The second interview presents a point of view of a mature Catholic person (Flor Leger, age 47). Flor like Rachel was raised in the Catholic religion. She has been a member of the Catholic church her whole life. She also has completed all of the necessary sacraments to be a member of the church (Baptism, the Holy Communion, and Confirmation). She was also married in the Catholic church which is considered as another sacrament. For Flor, religion is a relationship with God and the Catholic religion is the process that the followers used to reach it. She believes that the major difficulties to practice this religion is to maintain a good discipline to be an active member and help others as it is described by Jesus. She believe that as a mature person, you have a clear understanding of how much you need God in your life. God is an important aspect of our life and we need to do everything that we can to maintain a good relationship with God, the Catholic religion helps her to accomplish this. Flor understands that Catholicism is the only way to reach a true relationship with God (Flor’s Interview, 2-16-17). …show more content…
However, today many Protestants religions teach Christianity. Protestants have many similarities with the Roman Catholic Church. “While Protestants and Catholics agree on who Jesus is, at least seven key issues continue to distinguish their historic beliefs and practices” (Bock & Del Rosario, p. 352). According to the article reference above, there seven key issues that distinguish Protestants and Catholics beliefs and practices (the main differences between Protestants and the Roman Catholic Church): The Magisterium, Tradition, Salvation and Grace, The Eucharist, Justification, Priesthood of all believers, and Veneration of the Saints and The Virgin Mary. Each of these key concepts have been the points of division / separation between the Roman Catholic Church and The

Ask most people today if they have heard of Baptist and Catholic religion and most would say yes. In many ways the two are very similar. For instance, both are based on the Christian faith, belief in the trinity, and that God is the one true God. The two religions agree that Jesus died on the cross and rose again to atone for our sins. They share a 27 book New Testament and insist that salvation comes from Christ alone. On the other hand, while the Baptist and Catholic religions do have similarities, they also have differences, such as their services, communion, and views regarding salvation.
For my Meet the Believers assignment, I focused on Catholicism and Nondenominational Christianity. My Catholic interviewee, who I’ll refer to as John, is middle aged and was raised Catholic. My Christian interviewee, who I’ll refer to as Jane, is a young adult and was similarly raised Christian. From my interviews and attendance of worship services of both groups, several themes and concepts came to the forefront: the tensions between fundamentalism and modernism, the important conversation of gender and ethnicity, and the “true” good understood by both believers through their respective religious groups.
Elisabeth Lesuer was a very faithful, and intelligent woman in the late 19th century early 20th century. Being brought up in the upper-middle class, she was able to be educated privately in languages, arts, and literature. She has also studied much of the Catholic Faith. She meets the love of her life Felix Lesuer in 1886 while he was attending the University of Paris. The two married in 1889. While going to the university, Felix quits Catholicism, but the two had an agreement that Elisabeth can remain faithful, but Felix did not practice in the faith at all. Later in time, though, Felix started giving Elisabeth readings against Christianity weakening her participation in Christianity; One day this backfired on him when handing her Earnest Renan’s History of the Origins of Christianity, the first volume of which, The Life of Jesus, denies Christ’s Divinity. After reading this, Elisabeth does research on this matter, and experiences deep adult conversion, and returns passionately practicing the Faith, which she saw as the truth. Begins writing her spiritual journal in 1899 called Journal et pensées de chaque jour. The journal just showed how committed she was to that faith, even though her social society was against it, and how she would get by being faithful, without making Felix mad, and anyone else against the Faith she knew in her life. Elisabeth’s journal explained why she was so faithful, and how she would study, and pray the Faith in ways that didn’t upset those
During the course of the LDB481-17: Faith and Life Issues, Ms. Sams did not understand of the concept of vocation, before enrolling in the course. Nor, she has never heard the concept of vocation during at that time her twenty-two years on Earth. As she considers herself, a free spirit and a humanist regarding religion, Ms. Sams continues to note that she does not follow a particular religion. However, she keeps an open mind to how an individual’s religion has transformed his or her life. As a free spirit, by primarily having an open mind to the religious faith of Christianity, Ms. Sams assures that the spirit of God lives within each individual; regardless if he or she believes or does not believe in the spirit of God.
Having a religious belief is deeply impactful to one’s soul, spirituality, and sense of self. Gregory Rodriguez chose to join the Catholic Church at a time when others scorned it. The early to middle 2000’s was a scandalous time for the Catholic Church due to the sexual abuse of children within its walls coming to light. One might say that Gregory Rodriguez is complacent due to his decision to stay with the Catholic Church in spite of a controversy surrounding the church; however, based on his essay “Catholic Confessions,” we can reasonably infer that his choice to stay with the church is a wise one. While many people would have walked away from the church, Rodriguez was devout enough continue his walk with God.
The biggest difference between the catholic religion and the Jewish and protestant religion is the fact that catholic religion values celibacy. In the Jewish religion it as a great honor and privilege to give birth to sons while in the protestant religion, the big change that occurred was their rejection of celibacy and there removal of the use of nuns from their religious
A 54-year-old Catholic woman stated in an interview conducted on the topic of the modernization of the church insightfully noted that Vatican II allowed for “practical changes,” like “ music and singing, and women allowed into upfront roles as readers, lectors, and Eucharistic ministers, as well as altar servers in some places.” Vatican II “aimed to produce a different experience of the mass,” but also set out to reposition the church in a relative relationship with the modern world (Mathis).
Catholicism vs. Protestantism is the two largest religions in the world. Both are put together on belief that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary. That he died on the cross, arose and ascendended into heaven on the third day. That is where they get the father son and Holy Ghost. Both Catholicism and Protestantism have some of the same bases but are very different. First one of the main differences is the afterlife. After life, meaning who is going to heaven. Protestants believe that you believe in Jesus and you will have eternal life. Catholics believe that you have to believe and also act according to the word of god to receive eternal life. Secondly another difference is the structure of the churches. Catholicism is made up of one holy catholic
Christianity has been around for many centuries, and has varies groups that exist. Here I will discuss three major divisions within Christianity, which are Catholicism, Protestantism and Eastern Orthodox. These groups have similar beliefs in one God, that there is a Heaven and Hell, among other things. Although these groups have similar beliefs they also have many differences. Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox are both organized in a pyramid structure that is lead from top to bottom. The difference between the two is that the pope has leadership within Catholicism, and the Patriarchs system governs the Eastern Orthodox. Catholics are headed by one single person. Protestantism has no hierarchy, or a democratic government. All three have a difference
There are several sects of the Christian church, include Catholicism, Protestantism, and Easter Orthodox. These religions started as one universal church that split for multiple reasons. Catholicism was the first Christian religious sect which the others diverged. Protestantism was initiated by Martin Luther in 1517, after nailing his theses to the church door. When he refused to recant some of the passages within the theses he was excommunicated in 1521. Luther continued to study religious theology, finding that the church had drastically altered the teachings of the Bible for their own benefit. Luther was angered and frustrated by how the Catholic Church was being governed, he refuted the sale of indulgences, sale of church offices, and moral
In the following paper I will be in detail explaining the academic experience of visiting and observing a Roman Catholic Church and lastly I will shortly also incorporate the theory of Emile Durkheim and the Roman Catholic Church I completed a field study on. For my site visit I visited St Thomas Aquinas Church in Charlotte, North Carolina off of Suther road near the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I started to look up different churches in the area of Catholic churches in Charlotte and this was the first church to appear to me on the internet. I decided to go to the 9:30 mass or also called a liturgy on a Sunday. I did look over the churches scheduled masses and they had them everyday of the week. I arrived there about ten minutes before 9:30 dressed appropriately in a skirt and a dressy shirt, so that I could follow and respect the instructions of the pamphlet that the church provided online. I parked my car and gathered my tablet and sat in the back pews, so that I could take notes quietly. Before the service started I looked over the papers and booklet that the church provided to see what it included. The booklet included a letter from the priest, readings for the week from the bible, hymnals from the Vatican, mass intentions, prayer requests, stewardships, ministries, confirmations, and the priests and deacons as follows Rev. Patrick Winslow, Rev. Jason Christian, Rev. Matthew Kauth, and Deacons Rev. Mr. James Witulski, Rev. Mr. Joseph Diaz.
The separation between the Catholic and Protestant faiths is one based upon ignorance. It breaks apart two very similar groups of people due to lack of knowledge or understanding towards another. To help break this strife, In this assignment, it was my responsibility to visit a Protestant Church, to experience their celebration of faith, and to gain a deeper understanding of our brothers in Christianity.
Catholicism is just one of many religions that proclaims to believe in God, but it is unique in that it claims to be the true religion to reach the promises of God. It is important to go back into the history of Christianity and the foundation of the Roman Catholic Church in order to understand its position in today’s work and how their beliefs and traditions were
The Catholic Church, Catholic meaning universal is a church with unique practices, beliefs, and traditions compared to the Christian church.
