Each book is set in a dystopian future where America is divided into 12 districts and the Capitol of Panem. The book follows the main characters of 16 year old Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. Katniss Everdeen is from district 12 and volunteered for the 74th annual Hunger Games. Peeta Mellark was the boy selected from district 12 and he secretly has developed a crush for Katniss Everdeen. The Hunger Games was established to remind the districts of the repercussion of the previous rebellion as well as instow fear into the districts. The 12 districts submit one boy and one girl to fight to the death on live television. To the rich and privileged people of the Capitol, The Hunger Games is essentially a reality tv show. Katniss and Peeta survive by hiding and killing other competitors during the games which led to them as the only survivors. For example Katniss had killed Glimmer (who was from district one) in the beginning of the games by dropping tracker jackers on top of her while she slept. Katniss later killed the male tribute from district one known as Marvel. He had trapped Katniss's companion named Rue in a net and then threw a spear which had pierced Rue in the abdomen leading to Katniss shooting Marvel in the neck with an arrow. Halfway through the games the game makers changed the rule of only having one sole victor to having two from the same district allowed to win together. In defiance of the capitol Katniss and Peeta decided that they can’t let the capitol have what they want and they decide to eat poison berries known as nightlock. Both reside in District 12, the poorest district in Panem, while Katniss and her family live in The Seam, the most impoverished section or District 12. This is especially difficult for Katniss as her father has died and she must support her impoverished family on her own as a result, by illegally poaching animals in the woods. However, after being reaped into the 74th Annual Hunger Games, both Katniss and Peeta feel the true burden of their place in a dystopian world as their lives change drastically. Firstly, the protagonists face the hardship of talking to each other again after the incident where Peeta had thrown bread at Katniss. This is exacerbated when during the Interviews, Caesar Flickerman encourages Peeta to win the Games to attract his love interest, but this is revealed to be Katniss when Peeta says, "she came here, with me". Their relationship is strained further when Peeta and the Career Tributes travel in a group; Katniss is infuriated by this. After several months, another political event looms and Katniss has to pose for wedding pictures. She's been gathering clues that many districts are rebelling and shares it with Haymitch. Before they can do much about it, though, they receive strange news. The next Hunger Games are announced, a special version called the Quarter Quell. The Quells are every twenty-five years and are versions of the Games with a twist. At the 25th Games, each district voted for who they wanted to be the tributes. At the 50th Games, the one Haymitch won, there were twice the amount of tributes. In this one, the 75th Games, two of the former winners from each district will have to re-enter the arena. This means Katniss has to go back and risk almost certain death for the second time. Katniss does what any normal person would do: she goes into hysterics. She and Peeta both go to see Haymitch and they all commiserate. Two out of the three of them are going back to the arena. Katniss makes Haymitch promise he'll help her save Peeta's life this time around. The next day, Peeta pushes them all to start prepping for the Quarter Quell. Then the Games arrive. Katniss and Peeta are sent off straightaway. Both are glum. They have some time together as they travel to the Capitol for pre-Games events, and they use that time to strategize further. They study previous Games and how other tributes won. For the opening ceremonies of the Games, they are dressed like smoldering
As the contestants rose above the smoke, the dust, the eerie fog, I stared in absolute awe. The game had begun; the sirens, the flashing lights imitated that of many - therefore scaring the contestants, each dashing for the armory in the dead center section of the arena. Their screams, consequently, were furthermore spread apart, the killing had a rate climbing faster than that of a bullet straight across a plain; the last of the few remaining as some sort of squad, as a team. It sort of reminds me of The Hunger Games - contestants fighting, running and all - but this is, as of now, and before, a different game. A dangerous game at best, rivers of fire and lava, acid rain and daily tsunamis ravaged the remaining players - gorges stretching miles deep, their culmination rising higher than the Himalayas; giant spiders striding across the ragged terrain, and prehistoric bats forming aerial attacks to finish off the remaining contestants. Those who were lucky made it. Those who were not? Well, let us just say that they were out of the game. One of my game's contestants managed her hindsight conservatively, understanding and applying rather swift. Coincidentally this could just end well for her; it is not quite often you receive a player with a hindsight.
