I know that you were never one concerned by history, because you felt it was not relevant to you, that it was boring and maybe it was even inaccurate. However, in my studies I have found quite the opposite. History is more than dates or names, history is us. It is why and how, it is the thoughts and motivations of people long gone but whose struggles are able to resonate within us.
There is no single history, no matter what text you read, what you remember you will never have a comprehensive account of what happened. As a society of individuals we have our own thoughts, motivations and experiences which make different people. So the purpose of history is not about what happened, but what can be proven. Integrity, honesty and sharing credit are integral to the field. Evidence, whether primary or secondary sources, must come from that which prove to be legitimate. (AHA ¶4,6,8) One cannot say, for example, that the ancient Egyptians worshipped cats based upon drawings found on a vase which has no known origins. Yet a historian can theorize this and, with the help of others possibly, find old paintings or writings which would support such a theory. History is happening all around us, whether it is affecting us positively or negatively. History is an occurrence of events that have made an impact so big that we emphasize them today. From the Sumerians, to the latest recorded history, we are creating history within. History is happening every day, but it is up to us the retreat back the occurrences of the past life. It is because of history that we function the way we do. For example, through the 15th century, occurrences happened, for example the diversity of people seen throughout the new world. You’ll see that conflict and tension led to experiences with self-government and that the questioning of authority of the church led to diverse religions. Its very important to know a type of history to have a sense of independent thinking and to understand cultural heritage. Learning about history brings discussions about debatable issues, and having a better understanding of the challenges the nation could be facing. Without historical leaders, leadership skills wouldn't be as strong as they are today, learning apart of history inspires local and global leaders, giving role models for the type of leaders that deal with difficult challenges in their community, nation and even the globe world.
