Genre Theory is used in the categorization of films. Genres are dependent on various factors such as story line, whom the director is, and what are the audience expectations In using genre theory we create a short cut in how we describe films. Genres are categorized into and then sub categorized depending on the story and plot. Fantasy is a genre described as, “Any film with obviously unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters, or settings, often overlapping with various other genres, especially science fiction, but sometimes historical dramas.” (Goodykoontz, 2014) Fantasy is a genre that typically includes a crossover genre, sci-fi,

Low key lighting and odd camera angles are used in this part of the film while Harry searches for the Sorcerer’s stone and battles Voldemort. There is a slight horror aspect to the following scenes as Harry deals with the antagonist of the film, Voldemort. Horror is a genre that aims to create a sense of fear, panic, and dread for the audience. These films are often unsettling and rely on scaring the audience through a portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. As we grow to love Harry and realize his biggest fear is the man who killed his parents and also him, and then are forced to watch him return this brings horror into the mix as a sub-genre.

I approached my genre writing based on Writing in the Health Sciences guidelines for research papers. Since my chosen paper was a research paper, I looked for the sections in a research paper that included the abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and references. This helped me decide what needed to be in each section so I could elaborate on if it was included or was not.
What makes Harry different from Voldemort is his ability to love and embrace his humanity. But Harry is driven by revenge which in turn raises questions about his morality. Moreover, there are scenes in the film that are too scary for a young audience. For example, the scene where Harry’s mother is killed by a dark scary figure drinking unicorn blood in the forest; the there is another scene where the three-headed dog chases Harry, Hermione, and Ron,
So what are genres? When most people are asked this question they will reply with something like science fiction, horror, mystery, or romance. While these are not fundamentally wrong answers, those with such responses do not understand the full breadth of what genres truly are. According to the dictionary, a genre is “a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, technique, or the like” (Genre). Still though this does not capture the full breadth of what a genre really is. To explain how genres form, dynamically change, and serve their purposes we must first take a step back and look at some other fundamental concepts.
The main focus of the Problem Solution essay is to analyze different topics related to the subject of “image” in Asian American studies. This essays aims to go more in depth about the problems that surround the subject of “image” and then creating a solution to these issues. In order to get to a solution one must first come up with a method that includes thinking of a topic that is closely related to the subject of image, present said topic to the professor, compose an outline for a rough draft and eventually a final draft. This process will ultimately allow the student to further evaluate and resolve other issue in Asian American studies. While the reader of the essay better understands the problems that writing can have, the writer also presents and realizes how “genre” can cause different recurrences within social interactions.
In conclusion, what I discovered about myself about the demands of reading different genres is that each genre told a story behind it. Even though the genre can be simple, it can express more than it may look. It's necessary to know what category of genre you're reading because then you'll be able to understand the message it conveys, as it may have certain expectations. This knowledge can support my reading and writing in the future because now I won't look at one specific genre, but more than one so that I can gain more information and understanding.
Jenny Mollen, an American actress and New York best selling author, once said, “I think the power of persuasion would be the greatest superpower of all time” (“Jenny Mollen Quotes”, n.d.). In other words, if you are able to persuade someone, you can basically get anything you want. Today, many expert writers utilizes genre conventions to state their purpose and to persuade their audience. First of all, what is a genre convention? Genre convention is defined as a communication or a connection for writers and readers through the structure, reference, or language of an essay. For example, if a famous science author wrote a scientific journal article, then the
“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn the more places you’ll go,” says the famous author Dr. Seuss. In today’s culture though, many children spend great amounts of time staring at their personal devices or watching television. Children do not realize that reading provides a form of entertainment that proves not only educational but fun, too. Providing an exciting way to learn, books offer better entertainment than a movie, since books last longer than a movie because reading takes longer, as a result of this, they give more detail. Also, books grow the reader’s imagination because they allow the reader to envision the setting themselves. Whether through fairy tales, historical
A genre is a form of communication such as writing, a poster, or a blog within a particular discipline. Genre analysis provides better understanding of how language is used within a significant discourse community, and is a form of applied linguistics in which draws on linguistic and sociolinguistic theory to clarify the nature of language use and language learning in an education setting. In this paper, I will be analyzing some scientific abstracts for the engineering discourse community. The analyzation will be focusing more on research articles, thesis, reviews, conference proceeding, and engineering journals in electrical engineering. They both have one thing in common which is an abstract. An abstract is a brief summary of a research article, thesis, review, conference
In Kerry Dirk article “Navigating Genres”, Dirk elaborates on the true definition of genre and help writers understand how genre is incorporated in all types of writing material. Starting off, he explains how genre can be expanded beyond than what we know and how we write. Using Bitzer to back his thoughts up, he describes how new genres can be created by people. Dirk gave many examples on how genre has no limits, and the ways on how it’s more than conversation of styles; such as a fictitious newspaper using their headlines to show their genre. According to Dirk, two texts may have the same genre but, can also be different. While it is important to know that genre changes over time, Dirk explains how there are no set rules that apply to genre
No matter which type of job or career the author is looking for, a resume is a great first step. Generally, resumes are built and created in early adulthood by the author them self. There are a few things that can be assumed about the authors. First, they are middle to upper class individuals who like to show off their own personal qualifications, education, and academic and professional experiences they have obtained throughout their life. The audience in which will be looking over these resumes could be a pretty broad range generally speaking, but for the most part whoever the author is submitting the resume to will be the intended audience for this genre. I think it is safe to say this genre will be around for many years to come,
This charming story reverses the typical roles within a children’s book. With underlying issues of stereotypes, independence and empowerment, it fills children with imagination and teaches them the importance of being strong, smart, and the realization that beauty comes from within.
Although the most popular, the commercial film industry is not the only way to produce and project motion pictures to targeted audiences. Documentaries and avant-garde films have their own guidelines, production values, technological innovations, budgets, and overall viewership that differ greatly from that of fiction-based films. Many avant-garde films are made not only to challenge the existing use of film itself but also to express the personal views or experiences of the screenwriter and/or director. In most cases, fiction-based film focuses on telling the story of a character rather than shedding light on their life and challenging the presentation of the narrative. Commercial film and film documentary differ greatly not only in their
Coming into Writing 39B I did not know what to expect of the western genre, but I became eager to learn more about the genre as I was exposed to the films. During the second lecture, I felt as though I knew very little about the concept so I became too shy to discuss the character traits. That later changed when a peer of mine described a cowboy’s physical and metaphorical traits. That provoked a flashbulb memory to occur from when I was a child. I remembered always walking into my mother’s room and seeing her watching old western style, black and white movies that were very comical to me but to her they were very interesting. I would always ask her why she watched such boring, terribly directed movies and she would simply respond, “This is
The genre that I selected is Television. The first artifacts that I chose is the show called “The 100.” This show is somewhat connects to my selected genre. The 100 is about when the nuclear Armageddon destroys civilization on Earth, the only survivors are those on the 12 international space stations in orbit at the time. Clarke is one of the main character in the show, her father died when he got floated to space.
Genre is known to change discourse by the format the information is presented to the audience (Varela, 2008). It is also a category of composition that is characterized by a particular style, form or content as dictate by Webster Third Dictionary. However Trosborg (n.d) stated that for the past decade, genre identification, classification and description have been scholarly concern. Certain scholars dictate that genre is defined primarily around its basic external criteria such as journals and newspaper discourse while other scholars stand on the opinion that genre can be classify by its communicative purpose, linguistic content and form of role its play in the discourse made (Trosborg, n.d).
