Grillo In Always Running

In Always Running, is the memoir of Luis Rodriguez battles an external conflict of having to be threatened by the police because he is involved in a gang. Luis ultimately resolves this conflict by making a huge change and leaving the gang and going back school and becoming an activist person; however, this choice also illustrates his true character as a motivation person. Luis’s decision to stay motivated also reveals the universal theme because it’s never too late to make a change in life and also fight for what is right.

The essay ‘Against the school’ by John Taylor Gatto draws our attention on to all the cons of attending twelve years of high-school. Gatto has experience in teaching profession for twenty-six years in schools of Manhattan, he shares from his experience that he majored in boredom and could see that everywhere around him. He also points out the initial reason why schools came into existence and what the purpose it fulfils now. He also educates us on the fact that all the great discoverers never attended school and were self-educated.The main idea Gatto addresses in his article are that public schooling is doing the youth an injustice.He implies that the purpose of schooling, now is to turn children into good employes and someone who follows orders.

Throughout the novel Always Running by Luis J Rodriguez, Grillo the main character is trying to find a way out of the gang life, to find a better life for his family and himself. While Grillo was trying to find a way out the gang life he falls into drugs Grillo starts doing drugs to suppress his issues in life with his family, school, and himself. Grillo also faces the death of his friends, and participates in violent crimes with his friends. As a result of Grillo doing drugs, facing the death of his friends, and participating in violent crimes with his friends, his character changes a great deal within the novel.

Education is an ongoing process that one can never escape form. Whether if it is in an educational institution, exploring a new topic in the news, or hearing about different cultures, global or local, education fails at being able to completely leave someone alone. However, an end of education also depends on how someone defines it. Rodriguez defines learning as a desire to escape. It is an escape from family by abstracting himself from normal family/home habits - “he takes his first step toward academic success, away from his family,” (page 341). It is an escape from the life everyone expects of him especially being from a working class family to excel beyond the primary education his parents have had set for him, “He cannot afford to admire his parents,” (page 341). This “habit of abstracting from immediate experience” encloses Rodriguez in his lonely environment that he once craved into a community where communication between a reader and writer is nonexistent. In Luis J. Rodriguez’s novel, Always Running, there were many scenarios when Grillo’s character changes throughout the story. These changes include joining a gang, dropping out of high school and drug use. He hit rock bottom in his life by surrounding himself with the wrong people, causing traumatic situations to now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

“I glimpse in the distance certain roads , clearings silent in the morning after the nights demons have fled: the future . The ageless future where there is always time to create”, this quote means that no matter what you've been through or what you've done or how bad it was, what you've done can always come back from that and start all over and I think thats what happened with Grillo in the novel Always Running. In the novel Always Running By Luis J. Rodriguez, the author illustrates specific events that caused Grillo, the main character to want to live a better life due to the fact of him abusing drugs, joining a gang and facing family rejection. This story is an Autobiography and transcends from Luis Rodriguez being a young boy to a trouble teenager.

I can relate to what Rodriguez was feeling; school has changed me I have a different perspective on life than I did before. I no longer want to just hang out with friends like I use to, I honestly rather be at home with my own family. I have also made it my life goal to change who I am for the better; I have been around lots of people and I’ve been able to see different takes on life at all types of angles. I want to create a better angle for my family; I’m working hard in school to be able to provide this life that I can only dream of right now.

As we go on in life we face many challenges and new situations that we deal with. A new situation that most people deal with is college and all the changes that come along with it. What many people don't realize is that high school, in many ways, is similar and differrent from college. Not only are people changing but the surroundings and work change as well. There are some things that seem to never change such as some work and people.

Within chapter four a reader can see justification for why the novel is titled Always Running. Within the chapter Grillo goes through a difficult time in which we see him try to run away from his problems by attempting to commit suicide. Grillo states that he felt like he was in combat with himself. Looming in front of me was something new, a fresh start. Despite being this, it seemed cold and trying, something that sent shivers down my spine. Mixed emotions of uncertainty and optimism had filled my first day of middle school; and as my final year is drawing to a close, I realize that this place-this transitional time in my life- is something that I never want to leave. I created a home away from home, and a family, over the short three years spent learning here. Each school year, from first to concluding, brought new experiences in which have altered my life. These are the things that I am hoping to carry over into high school-my next chapter. Every experience in which middle school has brought leaves me changed indefinitely, shaped for the future ahead.
