Hi Micquaya. When I think of mental health itself, I do not automatically think of people that are suffering from a psychological issue. Mental health to me is just your psychological status. Mental illness causes me to think a psychological issue. The two are not the same in my eyes. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Physical health is just the status but if I were to say a physical disability it is completely different. The ways to promote good mental health are numerous. Taking care of your body is definitely a good way. Many times our mental status is directly related to our physical health. I know for me, it is hard to think clear when I do not get enough sleep.
Mental and physical health should not be separated, as poor physical health can lead to an increased risk of poor mental health. Furthermore, mental and physical health means that individuals are able to realise their own abilities to cope with normal stresses by making a contribution to society, where they are physically and mentally well (Mental Health Foundation, 2017).
According to Merriam-Webster, mental health illness is described as a broad range of medical conditions (such as major depression, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, or panic disorder) that are marked primarily by sufficient disorganization of personality, mind, or emotions to impair normal psychological functioning and cause noticeable grief or disability and that are usually related with a disruption in standard judgement, feeling, mood, behavior, interpersonal interactions, or daily functioning. Mental health is described as a level of psychological comfort, or the absence of a mental illness. It is the "psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment from the perspective of positive psychology or holism, mental health may include an person 's capability to enjoy life, and produce stability connecting life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. The World Health Organization, suggests mental health illness includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, inter-generational dependence, and self-actualization of one 's intellectual and emotional potential, among others. The WHO further states that the well-being of an individual is encompassed in the recognition of their capabilities, managing with normal stresses of life, constructive work and involvement to their community. Ethnic differences, prejudiced evaluations, and competing professional
Hi Teagen! I agree with the idea that the expansion of suffrage to non-propertied white males in the 1820s and 1830s was an advancement in American political life. I found in the book that through the westward expansion, most of the new states in America allowed all white males to vote at the age of 21 (Faragher, 258). Also before 1800 only white males that owned property or were taxpayers could vote in most of the original thirteen states (Faragher, 257). This was important because it led to the presidential electors and governors to be elected by a direct vote of men from all classes, rather than by small groups of state legislators (Faragher, 258). I agree that this lead to delaying suffrage of white women and African Americans. This contradicts
I am currently a 3rd year nursing student at Ryerson University and have recently become extremely interested in physiotherapy. This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to work with the University Health Network as a Patient Observer, where I was able to discuss with many physiotherapists about the nature of their jobs. Every physiotherapist spoke with the utmost positivity when discussing their position even after numerous years of practice. This inspired me to pursue my goal of becoming a physiotherapist in the future as it is something I am very passionate about.
Hi Margairia, your story is like so many others that was affected by cancer. Some of us are not educated on it until it affects someone near to use. Cancer is a horrible disease that will affect us all one way or another. My uncle that passed this week, his cancer started off in the bone. Then we were told it had spread to his mouth where it also began to have tumors in as well. The number of things that cancer does to one’s mind and body is indescribable. This pushes me more to maintain a healthy lifestyle so that my children can continue to carry it out.
In any game one team will win and other team will loose. It’s a universal truth. Game supposed to play for leisure, interest and entertainment. In any competition every one wants to win, that does not mean you have to choose the violent way. Coaches need to be strict in order to keep rules and regulation, but does not mean he can bully players.
In fact, there still are many attitudes within most societies that view symptoms of mental disorders as threatening which frequently cause stigma towards people with mental health problems. Many stereotypes lead people to believe that people with mental health issues are violent, crazy & unpredictable. Those with mental illnesses are usually inaccurately accused of being downright lazy & weak, however, studies have worked to prove this myth untrue. According to Healthy People.gov, mental health is a state of successful mental functioning, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity. Many would agree that mental health is vital to a productive, healthy
You make a great point with the correlation of the lack of necessity for a warrant and invading our privacy. Perhaps it would be more appropriate for an all inclusive warrant, such as one initial warrant given for probably cause of a terroristic threat. Would you still feel our privacy would be assaulted with this process? It could justify utilizing unrelated evidence unrelated to terrorism.
One of the main arguments for mental and physical wellbeing receiving the same funding and attention is that mental health can impact physical health drastically (and vice versa). There are various ways in which bad mental health has been shown to be harmful to physical health, mental issues account for 23% of burdening diseases in the UK, these issues also have a dramatic effect on life expectancy. Mental illnesses such as depression and schizophrenia have been linked to heart disease and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, approximately 24 million people suffer from schizophrenia and over 350 million people have depression worldwide. People suffering from serious mental health issues also often experience high blood pressure and high levels of stress hormones therefore an
Your response is very precise, especially about levels of prevention. When it comes to health policy that is related to health promotion, I couldn’t agree more. Because with affordable act as it mention in title IV “ the act will promote prevention, wellness, and public health” for what I understand, this means people will be inform preventative care such as routine check up to be able to detect any disease in early stage. In a long run, I believe this will also be cost effective, if pt. patient will be seen routinely and disease is diagnosis, the care will be provided and the effectiveness of treatment is higher chance of being successful. For example, diabetic patient that was seen routinely, she/he was informed ahead able the
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines it as, “Mental illnesses refer to disorders generally characterized by dysregulation (sic) of mood, thought, and/or behavior…” (CDC, 2016). There are also a lot of factors that can lead to mental illness, such as genetic inheritance, physical or emotional trauma, and drugs and alcohol. Because there are so many variables that can lead up to mental illness, it is hard to agree on what ailments are serious concerns. However, knowing that many people are at risk due to the variety of causes and symptoms should make our health care system make mental health a
I like that have narrow down your research and kept it on particular topic without add too much to it. There are a lot of different component that could affect Community Colleges that focus on their students having higher retention rate than other institutions that are not supportive in student success programs, but you are researching just colleges not students. I admire that you are focus on your hypothesis. Looking forward to reading more.
Hi Merysa! I also grew up in a very religious family. My father is retired from the army and now is a minister, and my grandfather and great grandfather were also ministers. I was taught many of the same ideologies that you discussed in your post. It was not until I was older that I began to challenge their beliefs and question their validity. Now that I am a mother myself, I try to teach my daughter pretty much the exact opposite of what I was taught. I try to teach my son and daughter that both girls and boys are responsible for themselves and that women should never be held responsible for the negative actions of men.
Mental health is as important as physical health. Mental health is a state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people and the ability to adapt to change to cope with adversity.
Mental illnesses are health conditions involving changes in thinking, emotion or behavior or a combination of all three (What is Mental Illness).
