My legs are growing weak and my body feels like a weight. I have been walking for hours now and have not taken any time to stop and rest. The thought of me getting back to the highway, back to civilization, is the only thing that keeps me going on this long journey. Every step I took through that river against that huge current took a huge tole on me. I can’t wait to see the faces that I have left behind on my journey. Just the thought of seeing them again gives me the strength to keep moving and to get out of these woods. I’m so overwhelmed with excitement but at the same time I have a part of me that is nervous. I keep thinking about the same questions over and over. What am I going to say to everyone that I have left behind? What are their reactions going to be like? A few hours later I made it onto the highway and within ten minutes I hitched a long ride with a trucker who was going to Montana. He said he could drop me off in South Dakota at a bus stop and so I hopped in and we went on a long drive together. I didn’t really talk a lot and neither did he. We both seemed to be in our own little world with no distractions. I was to mesmerized by the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness which I had stayed in for months. While on the road I saw a lot of new construction sites for roads and buildings. I had no idea what I had missed out on while I was out there on that abandoned bus without any communication. I wonder what I have missed… there were sites where parts of the Alaskan …show more content…
Simply saying that I was okay and that I had the experience that I had always dreamt about. How I was thankful for meeting them and for everything they did for me and for caring about me. I have made the best memories of my life just by heading out to follow my dream and I have no regrets. I wonder now what my path has in store for me next and where it’s going to take me. Christopher
Have you ever wonder why they built borders? Or who built them? Or who prevents and controls illegals from crossing, and what they do to accomplish them from crossing? In the book, The Devils Highway, by Luis Alberto Urrea defines the effects the desert has to offer for the immigrant’s entrance. The Devils High Way is a measureless desert past Mexico and Sonora, which is one of the most isolated and driest deserts in the U.S. This is a desert which few
Why do you think McCarthy has chosen not to give his characters names? How do the generic labels of “the man” and “the boy” affect the way you /readers relate to them?
The book The Road Cormac McCarthy creates a darkened mood when he puts this son and father into a destroyed world. McCarthy created this concept of a world to intensify the meaning of the piece all together. This darkness in the world creates to fear and the isolation for characters to realize that this is how life is from now on. The son in this novel comes to the realization of the world due to certain events within the novel that manipulation the view the son has on the world.
Prometheus, a Titan in ancient Greek mythology, stole the fire from Zeus, the ruler of all Gods, and gave it to humanity, even when Zeus strictly told him not to. As punishment, Prometheus is bound to a rock. Every day, an eagle swoops in to eat his liver, but Prometheus does not die. His liver regenerates only to be eaten again the following day. Because Prometheus “carried the fire” to humanity, his days are forever filled with torture. Similar to the situation that appears in the Cormac McCarthy’s novel, The Road, the main characters, a man and his son also “carry the fire” for the sake of mankind. “Carrying the fire”, a motif that Cormac McCarthy portrays throughout his novel, The Road, can be used to explain the reasoning behind why
My heart pounded against my ribs. My throat was dry, but I had no one to talk to through the harrowing experience that I had just endured. My backpack not only weighed down my body, but also my morale. I looked around, but there was nobody in sight. Purposefully twisted metal and bright green trees encompassed me. I knew where I was. But I was lost.
It was a calm, bright day when the bombs dropped on America. The entire nuclear arsenal, turned against us, as result of corruption in The White House. They say 65% of the population eradicated, the rest fighting for the food that wasn’t destroyed by the fires.
In 1949 the Trans-Canada Highway Act was passed by Canada’s Parliament. The Act allowed for the building of a national highway with costs divided between the Federal Government and each provincial government. Construction of the highway began the year after the passing of the Trans-Canada Highway Act, 1950. Seven years after starting construction Saskatchewan finished its section, becoming the first province to do so. The entire highway was not completed until 1971, but Prime Minister John Diefenbaker opened the highway in 1962. The Highway is the world’s longest national road, 7821 kilometers, passing through all 10 provinces. The highway is not a single highway but rather splits into two or three parts in some areas. The main part of
This trip was unlike any other ones.Getting lost at such a big place, was a scary experience. This is a moment, that I will always remember that changed my outlook on people. No matter what, I learned to put the past behind me and be cautious of my surroundings. I guess that it just shows to make sure you know where everyone is at all times because you never know what can and will happen. From this experience, I learned to keep up with my group at all times and make sure I don’t get left behind even if I don’t like the people I’m working with. This time in my life reminds me to keep a watchful

In the 1940s the Beat Generation sprung up and took the nation by storm. Many people in their later teenage years started to become “rebels” to what society thinks. This rebellious lifestyle sparked various different views; those that look up to them, and those that look down upon them. Jack Kerouac plays a major role in this time period pertaining to this lifestyle, authoring many works about it, one being On the Road. He uses the characters in this story to depict the diverse views on the Beatniks. This strong interpretation used throughout the novel sets the stage for many other authors writing on behalf of the Beat Generation. The characters he uses in this
Upon finishing Three Day Road I find myself in an almost state of shock from the concluding events of the story. This is due to the fact that I would not have guessed that Xavier would be the cause of Elijah’s death, especially under the circumstances in which Elijah was in turn attempting to kill Xavier. Moreover, this caused some disbelief on my end as the pair appeared to be the perfect friends from what we learnt starting from their relationship when they were kids. One can see this through how the two worked together and taught the other the information they were lacking. For instance, Elijah taught english and Xavier taught hunting. In addition to this, I personally feel that Three Day Road adequately represented the discrimination and
One evening on a sunny day, there was a young man and woman traveling on I-55 South. They were smoking something and acting strange as well. The young man was speeding because he was trying to hurry home to sell his drugs. As he was speeding, the young lady gave him a sign that there was a police car on the side of the highway, but it was too late. The young man finally stopped and the police asked for his registration and driver’s license and the young man handed them to the officer. As the officer walked towards the vehicle he could smell marijuana. The two young adults tried to hide the drugs but it was too late, the officer caught them hiding them. The officer asked them to step out of the vehicle, and put their hands up on the car. As
In Cormac McCarthy’s The Road the story of a man and his son walking down a road in a post-apocalyptic world is told. McCarthy’s tale of the end of the world is set in a very realistic and dark setting while using depressing and miserable details about the world around the man and his son and the survivors that they come to encounter. Throughout the book, McCarthy writes about a “fire” that a man and his son are carrying, while they struggle with the notion that they are the “good guys” who are avoiding the “bad guys” in the world, all the while McCarthy leaves out somewhat important details like what caused the end of the world and what his two characters names are.
Jack Kerouac is considered a legend in history as one of America's best and foremost Beat Generation authors. The term "Beat" or "Beatnic" refers to the spontaneous and wandering way of life for some people during the period of postwar America, that seemed to be induced by jazz and drug-induced visions. "On the Road" was one such experience of Beatnic lifestyle through the eyes and heart of Jack Kerouac. It was a time when America was rebuilding after WW I. Describing the complexity and prosperity of the postwar society was not Karouac's original intent. However, this book described it a way everyone could visualize. It contained examples and experiences of common people looking for new and exciting
Jack Kerouac is the first to explore the world of the wandering hoboes in his novel, On the Road. He created a world that shows the lives and motivations of this culture he himself named the 'Beats.' Kerouac saw the beats as people who rebel against everything accepted to gain freedom and expression. Although he has been highly criticized for his lack of writing skills, he made a novel that is both realistic and enjoyable to read. He has a complete disregard for developed of plot or characters, yet his descriptions are incredible. Kerouac?s novel On the Road defined the post World War II generation known as the 'beats.'
