Throughout history, women have been regarded as of lesser value than men particularly in the public sphere. This is the result of gender stratification. Gender stratification refers to the issue of sexism, “or the belief that one sex is superior to the other” (Carl et al., 2012, p. 78). The theory that men are superior to women is essential to sexism. Sexism has always had negative consequences for women. It has caused some women to avoid pursuing successful careers typically described as “masculine”—perhaps to avoid the social impression that they are less desirable as spouses or mothers, or even less “feminine.”

Gender roles refer to the set of social and behavioral norms that are socially appropriate for individuals of a specific sex. Gender roles are never comprehensive, even within a single country, and they are always historically and culturally unpredictable. Gender roles in the United States for one cultural group likely is not true for another cultural group. Similarly, gender roles in the United States have changed drastically over the time period. Gender roles has been the historical evolution from a single family income in which only the male spouse works and generates income, to dual family income or a family in which both spouses generate family income. Gender plays a substantial role in how Chicanxs and Latinxs live their lives in the United States. Despite that both men and women who identify as Chicanxs or Latinxs, have had a very rough time feeling accepted and respected in the United States, gender is one of the many factors that contributes to how these individuals live out their lives. Gender roles are a set of behaviors that indicate that a person should fit in to a category of either being male or female. This is society’s concept of how men and women are expected to behave. These gender roles were commonly accepted before the twenty-first century. Society viewed males as being the main financial providers for their family whereas women were viewed as the maker of the home, raising and taking care their children. I think the one thing in rebel without a cause that really stood out to me as far as gender roles in our culture goes, is how the film kind of reversed the gender roles of James mother and father. What I mean by that is it seem like the way the film portrays him was his mother was the more dominant figure in the marriage and his father took the subordinate role that at that particular time in film was generally the domain of low of a female character. Gender is more than what the word seems to be, it has a variety of meaning such as, the role of a female or a male in society which refers to gender role. Masculine, feminine, transgender, cross-dresser, and drag are types of genders in society. Many different cultures seek the word “gender” differently, it all depends on your identity. Identity defines who you are as a person, a male or female. But some individuals can be introduced to the world as one gender but can grow into a different identity such as transgender or transvestite.
