“…And this is for colored girls who have considered suicide but are moving to the end of their own rainbow…” (Perry: For Colored Girls, 2010). For colored girls was first written and performed as a play by Ntozake Shange in 1977. It was then called “for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow was enuf”. Tyler Perry adapted and transformed it into a movie in 2010. For colored girls is centered on nine women as they encounter their fair share of neglect, abuse, pain and harassment both physically and emotionally. They slowly but surely recover from such abuse and discover joy in themselves. The movie begins with the characters as strangers but at the end, they become good friends. I watched this movie because it was …show more content…
When one first watches the movie, one may quickly judge that the characters are in direct contrast to the colors they represent. In the movie, Tangie (orange) which means vitality with endurance plays the part of a promiscuous girl whose hatred for her mother drives her to do what she does. On further look at her character, I realize she is a true reflection of the color orange. She endures sexual abuse from her grandfather and faces abortion at a tender age but is still strong enough to overcome it and bring out her true beauty. The text also employ poems and songs to show the intensity of pain and emphasize the strength of each character and women in general. Characterization is how the characters in the text are viewed and developed as the text expands. For this, I will consider the character, Nyla (purple). Nyla is an innocent girl with dull eyes and voice. Her innocence is revealed as tells of her first time sex encounter and also in her lack of understanding of her mum and sister’s relationship. Her confession of sex to an older man is like that of a young misled child. She is ignorant of the world and its dangers. She just completed high school and is very excited, happy to lose her virginity to childhood sweetheart. Reality drowns on her when she finds out she is pregnant and needed to abort. Her innocence gives her away when she tries to
Tyler Perry’s movie “For Colored Girls” was inspired by a stage play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, written by Ntozake Shange’s. The story was adapted from a play that consists of monologues, which combines dance and poetry.
Characterization is a method a writer uses to reveal the personality of a character by what they do or says and what other says about them. Throughout the novel, we see Dracula, a creature of the night perform many evil deeds such as biting victims like Lucy and Maria, and control over violent creatures in nature. By these actions, it reveals that Dracula is a evil monster, an emotionless killer and very mysterious. On the other hand, VanHelsing actions such as trying to save Lucy from Dracula, deep emotional care towards friends like Mina when she is losing hope after her encounter with Dracula also reveals personality traits. By these actions, Vanhelsing is seen to be caring and have a strong belief in religion having powers. This shows how Vanhelsing is the most threating towards Dracula because both of their personalities are the complete opposite. As Vanhelsing uses religious items due to their powers over Dracula, Dracula perverts the way of Christianity and only causes trouble for other people. This is how characterization of both Dracula and Vanhelsing shows the professor is the largest threat to
“For Colored Girls,” directed by Tyler Perry is, in my opinion, a great drama that was released in 2010. Perry gathered some of the most prominent Black actors and actresses to display scenarios that women, particularly those of color, go through on a daily basis. There are multiple problems facing these women and although they all live in “a different world” and face all different problems, somehow they all are intertwined with one another.
For this assignment, I chose a modern day film that affected me personally on so many levels. I chose For Colored Girls by Tyler Perry because I could see so much of myself in the characters. The movie is based on Ntozake Shange's play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf." Tyler Perry uses twenty characters to live out the poems in the film. Each deal with pressing issues that affect women of color. I'm sure that many other women of color can relate to many of the issues these women faced in real life. The film personifies the struggles that women particularly black women suffer from including their personal crises', love, infidelity, rape, abortion and more. The film shows just what black women go through in their daily lives yet still stand strong
A majority of critics have praised For Colored girls for its realism and honesty, and Cynthia Bily points that many have criticized the play for being too negative toward black men, but Shange has always attempted to direct the focus of the discussion back on the women. The play is about the experiences of black women, and how they come a long way to
The text defines characterization as, “the author’s presentation and development of the traits of the characters.” (WEAL, 60) It is important to understand that characters are the heart of a book and good characterization is essential in order to make them real to the reader. Imagine for a moment, reading a book and having a hard time to connect with any of the characters, this factor could make the reader lose interest in the story. In order to keep the reader’s hooked, it is vital for the author to not only create but also develop the character so that it is easily relatable to the audience. The character Maude from the book “Harold & Maude” by the author Colin Higgins definitely satisfies this criteria. Higgins molded the character Maude from the personality of three different women he encountered in his real life and made sure to develop Maude’s personality throughout the book. The character Maude is what the text would define as a “round and dynamic” (WEAL, 61) as this character keeps getting fascinating and intriguing as the story evolves. This is what sets Maude apart; she is multifaceted from her badass ways to being a role model, all of these factors help make her real to the readers and hence, is such a lovable character.
The United States have a long history of painful inequality between races. Prior to 1954 the country was extremely racially divided by different laws and ways of thinking. American slavery began in the early 17th century, and continued domestically until the American Civil War. After the war, strict Jim Crow segregation laws were put into place to divide the everyday lives of white and black people. Lorraine Hansberry writes the 1959 play “A Raisin in the Sun” and tackles themes of institutionalized racism and segregation a black family experiences. She uses strong symbolism in her writing to comment on racist values and struggles experienced in post Jim Crow era Chicago by black Americans. African American feminist bell hooks’ memoir “Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood” also uses symbolism to cover the topic of segregation. Her memoir uses brief passages to highlight certain memories and dreams of hers. For this essay, I will use “A Raisin in the Sun” for the topic of residential segregation, and “Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood” for hooks’ insight on education segregation. Both authors were part of the Black Arts Movement which is the artistic branch of the Black Power Movement. The two texts remind readers that the historical and cultural conventions attached to a race do not disappear when laws are removed. Moreover, the embedded ways of thinking and the differential treatment of certain races do not automatically vanish when laws are no longer around. At the time of
Characterization deals with the people themselves: who they are, how they got there, and how they react to other people. Characterization is used quite extensively with Mr. Wright, who does not appear in the play. Mr. Hale describes the deceased man as having little concern for his wife’s opinions
“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are” Some people can't wait to grow up, whereas others want to hold onto the past and not see what is to come. Those people that hold onto the past or live in the past don't know how to move on. An author by the name Alice Walker(b. 1944) a woman that believed she could do a lot. Alice Walker wrote a book and it was also turned into a movie but a man stated, “the book — about the abuse and spiritual triumph of a black woman in the sharecropping American South”(Galanes) There is a movie called “The Color Purple” in this movie there is a girl by the name Celie. Celie has had a very hard life and she is not very courageous. This is one
Before the Violence Against Women Act was passed in 1994, a man could not be charged with the rape of his wife because the law defined rape as “the act of sexual intercourse with a female not his wife, by force and without her permission." After the passing of the Violence Against Women Act, domestic abuse went down 60%. Celie in The Color Purple is repeatedly sexually abused by several men in her life. While the novel is set in the 1930’s and 40 years onward, when male domestic abuse is still valid and unquestioned, the book still sends a message about male dominance today. Alice Walker’s The Color Purple uses the harassment and abuse of women throughout the novel to illustrate how female independance and standing up for oneself are important.
the main character is made up of many characteristics. The text defines these characteristics as characterization, or, “the way a writer
“I am fourteen years old. I am I have always been a good girl (Walker, 1).” From the first line of The Color Purple, the audience can already tell that the main character, Celie, feels as though she is a nobody. Celie is a very relatable character who talks to God about her misfortunes. This novel uses strong literary devices to provide insight into the terrible hardships that women experienced years ago and are still experiencing to this day. In The Color Purple, Alice Walker utilizes reoccurring symbols, violent imagery, and a somber mood to expose gender inequality in Post-Civil War America.
When you read about a character in a story, you get to know all about the character by the words the writer uses to describe the person. Characterization is all of the habits or traits, whether good or bad, of a particular person or character, either real or fictional. My favorite book and movie is the amazing coming of age story and a #1 New York Times best seller, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. There are so many amazing character developments in many characters through out the story. The book itself has different themes and has a lot of symbolism as well as imagery and allegory.
1) Characterization is defined in “Literature Reading. Reacting. Writing” as a way in which writers develop their characters and reveal those character traits to the reader. In other word Characterization is the way the author describes the character in more detail. It’s a way for the author tells us the reader important information about the character. Characterization can make the story more interesting and creates the story to be more detailed. Two stories in which characterization makes the story better and are similar in the way that the themes go is “A&P” written by John Updlike and “Araby” written by James Joyce. Both story is about a worker who is admiring a woman from a far. In “A&P” Updlike characterize the three girls
Characterization is the method used by a writer to develop a character. The method includes (1) showing the character's appearance, (2) displaying the character's actions, (3) revealing the character's thoughts, (4) letting the character speak, and (5) getting the reactions of others.
