Football Concussion Protocols Every year 1.2 million sports-related concussions occur (Metzl). The largest youth football league dropped 9.5 percent because of concussions (Shotz). There is a protocol for this serious head injury and sometimes it can be ignored, cheated, or inadequate. "Concussion" comes from the Latin verb "concuture" which means to shake violently. A concussion is a head injury that is a result of traumatically acquired alteration in the mental status and can come with a loss of consciousness (Metzl). If someone thinks an athlete has a concussion, it is important to get them off the field so that the athlete does not make any further contact. The Washington Post says in important situations for quarterbacks, teams or medical officials seem to ignore concussion protocol. Many football players all showed enough symptoms or suffered a hard enough hit, that they should have been removed and given full battery tests and they were not (Kilgore). The football players need tests and here coaches ar ignoring protocol and not having their best interests at heart. Another case of the concussion protocol being ignored was with Matt Moore. After an obviously violent collision, Matt Moore should have been taken to the locker room for a full checkup. Symptoms can start to show minutes after the damage has occurred. Moore could have not suffered a brain injury and it's wrong to just assume (Kilgore). Matt Moore payed the price because the concussion protocol was ignored. Herm Edwards former football player and coach told SB nation, "If you're injured, you can't play. Hurt? The only guys who don't hurt in football are the ones who don't play,” (Bien). Although Herm Edwards does make a good point, there is a major difference between getting some bruises and permanent brain damage. Football players will not protect brains but a better protocol will. The protocol should reduce the risk of brain damage (Kilgore). Concussions have enough of an impact that they can affect someone long term. It is evident that this is something that in the future a former athlete would regret.
