've very adaptive to new technology such as programs used for online documentation and electronic MARS. Other registered staff in my unit often comes to me for problem solving and troubleshooting with our online documentation program. I always put my patients first and I take the time to listen to my patients & families, no matter how busy my schedule may be. I work well under pressure and in a solo or team environment. The ability to become a student in the Grand Canyon University (GCU), Master of Science in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program, takes me one step closer to being able to achieve my dream of playing a vital role in helping our society towards disease prevention. During the first three years I will work as a nurse practitioner in an urgent care/occupational health care setting serving individuals living in low socioeconomic areas. Providing urgent care treatment in an underserved community is important to me, as these communities are in dire need of healthcare providers who speak their language and understand their culture. I hope to make a difference in these communities by encouraging prevention. With my BSN from Catholic University, I was hired at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where I began my career, developing the utmost passion for being a pediatric nurse, caring for the pediatric patient population in a hospital setting. I found myself drawn to the family-centered care with evidence-based practice as a foundation for the type of nurse I would become. Empathizing with families and what they are going through in an emergency department, while trying to provide the best, most innovative care for their children, became my priority. I began to desire more, wanting to see more of the country and continue to practice as a nurse in the Pediatric Emergency Department. I decided to become a traveling nurse, packed my bags and experiences and took the initiative to see and do what I could on my own.

Becoming a family nurse practitioner is my dream and my long term goal is to achieve this title and practice with it. I will be able to give back to several rural and urban communities by providing patients with quality care as a passionate family nurse practitioner. My ultimate goal after gaining immense clinical experience during my practice as a nurse practitioner is to give back to this amazing profession by transitioning to the position of a family nurse practitioner educator. For as long as I could remember I have always wanted to be a Pediatric Nurse. From the day I got my appendix out to all the other times I’ve had to go to the doctor, I have had many experiences with nurses. I have always loved taking care of kids especially when they’re in need of medical help. In high school I plan on taking two child development classes and two healthcare classes. I also plan on volunteering this summer at either a day care or nursing home. I plan on starting my nursing career by going to college first. I want to go to Winona State University in the fall of 2019 and feel that your scholarship could help me out with that goal.

The role of a Family Nurse Practioner is strongly influenced by Carper’s (1978) fundamental patterns of knowing. Personal Knowledge plays a particularly unique role in the development of all aspects of nursing care. Personal knowledge development is specifically used for the role of FNP by requiring the practitioner to examine his or her own attitudes, behaviors and values in order to reflect upon their own self to be compassionate, and caring, and to provide the highest level of care to patients across the lifespan.

Throughout my childhood and teens I have grown up watching shows such as causality and holby city which inspired me dramatically as it allowed me to gain more knowledge and understanding about a hospital environment. From then I knew I wanted to be a child nurse and I wanted it to be part of my everyday life. As soon as I started researching the role of a child nurse, I knew it was the perfect career for me as children’s nurse.
