An ongoing and highly debated social problem that continues to grow in our society today is the gun control epidemic. Gun violence in the United States is a national epidemic. Many people take advantage of guns using and manipulating the tool with hardly any thought. Countless lives have been lost due to fact that people have been able to obtain firearms legally or illegally and have taken the notion to be judge, jury and executioner in holding ones live in their hands. This is a common issue that will continue if action is not taken as a nation to try and stop it. Gun violence can lead many citizens to believe that no place is deemed safe anymore and recent tragedies that have taken place in United States holds up that statement. In …show more content…
You have other cases where school is not a big priority or a big motivator because the school itself may be run down and can only make the most out of the limited resources the school budget has allowed. In other cases you may have been influenced by peer pressure or friends as this is only option for a way of life. The second amendment states that right to keep and bear arms. This law has been etched in the United States history for centuries thus creating the highly popularized debate whether they should be gun control laws. Members and advocates of the National Rifle Association would argue against gun control. Their aim is to shift the focus away from guns and their destructive potential but instead have people focus on the criminal and shift the argument to them being mentally incapable or suggest that there is a lack of security within schools (Henigan 2009). Voices of the NRA do make valid points, however it prevents them from seeing the bigger picture. We as a society have drifted from the crux of the issue, which is, when put simply, guns are dangerous. In America, guns are extremely dangerous. Anyone who chooses to Google “gun violence statistics” and find the official research study done by the National Institute of Justice it would show you that 15 of the 25 worst mass shootings in the last 50 years took place in America. It also vividly reminds us of how guns are easily obtained. The mass shootings that took place in America over the last
Gun Control in America has been argued back and forth for decades past. On one side it is strongly believed that the Second Amendment suggests that individual citizens have a constitutionally protected right to own a gun and protect themselves. These individuals believe that gun control laws do not in fact reduce gun violence. On the other side it is said if Gun Control laws are enacted there would be less gun and school violence. Also, it would be harder for criminals and juveniles to obtain a firearm. Both sides have very valid arguments and historical evidence to back their positions on within this debate.
We have had several of the worst mass shootings in our nation's history in quick succession over the past few years. Certain legal restrictions and acts from our government could have prevented numerous deaths. Common sense background checks and limitations to cartridge size and assault weapons would surely have saved many lives at the Las Vegas Massacre, but certain men and women claim that these restrictions violate their second amendment right. They claim that guns aren't the problem. That guns don't kill people, people kill people. So limiting access to devastating guns is just avoiding the problem. The Second Amendment right presumably violated by common sense gun control is “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Second Amendment). The Second Amendment states that for the need of a well regulated militia to protect the security of the free state and the right for the people to keep and bear arms. Militias have been inactive for decades so in a sense the intent of the amendment is no longer relevant. Based on the 2nd Amendment, the Constitution is not still a valuable and viable document in modern America because it stands in the way of thorough background checks, training courses, and its vague wording and absolute intent make it inefficient to maintain peace and order and should be amended “To the People of the United
Imagine going to school where instead of worrying about a grade you got on a test, you have to worry about your school being the next victim of a mass shooting. The Second Amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (United States Constitution), and yet instead of some people using their guns for self defense, they use it for mass shootings. Some argue that we already have gun control laws that don’t work, but others say if we had better gun laws than it would work. The debate on gun control started in November 22, 1963, when evidence in the assassination of president John F. Kennedy increased public awareness
Gun control is a very big issue in the United States today. Many people don't agree with the gun control laws that they have today. Gun control laws only take guns away from law-abiding citizens. Many people have their own reasons for owning a gun. Why would the government want to make it harder for people to own a gun? People that own guns are not very likely to be attacked by criminals. Owning a handgun is one of the best ways of protection. The second amendment states "the right to bear arms" does this grant everyone a right to own a gun? Gun control laws have not been proven to do anything for citizens. Gun control laws just make it harder for a good guy to own a gun. Gun control laws are not a good idea.
“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” These are the famous words drafted by the founding fathers into the Bill of Rights. This particular amendment has since then been a major part of American culture. Through the second amendment it has given American citizens freedom to buy firearms of any sort: AR-15s, AK-47s, handguns, and the like for self-defense. However, in light of the most recent mass shootings, people have felt that it is time to change if not regulate the freedom the second amendment grants. That is to say that some believe that there needs to be a solution to reduce if not end the gun violence in America by regulating and restricting the access to weapons meant for the police and military by American civilians. Ultimately, the solution to this social problem of gun violence in America is gun control. What is gun control exactly? From an extreme conservative's perspective, gun control is a means of disarming the public and infringing the right the second amendment grants Americans. What this point of view fails to take into account is that gun control is not about infringing on any right or disarming American civilians. It is about restricting the access and sales of deadly firearms to potential felons who have the capability of using them to commit mass murder. Furthermore, what some do not realize is that the second amendment was written in
“The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it” said Thomas Jefferson (insert citation). What would happen to American Citizens if there safety and protection was completely in the hands of Uncle Sam? How could a person live without fear? Gun control has been an issue that has concerned the United States for many years. While the legalizing of gun control specifically about high capacity magazines and assault weapons has only been a forethought, never passing all the way through lawmakers, it is a thought that many people have had, and is definitely a thought people are having as mass shootings are becoming more common. Advocates for these set of laws feel that guns are a threat to society and should be outlawed. There are many important arguments about whether or not guns are an inhumane part of American culture. The first of these is that many people are not in the correct state of mind to make a decision that can end lives. Another argument is that guns should be used to build up our country, to protect it, not to break it down. The third argument against gun control is that the use of guns has become outdated in the protection that our local law enforcement can provide. High capacity ammunition clips and assault weapons should be legal in the United
The ongoing debate about gun control i largely intertwines with the 2nd Amendment. In 1791, our founding fathers ratified the 2nd amendment to the constitution, allowing the “right to bear arms”. As law-abiding citizens, we should exercise our right to carry a gun responsibly. A large portion of the American population feels that any form of gun control enactment would infringe on their rights as a gun holder and eventually eliminate their privilege to possess a firearm. Which could possibly lead to challenging other civil liberties. However, due to the carnage left from mass killings, mentally disturbed attacks, assault weapons, and terrorist, stricter
The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The right to bear arms is not just a right given to American citizens by our forefathers, it is a God given right. In response to recent mass murders involving firearms, gun control advocates have heightened the urgency to increase gun control laws. Ever since Eve took a bite of the forbidden apple, evil has existed in the world, however it is of paramount importance to realize who the real culprits of these evils are; guns are not to blame. Just as spoons do not make people fat and pencils do not do math problems wrong, guns do not kill people. People kill people. According to Steve Nolan, Co-Founder of SurvivalWeek.com and publisher of The Beacon, American gun owners use their guns almost 2.5 million times per year to ward off criminal attacks. Often times, a gun does not even have to be fired to scare away an attacker. In the event of a robbery, most criminals will flee simply at the threat of being shot. We continually hear about the evil that guns cause and the detriment to society that gun owners are, however, the media fails to mention the tremendous amount of lives saved by guns being used defensively. When 2.5 million lives are saved annually as opposed to the 11,000 lost annually due to gun related homicides, it is clear that
Gun control is one of the most talked about topics in modern day America. 43 of 50 states have the right to bear arms. Most states have to background check you in order for you to purchase or sell guns. Some other states prevent carrying guns and some other ban assault rifle weapons. People who support the gun laws say that the second amendment was meant for militias and that gun restrictions have always existed. People who oppose that say that guns are needed for self-defense from people who invade houses or are actual threats. Although both of those are correct, there will always be two sides for control laws.
“It is estimated that there are 310 million non – military guns in America” (O’Brien and Stanton). Many people that own a firearm usually have more than one gun. Also, a majority of gun owners feel that owning a firearm is the best way to protect themselves at home. With the large number of guns said to be in America, there needs to be a way to prevent the number of frequently occurring mass shootings. The solution to this issue is called gun control. Gun control needs to be implied more in our society because gun related crimes are mostly committed by those diagnosed with mental illnesses, there is no contradiction with the second amendment, it has the ability to lower the amount of mass shootings in the United States, and universal
The Second Amendment protects an individual's right to own guns ; that guns are needed for self-defense from threats ranging from local criminals to foreign invaders; and that gun ownership deters crime rather that causes more crime. The issue with gun control laws is that people want to add more laws related to gun control because of the recent events happening in schools and public buildings. While many people are for gun control laws, based on information, we should not enact more gun laws because they need to be utilized for self defense and are required for hunting and sports.
In society today, there is a major problem with gun control. Over the years it has been a sequence of events that has occurred involving individuals taking their issues out on innocent people. When these firearms get into the wrong hands especially, people with social problems that is when catastrophe arises. These social problems can include, divorce, separation, mental, and physical abuse, and mental illnesses. Overall, these individuals with the social problem do not know how to handle their issues and problems without violence, and criminal acts upon others.
Opponents of gun control cite the Second Amendment as the most compelling defense for their argument. Those who oppose strict gun regulation fear that gun control will infringe upon, “law-abiding citizens' Second Amendment right to bear arms” (DiLascio). This is simply untrue. Article I, Section 8, Clauses 15 and 16 of the Second Amendment state that the Constitution gives Congress the ability to assemble a militia when national security is threatened and allows citizens to own firearms in order to protect themselves from government oppression (Bowman and Newton). What one garners from this information is that the Second Amendment was enacted in a purely military context. As Bowman states, “It is important to note that while the Second Amendment
According to the NRA, the Second Amendment of the Constitution guarantees individuals the right to own and carry guns. As stated by the supreme court, in District of Columbia v. Heller, the Second Amendment protects "the individual right to posses and carry weapons in case of confrontation” (NRA-ILA). Lastly, the NRA believes if everyone was capable of owning guns, they would be safer from criminals and bring the crime rate down. These are all understandable reasons for why people wish for guns to be made available to everyone, but there are other reasons that demonstrate the need for regulation.
Gun violence is a serious issue that has troubled cities across America. As a student, I go to my classes under the impression that educational institute that I am attending can keep me and other students safe. In 2017 it is almost impossible to go somewhere and feel safe. With recent events like the shooting at Ohio State University and UCLA, the idea of being safe on campus is no longer a reality for students like me. Many college campuses have implemented a concealed-carry policy to ensure the safety of faculty and students. In the article, Students Oppose Concealed Weapons on Campuses, writer Justin Doubleday states that, so far, this year 19 states have introduced legislation to allow concealed carry on public-college campuses (DoubleDay). Even though students would feel a lot safer with carrying a firearm, college students should not be allowed to carry firearms on campus. because It would increase more violence on campus.
