Is Goodwill Truly Good? Goodwill originated in 1902 in Boston by a Methodist minister named Rev. Edgar J. Helms. He went to higher end cities and collected used goods. Then, he would take these goods and repair them so he could resell or give these items to the less fortunate. He also trained poor individuals to repair and offered them jobs. “Going green” is the spread of knowledge and practicing environmentally and ecologically friendly habits. It is providing tips and ways to be involved in sustainable living. This concept uses the terms reduce, reuse, and recycle. Goodwill exploits these skills. Their business revolves around collecting unwanted things and selling it to be used again. Most people shop there not knowing that they are doing their part and recycling. Job training comes into play because they teach individuals in their community skills that also enhance the recycling process. They teach them how to analyze objects, repair them, and determine decent prices. This is an investment for not only their industry but in the economic health of their community. Goodwill teamed up with Dell to formulate the Reconnect program. Dell describes the program as a program that puts "technology and jobs back into the hands of those who need them most” (Johnson). The program started in 2004 and opened 250 jobs. Reconnect allows people to donate old computers, this donation helps allow “technology, education, training and career services” to people who need extra help” (Johnson). Thrifting has allowed Goodwill to make their mark in “going green.” The have helped to reduce the amount of waste in landfills. Landfills come with many harmful effects to the environment. Goodwill acts outside of its industry alone. They teamed up with Dell and dabbled in the electronic aspect of recycling in a Reconnect program. Also, they powered their own donation movement. Community involvement means a great deal to Goodwill and the community. Recycling in general lowers greenhouse gas emissions that are caused by manufacturing items for the first time. Recycling electronics conserves natural resources making cleaner air and water. The valuable resources computers and electronic components carry are metals, plastics, and glass. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), recycling a million laptops would give back enough energy for 3500 American homes’ electricity. A million cell phones would could yield 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium. Instead of throwing out the old computers and blackberry’s, the company could simply upgrade the hardware or software and then recycle the parts necessary.

One of the successful company that set it foothold in the United States is the Home Depot. It is a company that sells hardware and many home improvement materials. Their company core value is to take care of people and giving back to their communities. As the company began to grow, they had been helping out and supporting their community in various different ways including donation, support the people who suffer from the natural disaster, build homes for people, and encourage people to recycle their stuffs and many other things. They also established the Home Depot Foundation to help support people who need their help. These are some of the philanthropic activities that Home Depot willing to do for their community.
Now, many of these larger businesses have kept their promise in being socially responsible by helping the local community. We were able to test this when that Tornado hit earlier this year. We also see many of these businesses supporting our school events and community members who are in dire need of assistance. Many of these business organizations donate hundreds to help the people of Lindale. This is not seen much with other communities but Lindale still has that family feel to it and keeps promoting a strong partnership between business leaders and community

Everything - from the cars we drive, to the electricity used to power appliances and other conveniences, to the clothes we wear and the foods we consume – affects the environment around us. Natural resources are being depleted and the purity of the air we breathe and the water we drink is being compromised – a result of creativity and progress in an effort to improve our lives. Throughout the past several years, the government has offered tax credits to promote implementation of products aimed at reducing environmental impacts.
Goodwill Industries are organizations for nonprofit making that provide or render employment, community based programs, placement services, and job training to individuals that cannot access proper education, disabled individuals and the unemployed. With so many foundations in the United states, how do you choose who to donate to, and why? Well the best way to choose is to do a little research on the foundation, find out what they are about, were the money is going and exactly how it is all spent. Chances are most non profit foundations are a good choice as there is no big paycheck from the work they are doing. In managing the business aspects of this position it would not be difficult to have Goodwill’s mission in mind and demonstrate the values of the organization. In this position I would most likely be working with staff more than the public served by the organization, however I know my interactions with other staff would trickle down to the public. In carrying out my job duties I plan to identify opportunities to streamline existing processes and establish new procedures that help those working the school data work more efficiently. The goal was to encourage companies to launch their own green initiatives. The program manual includes information such as finding a champion within the organization to promote and drive the program, poster templates, how-to advice on launching the program, building an awareness of the program within the company, etc. The manual is provided to all Office Solutions customers. “Whether they want to recycle the product through us or by themselves, we're there to make sure they're doing the right thing and make it easy for them.”
Sales from clothing, toys, electronics, shoes, and more help provide job training and employment placement services for people with special needs, veterans, single mothers, and others. This year, alone, donations has helped Goodwill get 173,517 people back to work.
