Gangs Illustrated In Hinton's The Outsiders

The Outsiders is a realistic fiction novel written by S.E. Hinton. In order for every book to have a good plot, it needs one or more conflict. In The Outsiders, there are several hostilities. The conflict doesn’t just happen to Ponyboy, but everyone in the book is affected by opposition. While there are many different kinds of disputes in this novels, the main ones are character versus character, character versus nature, and character versus society.

“The Outsiders”, by S.E. Hinton, is centered around Ponyboy’s path to maturity and the life lessons he learns along the way. The novel follows Ponyboy, a greaser, and his gang’s conflict with the Socials, a rival gang. In it, he learns to not judge people hastily and reject gang mentality. Ponyboy also loses his innocence. The following paragraphs will explore his growth throughout “The Outsiders”.

It was only two gangs, three deaths, and many injuries, but the bloody, death defying, life changing brawl is what ended all of the chaos.In book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton Ponyboy learns a lot about being caring. In this novel two groups called the Socs and the Greasers fight each other continuously. The Outsiders starts in a small town, in this town there were two gangs the socs and the greasers. The socs were rich and lived on the north side, they all had nice cars and lots of money. On the other hand there was the greasers, they weren't as rich as the socs and didn't have as nice of cars, or houses, or even clothes.”Greasers will still be greasers and Socs will still be Socs. Sometimes I think it’s the ones in the middle that are really the lucky stiffs”(Hinton, ch. 7) Gangs are a huge problem in the US and in this book it shows it.

I think it’s a great story that tells about how a fourteen-year-old boy overcomes many challenges and learns how to get through each of them individually. “The Outsiders” is a story about a boy named Ponyboy that lives with his two older brothers, and they have a group of friends, called the Greasers. One day Pony gets upset with his older brother, Darry, and goes to a park with his friend Johnny to calm down. At the park, a group of kids, called Socs, come and start drowning Pony. Johnny gets scared and doesn’t know what to do so he kills one of the Socs. Soon after, Pony and Johnny decide to run away so they wouldn’t have to deal with

In Tulsa, Oklahoma the society is divided by Socials (High Class) otherwise known as Socs, Middle Class, and Greasers (Low Class). The Socs and Greasers always get in fights with each other because they cannot accept each other. The main character is Ponyboy. He is fourteen and a Greaser that faces his troubles with his group’s help. His best friend is Johnny. Everyone in the group loves Johnny because he keeps everyone together. Ponyboy lives with his two brothers. One of his brothers is Sodapop who is known as the good looking one. He is understanding and gets along with Ponyboy. Darry is “tuff” and smart. He always picks on Ponyboy. In Greaser language, there are two words that are tough they just mean different things. “Tough is the same as rough; tuff means cool, sharp.”

Ponyboy and his brothers Sodapop and Darry are members of a Greaser gang, meaning they are considered hoods or juvenile delinquents by society. Other than being financially and socially disadvantaged, the Greaser’s main problem is getting jumped by the Socials, the rich kids from the West Side of town. Essentially, the Socs, are what make the Greaser’s life a literal living hell because they fear for their life anytime they encounter the Socs. Johnny Cade, Dally Winston, Two-Bit Mathews, and Steve Randle are also members of the Greaser gang. They all stick up for one another and protect each other from the Socs.

The story follows a group of people called the greasers since they live on the east side of town in Oklahoma, and they dress like your typical 1960’s gang with the slicked back hair and leather jackets the main character Ponyboy’s gang consists of his brothers Darry and Sodapop. The rest of the gang consists of Steve, Two-bit, Johnny and Dally. Their enemy in the story is the Socs or their full name the socials. The Socs are the rich kids that live on the west side and drive the expensive cars and clothing. In the novel the greasers go through a lot of events, especially Ponyboy which makes me believe he has changed the most throughout the book, and here is how I was able to analyze him.

The greasers are the cool kids that live in the hood and most of them grease their hair a lot where jeans and a t-shirt with a leather jacket. They were tough and smoked cigarettes a lot. The socs were rich bratty kids that dressed fancy and drove nice muscle cars. The greasers do not like the socs and they fight a lot. Ponyboy is writing a story about the greasers life and what they have gone through. It is about how they have to deal with the socs and when Johnny kills one of the soc they run away. Dally eventually comes and visits the boys, who are both convinced that they should return home. Dally submits and takes both of the boys out to eat; when they return to the abandoned church, they find it has been set on fire and a bunch of school children are trapped inside. Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dallas all rush in to save the kids, resulting in Ponyboy being knocked out. When he wakes up, Ponyboy is in the hospital along with Dally and Johnny. He finds out that everybody is all right, except for Johnny, who is in critical condition. After he and Dally are released from the hospital and win victory in a rumble with the Socials, they return to the hospital to dolefully find that Johnny has passed away. Dally darts out of the hospital in a fit of rage and is later shot by the police after being caught robbing a grocery store. Ponyboy is devastated, and soon begins to lose his mind until his English teacher assigns the class to write an essay about something meaningful.
