Foreshadowing In The Cask Of Amontillado

Suspense in a story can be easily identified or not so easily identified, foreshadowing is one of the many ways that short story authors use to add more suspense to their story. In The Scarlet Ibis, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Most Dangerous Game foreshadowing is used to give these short story suspense. William Armstrong was his, Doodles, real name, it was said by his elder brother “such a name only sounds good on a tombstone” (Hurst 555). When the storm comes the reader can most likely guess that something bad will be happening because in most books, movies, and/or plays a bad weather event happens right before or during an intense scene. The mentioning of the word tombstone makes the reader think of the word death. This automatically gives the reader a want to read more to find out the outcome. When the bird, the Ibis, comes into the narrator's backyard and dies this brings immediate suspense as to why the bird just died. “The wings were uncoordinated” (Hurst 562) Doodle was also uncoordinated showing an immediate …show more content…

This foreshadows the revenge upon Fortunato due to Fortunato apparently insulting him, it creates suspense due to the fact that something will happen to someone, Fortunato. When Montresor gives Fortunato some sort of alcohol called “De Grâve” (Poe 9), the fact that the alcohol is called De Grâve (Poe 9) should hint that someone might be going to their grave at that time. This creates great suspense due to the fact that someone is about to die. The trowel that Montresor pulls out of his pocket, when Fortunato asks if he is a mason, should make Fortunato wonder why does he have a trowel in his pocket? But Fortunato is so drunk or not fully aware of what is around him because he is not picking up on these hints that something might happen
