Geography Of Jamestown

I wonder why so many people died in Jamestown. Well i think that so many people died because of the lack of their environment. There were a lot of problems in Jamestown i think that they picked a bad place to settle. The reason why the environment was they bad nature, bad relations with the natives, and bad job and skill.

Environmental Problems, including illness, caused the majority of colonists’ deaths in early Jamestown. The rivers and creeks where Jamestown was located were often brackish, meaning that they were too salty for use. This happened as water levels rose with the tide. Any waste introduced into the water by the settlers tended to “fester” and not get flushed away (Doc A). Drinking salty water causes severe dehydration, so colonists had to find another source for fresh water.

Jamestown or Virginia has been used as an economic front for the London company. Britain posted the nobles who believed they would find on the spot gold and be rich. However, this was not the condition because noblemen were not ready to face harsh conditions. Many of them died, and all the British did was just sent more and more of the noblemen to help maintain the colony, but it did not succeed. John Smith came from England and the colony has accumulated through the discipline that the noblemen did not have when they came to establish Jamestown. One of the main reasons were diseases. Many different factors caused lots of people to die of disease. This reduced the population and made it even harder for the settlement to grow. Diseases also spread quickly within the settlement and many people got sick. People were also killed by the native americans. From the start the English were mistreating the native americans, this resulted in a very strained relationship between them. The English would force them to give them food and would use aggression. On multiple occasions, the native americans killed some of the colonists of Jamestown. The colonists of Jamestown had also come during a drought. The creation of Jamestown started on May 24, 1607. Captain Christopher Newport led three ships, the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. "They named both the river and their colony after King James I of England" (Jamestown 28). They did not want to leave England completely or they would not have named those two things after him. There lived 15,000 Powhatan Native Indian tribes who had been living there for thousands of years. The English settlement of Jamestown, Virginia, was founded on May 14, 1607 by Captain Christopher Newport and his fleet of a hundred or so Englishmen. During the next nine decades, this settlement would begin as "a verie fit place for the erecting of a great cittie(Tyler, 33)", and develop into "nothing but Abundance of Brick Rubbish, and three or four good inhabited houses(Miers, 107)." Two major factors led to the gradual decay and destruction of Jamestown: (1) The profit-before-survival attitude of the English settlers, and (2) the persistence of the Indians of the area to drive the English from their native lands.

Jamestown was located in a swampy area and surrounded by rival local Indian tribes rather than the ally Indian tribe. The effect of these circumstances took over rapidly because they were more wealthy upper classman rather than commoners who initially lacked motivation to put in hard work and lacked knowledge of survival skills as well. This led to scarcity in food and resources which brought about a higher death toll in Jamestown.

Since the arrival of English settlers in 1607, problems began in Jamestown. They had problems with the geography, their leadership, and they were not prepared for what awaited at the settlement. When the English arrived at Jamestown Virginia, there was already Natives living in the area. This becomes a conflict in the further development of the colony. The joint-stock company was an association that sold merchandise to high investors who provided money. The Virginia company was the joint stock company that founded Jamestown. The settlers were sent to Virginia from England to find gold and get wealthy. What they did not know, was that there was not any gold in the area. The colonists spent most of their time looking for gold and left no time for producing food, and shelter. Because of this, in 1609 through 1610, the settlers faced a hard time of starvation, climate, and also disease. People turned to digging out graves and eating each other. Jamestown is a name that is well known. In May 1607, three ships arrived in the New World carrying Englishmen and supplies. These people would then settle in what is known today as Virginia.
