The Great War The Great War began in 1914 in the wake of the Industrial revolution and the pursuit of imperialism. The Great War, also known as World War I, started off as a war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. This war was sparked by the assassination of the Archduke of Austria Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Bosnia by the Black Hand, a Serbian terrorist organization interested in freeing Bosnia and Serbia from Austria (Modern world history, “Who Should bear the blame?” 2). The Great War was the result of a lot of different factors that can be narrowed down to militarism, nationalism, alliances and imperialism. Though each of these reasons contributed to the Great War, alliances and imperialism were some of the main reasons for …show more content…
Because the countries are connected, large wars were inevitable. There were two main alliances in Europe, the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy) and the Triple Entente (Russia, France and Britain) (Modern world history, “The Alliances” 4). In source 4 (Modern world history, “Source 4” 4), the picture shows the military and naval strength of each country that took part in the war at the time. Germany had the largest army while England had the largest navy. Source 4 shows the scale at which the war had taken place; it also shows that the war was quite balanced between the two sides, which could result in a lot of casualties. Source 6 (Modern world history, “Source 6” 5) is a satirical comic that emphasizes on the changing alliances and how all the countries were so well connected through their alliances that if anything happened, all the countries would get caught up in it. Source 9 (Modern world history, “Source 9” 7) is a comic that shows the strength of the alliances and how a massive war is very easily obtainable. To conclude, Alliances were the main reasons behind the Great War because it connected certain countries in a way that involved them in every conflict. All major European countries had to step in to fight a war that started out as a conflict between Austria-Hungary and
The Thirty Years War was an incredibly important event that took place during the 17th century. It caused phenomenally high destruction rates throughout Europe, especially Germany. These battles that make up the Thirty Years Wars were extremely influential towards the European people and governments. The Thirty Years War seemed to have many political factors that fueled its beginning and continuation but the religious factors were more prominent and important to the progression and completion of the war.
Great War, also known as The First World War, lasted for four year (1914 to 1918). It brought a huge development of war technics and weapons. More number of countries had been involved in the Great War than any previous war. It involved the mobilization of the whole nations, not just an enormous army that turned the war into a “total war”. (Clare 6) However, historians are still arguing about the major cause of the World War I. The major cause will be one of the four long-term causes of WWI, which are Militarism, Alliance, Imperialism, and Nationalism. In my opinion, the two major causes would be Alliance and Nationalism. Alliance is an association between two or more countries for mutual benefits that formed with different treaties, while
1. Although the war began in Massachusetts in 1775, it shifted south to the middle states, with a year. After 1779 the South became the primary theatre. Why did this geographic pattern develop, what was its significance, and why did the United States eventually win?
The Great War is remembered in history as one of the most gruesome and bloody wars in history. Millions of people died for their countries on foreign fields of battle, all the while in their homelands their fellow citizens suffered the effects of total war. Citizens of the warring nations entered the Great War unprepared and unrealistic. They truly believed that the war would be a way to lift off steam for all countries and that the death count would remain low. They believed that the war would be over in a few months, in time for Christmas. Fueled by nationalism and military exuberance millions of troops marched into battle against their foes and eight million troops lost their lives to the brutality. Total war broke out on both the battle
One may ask the question, “Why did small countries want to start wars with countries that were world powers?” Grant it, the U. S. become an independent country by starting a war with the world’s largest empire, Britain, during the 1700s. One may see it like a small boy picking a fight with the biggest boy in school, maybe the individual wanted respect or he did not want others to bully him. So, why did Japan start a war with the U. S.? Japan definitely had a large enough military, about 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 soldiers willing to die for their Emperor. Japan also welcomed any type of ground invasion, it was their homeland and obviously they knew the terrain. Japan understood that they would have the upper hand if the U.S. invaded and there would
While the recent assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand is what led to the war, there are multiple underlying factors that imitated the war. One of such factors is imperialism. In the past few decades, countries in Europe have been competing for land to expand their empire. This had led to various feuds igniting a hostility between countries. Nations did not trust each other and were cautious. Another factor is patriotism, people believe there country is the best and want their country above the rest. They like to promote their culture and beliefs to other nations. All the hidden factors meant the Great War was a war waiting to
The Great War was one of the most carcinogenic battles in history ignited by the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and as a consequence, defensive alliances promptly took global military action. In contrast to previous wars, it revolutionized the work field for women, refined weapons, and also caused mortifying casualties. It spurred a demand for labor and in this new chapter; women were nurses, teachers, secretaries, and factory workers (“Women's Roles on the Home Front”). This war became distinctive as it did not follow the traditional lines for weapons since new technologies defied previous rules and expectations (Abayawickrema). It was viewed as the dawn of modern chemical warfare, resulting in approximately 1,240,000 non-fatal casualties, and 91,000 fatalities (Brunning). This war was also shocking because unlike previous wars, it resulted in “over 37 million casualties: over 17 million deaths and 20 million wounded” (“World War 1 casualties”). Overall, 61 countries were involved in global war, including Italy.
The Great War, also known as World War I, began when a Serbian Nationalist assassinated Austria-Hungary’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914. The United States did not enter until the Zimmerman Telegram was intersected. It was Germany’s attempt to ally with Mexico so they could beat the United States. Germany told Mexico that when they won the war,
The Great War was a global war originating in Europe that began in July 28th 1914, and ended November 11th 1918. The war was mainly between the United Kingdom, France, and the Russian Empire fighting against the central powers of Germany, and Austria-Hungary. America didn’t join the war until April 1917, because the United States was unprepared for its entrance into the First World War. The hopes for this was when done was to put an end to all the wars, and to have peace. During the war people called it the Great War but shortly after it was over they started to call it World War I, because they knew that it wasn’t going to be the
The early 1900s was a time of extreme nationalism throughout all of Europe. Nationalism is a strong sense of pride in one’s country. Militaries were becoming stronger and alliances were formed. France, Britain, and Russia formed the Allied Powers and Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire formed the Central Powers. All European countries were boiling over with excitement and pride. Everyone was waiting for a spark to ignite the war. War broke out over trouble with the Balkans in 1914. Russia supported Serbia becoming independent, but Austria-Hungary wanted to remain in control over them. The Great War was the most horrific war ever seen due to new technology invented during the Industrial Revolution. Extreme nationalism
The Great War all started over competition between the countries of Serbia and Austria-Hungary. The 2 countries constantly battled between each other for which many believed it was to show which was the better country. “Austria-Hungary opposed Serbian Nationalism because they feared it would
The assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand led to the beginning of the Great War. Though that one event probably did not carry enough importance to cause a worldwide impact, there were several factors such as the imperial wars and the arms race that also were important in causing the war. The death of the archduke then was just a disguise or an excuse for these countries to go to war because tensions had been building amongst one another for years.
The Great War was an inevitable event when Austria-Hungary set out to overthrow their neighbor, Serbia. World War I was an important period for the modern world because nations experienced with new technology and old tactics got outdated with new ways of war. The war also brought many deaths to all nations. In addition, the nations involved in the war had huge amounts of debt to pay for losses and to other countries. Many aspects prior to World War I caused it to occur, including alliances and MANIA, but Austria-Hungary created bigger problems that pushed everyone into the war. Two of the main causes that started the war included Austria-Hungary’s alliance with Germany and the ultimatum they sent to Serbia. Austria-Hungary caused World War I with their actions.
The Great War in my opinion had many causes to why it started such as the mutual defense alliances, nationalism, militarism, imperialism and the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Over all in my opinion the main cause for The Great War was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This was the main cause of The Great War, because his assassination led to mutual defense alliances declaring war on each other.
World War I was supposedly the war to end all wars because of the size of it. There were two groups which fought, the Central Powers and Allied Powers. Germany, Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire were a part of the Central Powers. France, Russia, Italy, Russia, Romania, Japan, Great Britain, and the United States were in the Allied Powers. (World War I History, 2009) World War I started in 1914 because of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. (World War I History, 2009) Though it is said that was the reason for the war, two theories describe why the great war broke out. The two theories that best describe why World War I broke out are Marxism and realism. Out of those two, realism best explains why it happened.
