Free Bus Rides for The Elderly
Should the elderly receive free bus rides? This is a controversial issue that many countries are faced with in nowadays. People analyze this problem by taking both pros and cons into consideration. Some people are in favor of the elderly riding bus for free because they have right to benefit the giving back from the society to which they devote most of their lifetime. On the other hand, some disapproval voices emerge in terms of influence of social economy or unequal treatment between the elderly and the others. The reasons why I strongly believe the elderly should receive free bus rides are lacking of finance, preventing traffic accidents, and promoting public transportations. A lack of finance is the first reason that the elderly should receive free bus rides. A majority of elderly is limited in their finance after they got retired; they are sometimes even not able to pay their fundamental living needs such as medicine and groceries. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12% seniors are living at the poverty level, and their income become lower and lower with increasing age; therefore, they would have difficulty in their constant expenses such as healthcare, housing, food, and so on. Not only do the elderly have to learn to deal with many forms of Ageism (the stereotyping and prejudice against individuals or groups because of their age), some also have to deal with the fact that they do not have enough savings or pension benefits to be self supporting, for most people over sixty-five, the major source of income is social security (Macionis, 2005). One reason elderly people should have to take a driving test every year is because there will be a decrease in car accidents, also because there will be less elder related car accidents. And the elders will be able to learn how to stop elder related car accidents. Also people will be able to stop elder related car accidents before they even occur. And fifty eight percent of car accidents are caused by accidents on the road, and elders taking a driving test every year will help that percentage. Family of elders want their family to stay safe and will encourage them to learn how to drive better. And families of elders can help by encouraging people to make a law saying elders should be required to take a driving test every year.
Lack of transportation can sometimes force an elderly people to disengage. They may be unable to attend health meetings, appointments, to see family members etc. This can affect the elderly individuals as this could have an impact on their mental and physical health as they will disengage and no longer
As a person ages, theirs body cannot perform the way it used to. This will cause many elderly people to loose their job or choose to go into retirement. Both of these options cause a loss in health care as well and a reduced or exterminated income. Here alone lies a reason that the elderly population is challenged. The elderly population also has a tendency to develop a chronic illness that can be life threatening if not treated or controlled properly. This means that need for health care treatments also increases. At least 40% of those over age 65 will have nutrition-related health problems requiring treatment or management (Gigante, 2012). It is important to realize that 10% of people over the age of 65 and will develop Alzheimer’s disease and 50% of those over the age of 85 will develop this disease (Gigante, 2012). More elderly African American men and women use government aid than white men and women. Therefore, this population will be vulnerable because of the lack of funding, proper health care and insurance.
In the fiscal year 2010, (O’Shaughnessy, 2012) only about 5.1%, or 3 million people, out of the 57.8 million people age sixty and over, received services funded by the Act. These services included home delivered meals, home care, personal care, or case management services on a regular or intensive basis. About 14%, 8 million people, received other services, such as transportation, congregate meals, or information and assistance on a not so regular basis. A report was made by the Government Accountability Office stating that their findings were that many older people are in need of meals and other supportive services to help remain independent in their own communities, but a large portion of them are not getting the help they are in need of. Some barriers causing this lack of help are lack of funding and lack of knowledge among the older Americans that they may be eligible for benefits and services can be available for them.
After reading The Age of Dignity by Ai-Jen Poo, I realize that she brings out many good concerns and information about where our country is heading in the upcoming years. Throughout her book we discuss our golden years and the care that we should be able to receive and how crucial it is for our personal wellbeing, independence, and securing our own futures. The 85 plus age group is one of the fastest growing demographics in the US and Poo talks about the possible solutions that need to be created in our infrastructure before we have an even bigger crisis on our hands. It’s a fact that the elderly baby boomers cohort is growing faster than we can care for them, this shows that we need to implement a new system that will be able to care and support our many elders in their life, and how we can do it with financial competency and dignity.
Transportation is an important aspect in the senior’s population when it comes to getting around to places like their doctor appointment or their daily morning program. Many older adults that do not have a family member to take them around depend on the public transportation such as buses, train, and taxi. In Boston, The MBTA provide a special program called The Ride that provided transportation to the elderly with a low cost. There are also other senior insurance companies that also provide their transportation through other transportation company.
